Green Archers knock off San Beda, arrange title game with Ateneo

DE LA SALLE University surely wanted another crack at its archrivals from Katipunan.

In what proved to be another nail-biting Final Four matchup in the Philippine Collegiate Championships, the Green Archers booked a title showdown and yet another date with Ateneo de Manila thanks to a 62-61 squeaker against San Beda College at the Arena in San Juan last December 6, 2008.

With the Red Lions on top by one, wily DLSU guard JV Casio came up with the biggest play of the tournament, converting on a breakaway lay-up off a Peejay Barua steal with 6.6 seconds left in the game. San Beda had a chance to steal the game, but Ogie Menor muffed a drive from the top of the key as time expired.

It wasn’t an ending that anyone foresaw given the tenor of the first three quarters. The reigning NCAA champions controlled the game from the beginning and stifled the Taft offense thanks to an 11-0 outburst in the first quarter. In fact, Barua managed to put his squad on the scoreboard with just 1:33 left in the opening quarter.

La Salle forward Rico Maierhofer, who led the Green and White with 17 points and 11 rebounds, tried to rally his teammates in the second quarter thanks to his uncanny ability to find seams in the defense and bait defenders into committing fouls. However, this proved futile as San Beda erected a 14-point lead thanks to a 9-0 run with three minutes left in the second quarter to extend its lead, 35-23 after 20 minutes of action.

The second half, though, was a different story altogether. De La Salle threw a wrench at the Red Lions’ defense as it launched a 13-4 attack in a three-minute span that cut a game-high 15-point lead to just six, 47-41. The blowout-in-the-making turned into a tight contest as the lead changed hands six times – all in the fourth quarter. In fact, Mike Abasolo, a San Beda alumnus and co-founder of inboundpass.com, exuded a prophet’s words amidst DLSU’s furious run. “I won’t believe we’ve won until the final buzzer goes off.”

The first lead change, with 3:53 left in the game, came off a fastbreak that Barua converted on, bringing the green shirts in the audience to their feet as La Salle seized the edge for the first time in the game, 56-55. The Archers’ diminutive squad of five cheerleaders and three drums seemed to come alive, out-yelling and out-beating the imposing Red Lion gallery.

In the final two minutes, the advantage swung from Taft to Mendiola. San Beda’s last taste of the lead, and a potential championship, came courtesy of their top-scorer Jake Pascual with 2:20 left, 61-60, before Casio drove the dagger into the hearts of the three-time, defending NCAA champions.

De La Salle coach Franz Pumaren, after the game, commented unsmilingly, “Lucky. We were very lucky to win this. We didn’t have a chance to practice much. Only once, yesterday, due to our involvement in the PBL.” One of his deputies, Tonichi Yturri, added, “I’d like to think that we have a 50-50 chance against Ateneo, especially based on their performance against Letran earlier. It just goes to show that anything can happen, whether to the UAAP champions or the NCAA champions. We were aggressive. We fought with intensity. We did our best and we have to like our chances no matter what, and make up for the last time we met them in the UAAP final.”

The stage is now set. The Ateneo Blue Eagles will be facing the De La Salle Green Archers for the championship at 4 p.m. on Monday, December 8, at the Araneta Coliseum. The battle for third will be between the Letran Knights and the San Beda Red Lions at 2 p.m.

The scores:

De La Salle 62 – Maierhofer 17, Casio 11, Barua 11, Bagatsing 7, Walsham 6, Malabes 5, Mangahas 2, Ferdinand 2, Villanueva 0, Webb 0, Mendoza 0.

San Beda 61 – Pascual 15, Ekwe 12, Menor 8, Tecson 7, Tirona 5, Taganas 4, Lanete 4, Gamalinda 4, Villanueva, 2, Marcelo 0.

Quarter scores: 8-16; 23-35; 43-49; 62-61

    @mhacky 15

    you’re forcing the issue, hindi mo namn kailang ireiterate lahat ng facts, kulang na lang ihampas mo sa muka ng mga NCAA yun gusto mo iparating, We all love Basketball, you can’t discount the competition among leagues but there is always limit to it.

    “It’s all FUN and GAMES for UAAP players,but it’s all BUSINESS for NCAA players eager to prove they are equal with their UAAP counterparts”- I did laugh in this statement, maybe for some people Basketball is Just “FUN & GAMES”, only a form of entertainment, But for the Players coaches and Staffs, as well to those hardcore Fans, BASKETBALL. is not “FUN & GAME”, its about Pride, the love of sports, and camaraderie, A lot of People Give most of their lives just to compete and protect the interest of this sports, and this journalist just playing mockery and say it is all FUN & GAMES for UAAP Players, just ask all players, coaches on different leagues if BASKETBALL is ALL FUN & GAMES.

    just an opinion.peace.

    natawa rin ako nung nabasa ko, kasi all-star game na nga lang, bakit pa kailangan seryosohin ng mga NCAA, dapat mag-relax lang sila and enjoy the festivities, pati nga mga referees, indi na strict sa mga calls eh..

    sori kung medyo na-offend kita at ibang NCAA fans, gaya nga ng sabe nung isa dito sa forum, we have “bragging rights” and in my case, i want to use it laban sa mga taong patuloy na ipinagyayabang sa amin yung physicality ng NCAA…

    i guess kung titigilan na ng iba yung pagmamayabang nila, di na rin ako mag-post pa ng ganito…

    @nicksy,

    Just my thoughts, but come to think of it, mhacky15’s comments need not even be dignified with a response. He tried to “impress” us with his so-called facts, but he never acknowledged the other facts:

    - that the PCC Final4 game between Ateneo(UAAP champs) and the rebuilding Letran Knights(NCAA final 5 qualifier) was a 1-point victory for the Eagles and as posted earlier, could have gone either way.

    - that San Beda lost to an intact La Salle also by only 1-pt. He did not mention the fact that DLSU faced the Lions who were without their starting backcourt of Hermida (ACL injury) and Escobal (left the team to turn pro after winning their 3peat). Ironically, it was former NCAA juniors mythical 5 and red cub JV Casio who won the game for Green Archers.

    - Idagdag ko lang, alam kaya ni Mhacky15 that a lot of the former and current UAAP stars ay galing ng Letran, Mapua, JRU, Baste, at SanBeda and were once batang NC’, who then got recruited or transferred to admittedly bigger and (hopefully) better academic institutions in the uaap.

    Datihang Bedista din ako, and I was glad to hear Casio thank the LaSalle AND the SAN BEDA community after winning the game and the MVP award. At least si Casio, marunong tumanaw ng kanyang pinanggalingan.

    CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DE LA SALLE GREEN ARCHERS!
    MAKE US PROUD IN THE UPCOMING WORLD UNIV. BBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN SERBIA.

    Pax to Mhacky15 and to all! :-)

    -Bragging rights
    yes you have the Bragging rights, but as i said before, the way you reiterate your case or your right/s, is seems that you not just bragging it, you shoving-it-down the throat of your counter parts, just take a advice in driving class when the instructor insist that you should not force your right (“wag ipilit ang karapatan”)

    “i want to use it laban sa mga taong patuloy na ipinagyayabang sa amin yung physicality ng NCAA”

    as you said gusto mong gamitin yun karapatan mo laban sa mga taong ito, hindi ba parang ikaw ata ngsisimula ng away? sayo na nanggaling ang mga salita, don’t let then in your nerves, it just makes you the culprit

    -about the Physicality of NCAA
    true yun ang sa palagay ko ang advantage ng NCAA compare sa UAAP, many would agree on that, but remember hindi lang naman physicality ang basketball, maraming aspect yan, alam naman natin iba talaga style ng play ng UAAP at NCAA.

    i guess kung titigilan na ng iba yung pagmamayabang nila, di na rin ako mag-post pa ng ganito…
    simple lang yan eh, kung naiinis ka dun sa mga ganung tao, edi wag ka gumaya,

    @MHACKY15

    nice arguments man..

    @director

    icould easily answer your 3 points…

    Point no.1
    a. obviously wala si chris tiu
    b. hindi masyado 100% si buenafe kasi may sakit siya, kaya nga wala siya kanina eh
    c.wala rin sila yuri escueta(injured, kaya di siya 100% dun sa ADMU-DLSU)
    d. wala rin si job nkemakolam
    e.hindi NAKAPAG-PRACTICE yung buong team kasi galing yung kalahati ng team sa Jesuit invitational

    Point no.2
    a. wala rin sila LA revilla, simon atkins at yung isa pang player na nakalimutan ko pangalan
    b.hindi pa 100% si mangahas dahil dun sa injury nya nung 2nd quarter
    c.Hindi nakapag-practice ang DLSU dahil nasa minalas na yung schedule ng mga players nila ay may game sa PBL..
    d. San Beda is the NCAA champs, their supposed to be better DLSU if being NCAA champ is really equal with being UAAP champ

    Point no.3
    a. lalo mo lang diniin sarili mo, oo nga maaring dahil sa mga players na yun kaya kame ang da best league in the country, pero whatever the reason, what’s imortant is UAAP is the no.1 league
