OVER the summer, there’s been so much talk about who San Beda’s lost. After the 2009 Nike Summer League, there’ll be a lot of buzz as to what it’s won.

San Beda College won its first Nike plum with a convincing 85-69 triumph over San Sebastian College-Recoletos at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City last June 13. In the second period, JR Tecson and Jake Pascual led the Mendiola squad in its assault to grab the driver’s seat, one that ended with San Beda gaining the upper hand, 49-41, at the half.

In the third period, the NCAA champions erected their biggest lead of 12, 53-41, at the 9:34 mark thanks to Pascual. It was halfway through the same quarter when the Stags ignited a run that saw them trail by just two at the end of the canto, thanks to a buzzer-beater triple by Jonathan Semira.

However, San Sebastian, which was missing the services of coach Ato Agustin and stalwarts Ian Sangalang and Dexter Maiquez, wasn’t able to sustain the momentum and haplessly watched the Red Lions penetrate the lane at will. Bam Gamalinda led the Mendiola unit with 16 points, while Jimbo Aquino countered for the Stags with 18.

The Red Lions won P200,000 in cash and a P30,000 gift certificate from GNC.

In the battle for third, Far Eastern University escaped with a squeaker of a win over Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 70-69.

  • still the king of the ncaa jungle! 4peat is possible SSCR is the biggest threat to the crown. JRU is all hype. FYI no menor, borgie, pong and ekwe in that game. wala pa rin the secret weapon(s). more fire power to come in season 85. no final line up yet.

  • Chiritomtom Chuwaiwap says:

What? Where was JRU again? Huh. As expected, losers still in the end.
    Take that fags.

  • x says:

  • Decopro says:

same score lang nito nung finals last season against jru! 85-69 haha!

    GO SAN BEDA FIGHT!

  • B.I.G says:

It was a rough and tumble game but in the end San Beda hung tough for the pull-away 85 – 69 victory to claim the 2009 Nike Summer League championship over San Sebastian.

In a game that saw a couple of warnings, technical fouls and unsportsmanlike fouls whistled as early as the second period, the Red Lions showed true grit and would not be drawn into a fracas.

Veteran guards Ray Maconocido and Pamboy Raymundo were the prime culprits as they snuck in cheap shots of all manner against San Beda newcomer Jessmar Villahermosa. Maconocido snapped a couple of rabbit punches into Villahermosa’s midsection, even as Raymundo deliberately tripped him in an ensuing play. Villahermosa however kept his cool and even baited the two Stags to keep up with the cheap shots even in front of the referees. Both were slapped with technical fouls and later on unsportsmanlike fouls and simply never got into the game.

In the third period, when San Beda was pulling away at 53-41, Gilbert Bulawan tried the same roughhouse tactics against American import Sudan Daniels. Taunting Daniels after he made a basket, Bulawan was warned by referee Boyong Manalac. Daniels later on scored got his own licks in as he nailed Bulawan when he secured a defensive board for the Red Lions. Bulawan had to be pulled out after he crumpled to the floor under the east basket.

Had the Stags just stuck to their usual play, they might have made this a little more interesting. Apparently they tried to foolishly make up for the absence of 6’6″ top recruit Ian Sangalang and head coach Ato Agustin with dirty play, a ploy that obviously backfired. Sangalang and Agustin are reportedly in sick bay.

By the last three minutes, head coach Frankie Lim’s boys had started to pull away from 71-63, as JR Tecson, Daniels, Garvo Lanete and Bam Gamalinda went in for the kill baskets.

“This gives us good momentum going into the NCAA,” said Lim after the game. “I’m proud of the boys for doing a good job and maintaining their composure,” he added.

Daniels was named MVP of the tournament. “This is just so special not just for me but for the team. Hopefully we can bring this all the way to the NCAA,” he said.

D din eto ang Final Line Up ng Stags para sa NCAA just so you know. Baka mamaya magulat kayo. ;) Teaser palang yan.

  • atenista_girl says:

so, uh, where’s dela swine university? i thought they were the reigning champions.. sad they never made themselves felt. i guess that is to be expected even at the uaap. poor, poor weaklings. better use your usual antics to win baskets with the refs or you won’t even come close to a F4 appearance.

  • erecto says:

    @tsk tsk

  • beast says:

i have a bad feeling also there would be trouble in the ncaa this season. more security needed sa mga venues if possible

  • erecto says:

    @tsk tsk

  • fjrudk says:

pag loosers talaga daming excuse! same as JRU malakas at first tapos biglang lag lag sa liga. hirap nilang tanggapin fate nila but it’s ok, expected naman yan sa kanila. ANG TALO, TALO! simple as that. thugs/goons kase mga players. gulo ito sa ncaa

  • mighty_lion says:

Grabe ang dumi maglaro ng Baste. Raymundo, Manoncido & Bulawan. I dont know what fullfilment they get out of it.

    Tsk.. tsk.. tsk..

    Get up guys. Play basketball.

  • mighty_kid says:

  • shaolin says:

some people are afraid to loose. too much publicity and hype to some schools, but when they started loosing, a tough pill for them to swallow. too much expectation can hurt guys. I suggest to remain humble always. look what happened to sscr and jru. cheap shots to the winning school is expected. its their defense mechanism

  • oiltoquit says:

    mabuhay rizal!!!!!

  • we are the champions!!!! inggit kayo

  • philips says:

    @SSCR:
aba’y walang pinagkaiba pala sa lasalle.

  • PROUD TO BE SEBASTINIAN says:

    Congratulations San Beda
    God bless San Sebastian

See you in the Ncaa this June 27.

    Bravo SSC. Bravo!

  • enterEmail says:

schools to watch out for this ncaa season for dirty tactics and rough plays :

SSCR – current roster of the stags are thugs and goons,
rookies are known in pampanga to be notorious
coaching staff have no control of its players.

EAC – Perfect match-up for the stags, known for it’s
    gangster type of basket brawl.

  • The observer says:

    ^^^
101% true indeed. more security personnel will be needed if this two teams will play on the same playing date. specially if they are going up against each other. Let me add JRU also to the list.

  • The quality of basketball game and players in the NCAA is far out cry from it’s rival league. CSJL/MIT/SBC should be considering transfering or forming it’s own league w/ new member schools. most ncaa school is not competitive anymore, the brand of basketball or basketbrawl is alarming. SSCR should be put on the watch list.

  • PEX101 says:

with the additon of EAC and AU to the ncaa, all hell will broke loose. Anarchy in the ncaa. specially they will be joining SSCR and JRU in one league, I just hope security will be tight. student hoolganism is at it’s high. it’s not basketball anymore, it’s a royal rumble.

  • genocide says:

some people here are weird, their posts tell their personality and disgraces themselves, their family and their almater. cheap shot here is abundance. sensless i may add.

  • me says:

    The Observer

Tama kayo nina enterMail at Word Press Inc. As for security confident ako pag Araneta ang venue.

  • Arriba!

  • Bedan dad says:

Saka pare-parehas tayong Pilipino, wag sana tayo tayo pa nagsisiraan.

di naman totoo yan, if you would read it carefully,
there are flaws to how the letter is written.

And “Art Bell” a known radio talk show host will definitely not discredit his own name.
