DE LA SALLE University surely wanted another crack at its archrivals from Katipunan.

In what proved to be another nail-biting Final Four matchup in the Philippine Collegiate Championships, the Green Archers booked a title showdown and yet another date with Ateneo de Manila thanks to a 62-61 squeaker against San Beda College at the Arena in San Juan last December 6, 2008.

With the Red Lions on top by one, wily DLSU guard JV Casio came up with the biggest play of the tournament, converting on a breakaway lay-up off a Peejay Barua steal with 6.6 seconds left in the game. San Beda had a chance to steal the game, but Ogie Menor muffed a drive from the top of the key as time expired.

It wasn’t an ending that anyone foresaw given the tenor of the first three quarters. The reigning NCAA champions controlled the game from the beginning and stifled the Taft offense thanks to an 11-0 outburst in the first quarter. In fact, Barua managed to put his squad on the scoreboard with just 1:33 left in the opening quarter.

La Salle forward Rico Maierhofer, who led the Green and White with 17 points and 11 rebounds, tried to rally his teammates in the second quarter thanks to his uncanny ability to find seams in the defense and bait defenders into committing fouls. However, this proved futile as San Beda erected a 14-point lead thanks to a 9-0 run with three minutes left in the second quarter to extend its lead, 35-23 after 20 minutes of action.

The second half, though, was a different story altogether. De La Salle threw a wrench at the Red Lions’ defense as it launched a 13-4 attack in a three-minute span that cut a game-high 15-point lead to just six, 47-41. The blowout-in-the-making turned into a tight contest as the lead changed hands six times – all in the fourth quarter. In fact, Mike Abasolo, a San Beda alumnus and co-founder of inboundpass.com, exuded a prophet’s words amidst DLSU’s furious run. “I won’t believe we’ve won until the final buzzer goes off.”

The first lead change, with 3:53 left in the game, came off a fastbreak that Barua converted on, bringing the green shirts in the audience to their feet as La Salle seized the edge for the first time in the game, 56-55. The Archers’ diminutive squad of five cheerleaders and three drums seemed to come alive, out-yelling and out-beating the imposing Red Lion gallery.

In the final two minutes, the advantage swung from Taft to Mendiola. San Beda’s last taste of the lead, and a potential championship, came courtesy of their top-scorer Jake Pascual with 2:20 left, 61-60, before Casio drove the dagger into the hearts of the three-time, defending NCAA champions.

De La Salle coach Franz Pumaren, after the game, commented unsmilingly, “Lucky. We were very lucky to win this. We didn’t have a chance to practice much. Only once, yesterday, due to our involvement in the PBL.” One of his deputies, Tonichi Yturri, added, “I’d like to think that we have a 50-50 chance against Ateneo, especially based on their performance against Letran earlier. It just goes to show that anything can happen, whether to the UAAP champions or the NCAA champions. We were aggressive. We fought with intensity. We did our best and we have to like our chances no matter what, and make up for the last time we met them in the UAAP final.”

The stage is now set. The Ateneo Blue Eagles will be facing the De La Salle Green Archers for the championship at 4 p.m. on Monday, December 8, at the Araneta Coliseum. The battle for third will be between the Letran Knights and the San Beda Red Lions at 2 p.m.

The scores:

De La Salle 62 – Maierhofer 17, Casio 11, Barua 11, Bagatsing 7, Walsham 6, Malabes 5, Mangahas 2, Ferdinand 2, Villanueva 0, Webb 0, Mendoza 0.

San Beda 61 – Pascual 15, Ekwe 12, Menor 8, Tecson 7, Tirona 5, Taganas 4, Lanete 4, Gamalinda 4, Villanueva, 2, Marcelo 0.

Quarter scores: 8-16; 23-35; 43-49; 62-61

  • kobenatics says:

    ARRIBA LETRAN
    ANIMO SAN BEDA
    PROUD TO BE BATANG NCAA
    PANA PANAHON LANG YAN, THEY MAY CONSIDER NCAA AS A SMALL POND COMPARE TO UAAP(BUT I DONT DEFINITELY THINK SO). UULITIN KO, NGAYONG NATALO TAYO NG MGA UAAP TEAMS WE WILL BE HUNGRIER AND MUCH MORE HUNGRIER NEXT TIME, OUR TIME OR TIMES WILL COME…

    BRAVO BASTE

  • kox says:

    ok lang, quality games naman both yung final four matchups, i would have love to see an ateneo vs san beda sa finals, sana next year ganito din ang success ng pcc and sana mas malaki ang maging following nito…

  • Jhocson Univ. Bloodhounds says:

    The San Beda Red Lions can play without Sam Ekwe! But they cant win. Come on. Both teams were depleted. But the hearts of the UAAP RUNNER UPS were just a lot bigger than the NCAA Champs.
    I can see a great future of the Red Lions. I am pretty sure they will reach the finals again, lead by the now King Red Lion Ogie Menor, backed up the very promising Elvin Jake Pascual.
    If Borgie Hermida was in the line up, would the result be different?
    I fimrly believe so. Borgie would have made so many rings around Hyram Bagatsing and Bader Malabes. And win the game.
    I hope after this game, after the departure of Sam Ekwe and Pong Escobal, and now Ogie Menor as the King Red Lion, Menor should be the man he should really be.
    A barreling, fearless, agressive, assertive, and most importantly, wise.
    I mean, that leaning fade away shot. PATHETIC! DAPAT NAG DRIVE AND DISH NA LANG SIYA!

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    I honestly believe, deep inside my heart, mind and guts, that Jvee Casio will end his Green Archer legacy with a win against their rivals, the Ateneo Blue Eagles. I just think its due. Jvee is definitely one of the best players the Pumaren system has molded. He can be compared to Ren Ren Ritualo, Mike Cortez, Mac Cardona, and Joseph Yeo. I see Jvee Casio scoring more than 20 in this coming game. He will win the championship for the team, then be awarded the Tournament MVP.
    And of course, KAGAWAD CHRIS TIU is not playing. Sayang.

  • Grrr! says:

    Another close match. Another game that makes NCAA supporters proud. Like Letran’s loss in the first game, SBC loss to DLSU does not prove anything. Arguably, the top two UAAP teams fghting it out in the Finals shows which league is better. Again as I said, arguably.

    This PCC season has generated the same excitement as the NCAA and UAAP wars.

    I suggest that an NCAA-UAAP cross-over be considered in the coming season. NCAA and UAAP teams will play each other once with the results affecting their win-loss column. The crossover games will have a bearing in the final standings of the NCAA and the UAAP leagues. That way, hindi exhibiton ang games but all are important. The games should start early, like June instead of end July or August. Box office potential of this format is mind boggling.

    The battle between ADMU and DLSU, and CSJL and SBC on Monday will only serve to intensify the rivalries. For these teams, the crown and placing in the standings are merely incidental. Winning over the other is. It is a matter of School Pride and Tradition. This is what makes these games not only exciting but intersting and with historical implications.

    One Big Fight!
    Arriba!
    Animo (red)!
    Animo (green)!

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    @ Grrr!,

    Its just sad, and ugly to think and witness that the

    best of the NCAA is battling for 3rd while the game

    between the UAAP’s very best is for it all.

    But really, the games played yesterday was just so

    GREAT and shame should not develop.

  • sick bastard says:

    @de ocampo cobra

    sakaling manalo ang DLSU (dahil wala si Chris), they won’t gain much pride pa rin naman kahit sabihin nating PCC ito. Did anyone really care when Ateneo got the PCC gold last year?

    WALA…

    ang pride nasa UAAP pa rin.

  • sick bastard says:

    @ justice and kobenatics

    please just speaking straight tagalog. Your “NCAA”ness appears at large

  • Jhocson Univ. Bloodhounds says:

    Oh no, Sam Ekwe is really gone.

    Wait, meron pa palang battle for third.

    He he he.

    Hoy mga bedans! Hilain nyo si Pong Escobal at pilitin

    niyo maglaro. Sam Ekwe and Pong Escobal, for the last

    time against your rivals, the Letran Knights, handing

    the Kingship to Ogie Menor with a win.

  • sick bastard says:

    oh, by the way, to those who cannot get my message, I am mocking their language. “just speaking tagalog”. I meant to do that, in short. baka kasi may tumira pa sa akin eh.

  • nicksy says:

    wow, classier… no comment,

  • nicksy says:

    @De Ocampo Cobra

    what i like the most about JV is the humbleness, as well he never forget where he came from, and still supports his high school alma matter.

  • nicksy says:

    San Beda will have a hard time winning against Letran, due to the injuries incurred to all Point Guards, if Tirona and Villanueva is going to play tomorrow , they are not in perfect condition, and the Red Lions hard time passing the half court against the Dreaded Pressure of Letran, so Letran will have a Great Advantage on the Game, but we’ll see what frankie lim would do.

  • UAAP says:

    UAAP won 4 out of 5 matches against NCAA…and being 2nd place in the UAAP is better than being champion in the NCAA..

  • nicksy says:

    @UAAP
    i won’t argue with that, if you like that way, then internalize it by yourself. baka kainin ka lang ng hangin mo.

  • redone says:

    na bullseye ng archers ang lion…

    classier…. nice one… sayang hindi la salle -letran and beda – ateneo ang naglaban nung semis… diba may mga rivalries tong schools na to….

    i prefer to be a champion than just mere 2nd placer….

  • UAAP says:

    @nicksy

  • roar. says:

    actually the winner on monday’s game between La Salle and Ateneo will have the bragging rights to represent the country in the Universiade in serbia. :D so its not true that there’s not much here in the PCCL. Its School Pride and our Country’s Pride.

  • beda_iyak says:

    @nicksy

    ahaha.. kawawa ka naman, nagtyatyaga sa gma7… hay… nakakahabag naman ng damdamin…

  • 98 says:

    @UAAP

    kahit masakit man aminin,based on the results,naniniwala na ako sayo na kapag 2nd place ka sa UAAP,ibig sabihin nun,ikaw ang pangalawang pinakamagaling sa buong Pilipinas at mas mataas pa ang posisyon mo sa college basketball kesa sa champion ng NCAA…

  • nicksy says:

    @beda_iyak

    kahit may pera, hindi na aku gagastos sa panunuod lang ng boxing, pag basketball pa yan, sure yan, hindi namn aku fanatic ng boxing eh, nagmamasid lang paminsan. eh ikaw pinagastusan mo ata yun panunuod mo ng laban eh, siguro nagpapyesta ka pa nung nanalo, ganun tlg yun mga sobrang yaman,

    kaya tulog ka na kasi nonsense kasi pinag ssabi mo, gud night. peace.

    tama ka, in the end, nation’s pride yan, kahit sino dyan manalo, susuportahan ko, para sa pilipinas.

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    I think this is going to be the 7th Ateneo La Salle

    game this year. I think La Salle beat Ateneo in the

    Fil Oil then Ateneo eliminated La Salle in the semi

    finals of the Nike Summer League. Then of course the

    next 4 were the UAAP games where the champs blue

    eagles won them all. Finally, this game.

    So its 5-1 Ateneo.

    bragging pare, hindi bragging rights. wrong use of words. para kang yung drayber namin kung mag ingles eh.

  • greeny says:

    @ nicksy.

    during the sweet 16, the venue for the championship was still the Arena in San Juan. It only changed when the Final 4 materialized. They probably realized the marketability (and the chance to make the PCCL a more prominent league than it used to be) so they moved it to the Araneta.

  • greeny says:

    @ nicksy

    btw, it’s COLISEUM, not COLESIUM.
