THE NCAA had a field day in the Elite Eight of the Philippine Collegiate Championships.
Two of the league’s most successful programs, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and San Beda College, advanced to the tournament’s Final Four by besting an upstart squad and a traditional UAAP powerhouse, respectively, at the Arena in San Juan last December 3, 2008.
The Knights hammered out a nail-biting 94-93 win against Far Eastern University to arrange a showdown with UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila. Coach Louie Alas’ wards shot the lights out of the Tamaraws, with RJ Jazul, Kojack Melegrito and Rey Guevarra hitting trey after trey in what proved to be the tournament’s closest game.
Alas, who steered Letran to a third-place finish in the recently-concluded NCAA campaign, commended his squad for creating an upset of sorts against the fancied cagers from Morayta. “I thought we had a 75 percent chance of losing this game. But for some reason, we won. My big guys weren’t scoring, but they also prevented FEU’s bigs from scoring. It was their perimeter shooting that gave us a hard time,†he said in Tagalog.
The high-flying Guevarra led all scorers with 20 points, while big man Dino Daa erupted for 17. Melegrito and Jazul each had 15 for the Muralla-based outfit. Andy Barroca and Benedict Fernandez, who played his final game as a Tamaraw, paced FEU with 16 markers each.
In the last Elite Eight showdown, defending NCAA titlists San Beda ended Arellano University’s campaign with an 87-72 triumph. The Red Lions rallied from a six-point, first quarter deficit and never looked back, thanks in large part to Jake Pascual and Bam Gamalinda, who led the Red and White with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
San Beda head coach Frankie Lim said his squad prepared for the game as early as last week and had a gameplan designed to stop Orlando Daroya and Jordan Melano, two Chiefs who’d been waxing hot since the zonals of the PCC. “My assistant coaches scouted them and we prepared a different strategy going in today’s game.â€Â
A visibly-tired Daroya led the back-to-back NCRAA champions with 33 points, while Melano added 15 for the Chiefs, which lacked the offensive punch from their supporting cast.
San Beda and De La Salle University will face each other in the other Final Four showdown this Saturday, December 6.
The scores:

FEU 93 – Fernandez 16, Barroca 16, Baracael 14, Ramos 14, Cawaling 11, Cervantes 10, Adolfo 6, Knuttel 4, Tanuan 2, Sanga 0

^
I just hope Letran vs. La Salle sa Finals!
Arr1ba!!!=D
I’d like to see casio against jazul..
they’re both from toyota in the pbl if I’m not mistaken.
I’d like to see an Ekwe-Al Hussaini match-up! ^^
Ariba Letran!Excellent game vs the Tamaraws,Coach Alas…
Go San Beda Fight!Great strategy and tactics,as usual,Coach Frankie!
Ergo,its Ateneo vs Letran and San Beda vs La Salle for the semis.
May the best teams win and square off in the finals
to the delight of our college basketball supporters and
fans.We hope all Teams will demonstrate the true
spirit of sportsmanship including one Coach who has
continuously been giving all the reasons, in case he
and his team shall be dealt another humiliating defeat,
this time in the hands of the Red Lions or the Victor in the
Ateneo-Letran Match.
Looks like a retro game for the four schools who defined collegiate basketball during the glory days. What a fitting Final 4 to the newly minted PCCL!
I remember the fierce battles fought between La Salle-Letran and Ateneo-San Beda. A lot of us may be old…but old soldiers never die…we simply resurrect.
Enjoy! This is basketball tradition at its best.
Arriba!
masaya to!!! lalo na sa mga *ehem* estudyante nung panahon na naglalaban-laban sa ncaa itong apat na eskwelahan na to…
Red dot,
so pag may foreigner mas superior na? let’s just see if the adrenalin and tough physical game with feu will carryover to saturday. i think it will.
big sister!!!
ANIMO SAN BEDA! GUDLUCK SA INYO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)
arriba letran beat ateneo
ayos!!! good job to both the red lions and the knights. you showed the stuff that NCAA teams are made off. But the real test is about to start because ateneo and la salle are not mere push-overs. they have good, if not, excellent players and are both well coached. looks like many people predicted that this will be the outcome of the PCC Final Four.
Is Daroya for real? I think he is the only player to average more than 20 pts in this tournament. And to do that against a team like san beda, this guy must be really good. Can’t wait to see him suit up for the pros.
Beda-Ateneo just what MVP wanted to see.
Although, Letran Murder Inc. vs. DLSU is also a great match, baka magka-riot nga lang hehe! Pwede pa pala, sa third place. Either, ateneo-beda, letran-la salle, ateneo-la salle, ateneo-letran, letran-san beda..eh puro royalties. Ok to!
i think i was mistaken with the use of the word “push-over” in my previous post because such word is an understatement. La salle has been a fixture in the UAAP in terms of basketball winning multiple titles, and ateneo is the reigning UAAP champion. so i think the proper term would be “formidable opponents.” but san beda and letran have what it takes to go up against these two teams, San beda being THE Three Time NCAA defending champions and Letran also won its fair share of championships and are consistent in their appearance in the NCAA final four.
Best of luck to all four teams and may the best team win.
Animo San Beda!!!
classic PCC. the best semis and finals to date. 4 of the greatest basketball teams WITH winning tradition and the highest level of school spirit. this time, walang ng suntukan, kurutan na lang.
Once again this is an NCAA versus UAAP tournament. Good luck to these teams.
I saw the FEU Letran game yesterday and noticed how comfortable the Knights were in playing physical as they are already familiar with the level of physicality allowed by the refs. FEU on the other hand, were hving a hard time adjusting as Barroca was really bothered by Melegrito’ssticky defense and when he pushed back he got called for an offensive foul about twice. Drawing from this observation, I believe that the style of officiating by the PBL refs will favor both San Beda and Letran in the final four. But that’s by no means any guarantee to win their games.
now this old school collegiate basketball. dapat lang maging ganito ang ending ng PCC, 4 schools with winning tradition and excellent basketball programs ang mag harap sa final 4.
bakbakan na!
All teams are deserving it’s a classic collegiate game revival. Good Luck San Beda… Show them the true color of ANIMO.
haha best match-up sa FEU-CSJL game kahapon ay yung melegrito-barroca match-up. papogian nalang oh!
The last SBC vs. DLSU match was during the Flying V. (Muntik pa magkasuntukan.) SBC won but that was with Pong Escobal setting the plays. In yesterday’s match against Arellano, Borgie Hermida was injured so it is doubtful if even Borgie will be playing in their next game against La Salle. It might be all up to Tirona this time around.
One of the surprises (at least to me) in the CCL for the Red Lions was Bam Gamalinda. Seriously, I didn’t even consider the guy can shoot even if his life depended on it…having averaged very poorly in the regular season. He was more of a “role player”. I almost totally gave up on that guy! But the last two games, he’s been scoring 15+ points? WTF! Well, as they say, bilog ang bola! Even for Bam it seems.
Awesome matchups, crappy venue
awesome matchups crappy venue
@Tagalog na Bisdak
I agree sana man lang cuneta or philsports, much better kung sa araneta… kulang ata kasi sa crowd attendance dahil ang hirap puntahan.
The games on Dec 8 will be at the Araneta.
sana mkalaro si hermida sa game nila against dlsu and sana hindi acl un injury nya…
Go San Beda Fight!!!
@ lion’s paw
@Grrr!!!!
Mag-dilang anghel ka sana!!!! Araneta here we go!
@kilamart13
Maganda yung diskarte mo tungkol sa physicality in NCAA vs UAAP. Bangaan galore. Working class vs Pa-class. Whose cuisine will reign supreme? LUCKY MI SIEMPRE!
hehehehehehe
f i know sabi sakin ng mga beda natatakot daw cla ksi magagaling daw ang chiefs baka daw matalo cla…
haist andjan lang ksi c ekwe ei..
well
congrats poe…. sa mga beda
UAAP vs. NCAA again…
Actually , they are billing this as an NCAA -UAAP fight. In actuality, this is historic NCAA battle, as then ADMC (now ADMU) and then DLSC (now DLSU) were NCAA members. The stronger basaguleros SBC and CSJL gave the sosyal basguleros ADMC and DLSU such a beating, they jumped leagues.
hahaha mga basagulero ba?
In the olden days, basgaulero dahil suntikan after the games, win or lose. No longer true today. The days of the basaguleros are gone. Kurut-kuruteros na lang. Ha ha ha…
ano bang balita about sa venue ng final 4 games at championships? sana naman sa Araneta kasi for sure all out support ang mga community ng apat school na ito.
@nyek
feu collected all those uaap championships because dlsu and admu were in the ncaa during those times. kung nandun yung 2 teams na yun di siguro ganun kadami napalanunan ng feu..
i just saw the game. feu really struggled from letran
these are some highlights I just can’t ignore..
- Baracael was not used effectively against a much shorter team
- Barroca’s competing with the powerpoint and wanted to play solo on the last quarter
- feu concentrated on jazul and daa, they forgot about guevarra
- it’s raining 3s by the knights plus great defensive strategies

Working class vs Pa-class.
– though you may say you’re still right but not everyone thinks like you (hey, I made a rhyme!) please try not to sound stereotype.. hindi lahat ng student sa isang school magkakamukha!
look at Grrr! His statement was nowhere near annoying but it’s true yet funny.. ;p
The stronger basaguleros SBC and CSJL gave the sosyal basguleros ADMC and DLSU such a beating, they jumped leagues.
@animorah
next time, watch the game before posting anything about it coz you’re absolutely contradicting yourself and the newspaper!
We received news that Borgie’s ACL injury is back. Bad news indeed. We have no true point guard now. Chico is a great sub and defender but not a true point guard. And there is no one else in the team who can take over that position aside from Chico. -gameface forum.
great match ups for pccl semis. i just hope that borgie hermida can play despite the news that he needs to rest for a few months becuase of that ACL. good thing other guys can step up to fill the void.
guys, any idea on how old daroya is? parang pba player na ang ichura and physique.
ok din yung feu. baroca and baracael. that guy baroca reminds me of wesley snipes. BLADE!
what happened to jru pala? they’re the ncaa runner up this season right? how come they werent able to advance to the elite 8?
@tagalog na bisdak
when it comes to physicality talaga hindi patatalo ang NCAA. kung mapapanood mo mga laro sa NCAA kahit tumatalsik na players wala pa rin foul na tinatawag, ika nga normal lang kahit me mga tumutumba na. siguro nasa judgment na din ng mga refs yung kung foul ba tlaga. kung iko-compare mo sa NCAA, yung touch fouls sa ncaa flagrant na sa UAAP, haha.
@U.P Law
just so you know..
Letran commarts, psych and IT are that of the first class recognized by diff award giving bodies both local and abroad (ex. catholic massmedia, nice, germany, microsoft academy etc..)
I don’t get it, wot do you have against UV and the visayan community? it’s funny, you think you’re superior just because you’re in the metro?
Yeah right! as if the whole world cares bout the law here in phils!
again.. no student is dumb enough to purposely make his school look pathetic. so clearly, you aren’t from UP.
@Blown,
JRU lost to FEU,
Doroya for what i heard is 24 yrs old.
