THE CHAMPIONS have proven their worth once again.

UAAP titlists Ateneo de Manila University and NCAA three-peat artists San Beda College advanced to the Elite Eight of the Philippine Collegiate Championship after handily thrashing Lyceum of the Philippines and University of San Jose-Recoletos, respectively, last November 24, 2008 at the Arena in San Juan.

The Blue Eagles opened the knockout round of the PCC with a 77-56 rout of former NCRAA champions Lyceum. Despite keeping the game close until the early minutes of the third quarter, the run-and-gun Pirates failed to keep up with the Blue Eagles, who scored 12 straight points in the final three minutes of the penultimate quarter to open up a 49-37 advantage.

UAAP Season 71 Most Valuable Player Rabeh Al-Hussaini took full advantage of the Pirates’ lack of ceiling, registering 19 points and grabbing 18 boards, while Eric Salamat more than made up for the absence of Chris Tiu with 16 markers.

Lyceum, which has openly stated its intent to join the NCAA next season, trailed only by a single point after the opening ten minutes, and managed to tie the game at 37 midway through the third quarter thanks to the solid play of guards Joseph Abaya, Allen Difuntorum and Leopoldo Santiago.

Al-Hussaini, Salamat and playmaker Jai Reyes, however, helped swing the momentum back to the side of the Blue Eagles, who never looked back en route to a quarterfinal showdown with either Mapua Institute of Technology or Manuel L. Quezon University.

Abaya led the Bonnie Tan-mentored Pirates with 16 points, while Santiago and Difuntorum each had nine.

San Beda College, meanwhile, relied on a blistering start to turn back CESAFI runners-up University of San Jose-Recoletos, 98-83. Bam Gamalinda, who led the Red Lions with 18 points, opened the floodgates for the defending, three-peat NCAA champions by spearheading a second quarter attack that gave his team its first double-digit lead of the game, 34-24, in the second period.

Gamalinda, along with Sam Ekwe, Borgie Hermida and JR Tecson, then launched a 19-7 run that gave the Red Lions a 53-31 edge at halftime.

Coach Frankie Lim’s charges never let up in the second half and staved off any potential comeback by the Jaguars, who were paced by star gunner Luther Justiniani’s 17 point-performance.

The Red Lions now await the winner of the Arellano University-Universal College of Nursing Sweet 16 tiff.

    go san beda fight!!!

  • kilamar13 says:

Looks like the team’s exposure in the PBL is paying off. tecson is starting to step up for the red lions. keep it up!

    Animo San Beda!

  • old blue says:

Too bad the media hype for PCCL had been very low. I had checked the internet & none of the major news papers had an article of its opening day. Only Inboundpass had info on its opening, play dates & venues, and where to watch it on TV (CS/9) if you cannot make it to the Arena.
On TV, I also noticed that very few attended the opening. I just hope that media gives this league more attention which it really deserves.
I hope Chris Tiu plays in the succeeding games. I miss his court leadership.

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

Bagsak ba si Ryan Buenafe kaya hindi naglalaro?

  • Ice Ice Baby says:

    @ Old Blue

I agree, kulang talaga ang media exposure. Wala pa naman BTV sa Sky (subscription lang). But Inquirer had an article on the opening day yesterday and results today.

Kung tutuusin, there are really good matchups in this tournament. Like the FEU/JRU game and UV/UE. Ayos siguro panoorin yun. Sana makanood ako live.

  • nyorke says:

Indeed JRU-FEU game will be the thing to watch in the Sweet 16 round, This saturday i might watch the live games =) Im betting on FEU though, and in the first match Im with the SSCR-Cavite against Letran.

  • daym says:

Panget kasi ng opening games, obvious yung mananalo.

  • old blue says:

Campus rumors say that Buenafe needs to catch up on his studies. He has contributed so much to Ateneo. We pray that he improves on his academic and hope the ateneo community provide him with all help that he needs.
We also miss Jobe and hope that he would be able to play for Ateneo again.

    Go Ateneo. One Big Fight.

  • JcRarah25 says:

Now, Im right. I said this before to those southern team who support your USJ-R Jaguars. You prove nothing, you trying to impost to me that I should respect your team. How could I respect them? If they never have a chance to match up to our reigning 3-peat NCAA Champions, the San Beda College Red Lions?
I said this before, respect have to be “EARNED” and “NOT TO IMPOST IT!”. In your dreams that the you southern team will go up the Final? Ang Tayog naman.

No don’t even know coach Franky Lim of San Beda is watching your team already during your match in CESAFI(tama ba yung type ko?). Almost to defeat Letran in wildcard is not enough to much up on our NCAA team.

Another thing, sa mga tatamaan bahala kayo kung ano ang gusto nyung sabihin sa akin, i really don’t care. Im just saying the facts, and not hoax of dreaming anything.

    peace.
    Mabuhay Rizal!

  • nyorke says:

ahhh so is that the main reason why Buenafe didnt saw action yesterday? too bad, sana makalaro siya lalo n kapag nakapasok na sa round of 8 at final 4

  • JcRarah25 says:

To the JRU vs. FEU, well its a good fight coz NCAA vs. UAAP will clash, it’s a close fight i guess, I can’t select of both team even Im here at JRU side. FEU is well respected team.
In the FEU side, they have a very good guards like Barroca, Baracael, and Forward swing men Fernandez.
On the JRU side, they much better advantage in the in-side because of Nocom, Sena, Hayes, and Njie. Another thing, JR Bulangis is injured during the practice.

A good outside vs. good inside.
That is fact, and not hoax.
    Mabuhay Rizal!

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    How about Jobe Nkemakolam?
Did he already made progress about his academics or still a struggling student? I believe this guy (cant call him kid since he’s older than me but I have already graduated) will be a rock star come PROS. I will never forget the time he dunked on Alwyn Espiritu and rocked the whole gym!
I know he lives in Sampaloc. Galicia street ata. Then why didn’t he just studied in NU or FEU or UST? The said schools are a lot closer, in fact walking distance. Di pa siya masyadong masisita about his studies.

  • tamSports says:

tama na ang bashing ng thread! at mas mainam nga nman magTagalog n lang ung mga hindi sanay magEnglish, baka mas mamislead ung makakabasa sa gusto natin iparating.

    Ok lang magyabang
    Kasi pagtalunan
    Uuwi Luhaan!

    Go Cebu!
    Go UV!
    Go USC!

  • JcRarah25 says:

Clarification, Im not bashing any teams here! It so happend some of southern fans dosen’t like what I’ve said before. Im just saying the fact that they are not good enough to go in the Championship.

  • Chonosphere says:

I said before, this southern team are just playing in the sake of discovery. They are nothing but a bunch of losers!
Where not cocky You’ve taste the power of Sam Ekwe and NCAA champs San Beda!

    Animo!

  • Meconium says:

    Hoy Chonosphere,
Ang sakit mu naman magsalita. Iniisip mu ang mga players but in fact, this tournament is for the schools.

  • RedKnights says:

    Whatever…
It’s obvious na Manila-based team ang magchachampion ngaun! hwag na patulan mga taga South. Hehehehe halata nman ang uuwing luhaan hahahahaha!

  • nyorke says:

JRU vs FEU on saturday! wala nman pasok kaya punta tayo sa Arena para manood!

yung mga mahilig magBash dito dun sa Arena kayo mag EyeBall para makapanood rin kami ng boxing =)

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    @ NYORKE,
I completely agree man. You are absolutely right!

  • kobe24 says:

maganda laban nyan, red lions vs arellano…. pero syempre, red lions mananalo.. hehe

  • deltateneo says:

the best tlga ang mga tga AB interdisciplinary studies laging may probs sa acads ;) woooot!

  • Grrr! says:

If Ryan Buenafe had suited up for another team, he would probably pass the ocurse without even attending classes. But that is not the way for the blue and white. If he fails to join the team next year for academnic reasons like Jobe (saan ba sila nang galing?), the Blue Eagles will have a difficult time next year in defending the crown. Difficult time only, because they’ll still repeat while Rabeh and the rest are around.

After winning the NCAA crown in ’69, the then ADMC’s lineup was decimated in ’70 with the loss of Francis Arnaiz, Joy Cleofas, Marte Samson due to adcademic reasons. Only Frank Harn, Lyle Ross, and the bearded Ricky Palou carried for the team. Unfortunately, they were not enough to stem the horde of CSJL led by the triumvirate of Regullano, Marcelo and Hines.

As for Buenafe, maybe it’s time for him to join his cousin in the PBA. At least that will give the other UAAP teams a fighting chance next year.

  • Charlie says:

While it may be true that the “Manila teams” (actually, more of the NCAA/UAAP teams) are the more favored ones, it’s also true that these “Manila teams” are salivating at adding up some of the players from the provincial or “lesser-known” teams to their rosters. It’s happened in the past, and it will continue to happen — the migration (although not en masse) of the best players from the other leagues to the UAAP/NCAA will continue. This also hampers the development of programs in the provinces. But, this is a reality that can’t be stopped. We expect the scores to definitely be closer in the round of 8. Whatever happens, the PCC is good for local basketball, no matter what anyone else says.

  • blown says:

eh kung si faundo nga ng letran eh
(remember him?) di nakapaglaro last ncaa season due to academic reasons eh letran na yun ah. imagine kung gano ka (you know) yung player na yun. sayang.

  • nyorke says:

I agree on that sir Charlie, a very very good example is EAC losing 17 year-old,6′ 7″ African Forward/Center
    Emanuel Mbe to UST.

  • 3peat says:

    Go San Beda Fight !!!

Red & White 2x Fight Team Fight !!!

  • daym says:

you’re talking as if Buenafe is Michael Jordan. What’s his average in the UAAP? 7 pts.? PBA? Dang! He didn’t even score 30 pts. in his UAAP career yet. So much more to improve.

  • Tagalog na Bisdak says:

Ang kontrabida dito ABS-Skycable and Basketball channel. Screw them both.

  • Tagalog na Bisdak says:

Buenafe / Nkemakolam are now haunted by the ghosts of Cleofas/Arnaiz and whats-his-name Sampaloc boy. Sayang naman. Abutan na lang sila ng leakage.

  • bystander says:

    @Grrr!

You know your basketball history. Nice anecdote on the Cleofas-Arnaiz-Samson champion team. Arguably one of the strongest Ateneo teams ever assembled, they could have brought more championships to Katipunan no doubt. Especially in the case of Mr. Clutch, I had always wondered why he played for the Blue Eagles for only one year. And so now I know.

(Grabeh! We’re probably the only ones among the posters here who still remember these names?)

  • bystander says:

    @Tagalog na Bisdak

On Skycable and the Basketball Channel, I second the motion.

  • RedKnights says:

    ROUND 1 TING! TING!

  • Grrr! says:

    @bystander,

actually cleofas and samson were given the chance to remedy their academic deficiecies (like ryan and jobe). but the two opted to play ball in the MICAA for Yco. of course, that option was much influenced by the “allowance” from Yco. wala pang bayad nun dahil amateur pa ang ballplayers (kuno!)so allowances lang. samson eventually got a college degree from NU. as for cleofas, i don’t know if he ever finished college. arnaiz naman was taken in by meralco and from there, its history…as his teamup exploits with the great Big J is still the recalled vividly by basketball fanatics.

  • bedista_chick08 says:
