Letran, USJ-R reach Sweet 16 Round

It was a crowded Ormoc City superdome on the final day of the PCC Zone 3 elimination round. It started with an exhibition game between the ACLC Titans and the BIT-CT Cruisers were the Cruisers won, 99-97.
The battle for 3rd featured the West Negros University Mustangs against the University of Cebu Webmasters.
The Mustangs immediately took the driver seat in the 1st half, 39-31. The Webmasters then took the lead with a 3:04 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, 50-51. The Mustangs managed to keep the game close but lost their composure in the end game.
The Mustangs were led by Jeff Jacinto 14 points and 4 Rebounds followed by Virgelio Dapar with 10 Points and Briton Javelona with 10 points and 3 Steals to his credit.
The Webmasters had a double – double contribution from none other than Junemar Fajardo with 29 Points, 22 Rebs, and 5 Blocked Shots followed by Janssen Abella with 22 Points and Kelvin Juliani with 12 Points.
In the main event of the evening, the Letran Knights experienced an unfamiliar situation in the tournament – they were behind the USJ-R Jaguars since the start - until the 3rd quarter, 58-63.
In the 4th Quarter, the Knights tied the game at 82-all with 12.4 seconds left in regulation.  Letran’s Regin Ranises committed an unnecessary foul on the Jaguars’ Mannie Gabas but failed to convert on both free throw attempts. With 9 seconds left, Letran’s RJ Jazul was the likely hero as he converted on a jumper with no time to spare. The final score, 84-82 in favor of Letran.
RJ Jazul had 14 points to lead the Knights with Dino Daa and Jam Cortes contributing 11 points each. Ranulfo Malinao led the Jaguars with 22 points followed by Luther Justiniani with 20 points and 7 rebounds and Mannie Gabas with 17 points and 6 rebounds.
The Letran Knights and the USJ-R Jaguars will advance to the sweet 16 round. Letran will face San Sebastian College – Recoletos Cavite while the USJ-R Jaguars will face current NCAA Champion – the San Beda Red Lions.

we really enjoy the game… it is so fun and exciting… but onething why is it that GUEVARRA of letran didnt play of all the games???? huh!
The game yesterday between Knights and Recoletos was so entertaining with 1 second left in the game Jazul(13) of Letran hit a crucial shot. The game Jaguars lead the whole time until that crucial shot. But mind you guys letran can’t stop the guards of Recoletos namely Justiniani and Ponce.

14. USJR “Jaguars”
15-16 (PCC goes to Mindanao for the last two spots!)
Close games like the one betwen Letran-USJR serve as wake-up calls to the NCAA and UAAP schools, who may feel that because their leagues are more “popular”, they would have an easier time. The teams from the different regions are for real. Almost every game was hard fought, and we expect more upsets during the PCC proper.
Regional teams may up-end a sleeping NCAA or UAAP team occasionally. But a fully reved up top NCAA/UAAP team is still unbeatable by any regioanl pretender.
Though USJR is a strong team, CSJL just exerted enough effort for the win. I surmise the Manila team played with one hand tied behind its back to make it exciting for the overflowing crowd.
I predict the final four will be an all Metro Manila show with the Lancers from Cebu a distant but possible entrant.
watch out Manila Teams…
Cebu team are more competitive this year like USJR Jaguars.. they are not so tall but quick and talented.. Be careful to team…
As well as the UV green Lancers, as of now they are in their weakest line-up ever had.. but surprisingly they able to reach the PCCL…
So be careful to them….
yeah right,whatever you say the Cebu teams just tasted the blitskrieg of what a powerhouse NCAA school can do to your schools out there.
Letran still won the game so buzz off!!,
Cebu schools may have talented, aggressive, and tall players, but still you can’t beat the powerhouse teams here in Manila.
La Salle, UE, Lyceum, and Ateneo are my bet to win the PCC.
In the coming UAAP – NCAA Bantay Bata showdown, the
NCAA chose to select only one player from the
respectable runner up, the JRU Heavy Bombers. I hope
and pray, that this hard working team wins this
prestigious tournament or at least performs better than
the over rated scaRED team and other NCAA teams as
well. Then they can proudly shout and feel,
“VINDICATED”!!!!!!!
@Jhocson Univ. Bloodhounds
well the scaRED team that you’re pertaining to was as hardworking 3 seasons before as the runner-up team that they defeated in the finals last september..I bet you’ll call them(JRU) names din sa future kapag nag-champion na din sila (if you’re not one of them)
That’s the bad thing about us people,we do say good things to someone if they’re making good efforts to achieve their goals pero pag nakuha na nila yun and tuloy-tuloy na yung success,we see it as something negative. Yun bang feeling natin na “o tapos ka na,kami naman or tama na pagbigyan mo naman yung iba”
makes sense right?peace
ANIMO!
@Jhocson Univ. Bloodhounds
Maybe you are the scaRED one? or your still bitter on what the outcome of JRU last season?
and I Don’t Give a Damn care on what team perform better than the other, what is important is that NCAA teams will perform their BEST in the PCCL.
ahhmmm.. rely? letz just see in the PCCL….
may the Best team Wins…
kailangan muna makaSurvive ng UE sa firstRound ng PCC sweet 16, or is it the other way around, mapapalaban ang UV sa UE =)
no question a manila-based team will be the champion this year’s PCC Sweet 16….they have a lot of talented players and most importantly well-experienced coaches and a high level of competition….but i bet they should have hard times against Cebuano teams because we Cebuanos play basketball with lots of heart… I tell you this year UV has its weakest line-up, yet,I strongly believe time will come that Cebuano teams will dominate Philippine collegiate basketball…let’s go Sugbo!!!!
hey, tagal na ko ndi nkapag visit in this great site for real hard colligiate basketball. Well, we here in JRU was fine, its still ok if only JR Sena will represent our team in the up coming all stars battle. Maybe coach Franky Lim saw the other potentials of other players from other NCAA schools that would be able to match the UAAP stars. No hard feelings
On the other hand, to the cebuano schools out there, I absolutely agree that Manila teams will go and remain in the PCL. We dont care if the battle was CLOSE! Letran is one of the best team in the Philippines. And read these carefully, all of you are “NO MATCH” in the UAAP nor the NCAA teams.
No matter what you all want to say, the UAAP and abosulutely the NCAA are the best leagues in the Philippines
Woohoo!! Hapit na kombate!!
Bisdaks in NCAA:
Dino Daa: Waray-Waray
Cagoco / Escobal: Dabaw Inihaw
Bam Gamalinda: Iligan Boy
JR Tecson: Sugbo-anon
Dunni about UAAP
To: JcRarah25, UAAP is the best league in the country, NCAA where you belong just comes second, hehehehe naghahanap ka pa ng kadamay eh. basahin mo post ni Tagalog Bisdak, NCAA teams has players from the South kaya konti Respeto pare.
Ok lang magyabang
kac pag natalo nman
uuwi luhaan
nyahahaha!
Go USJR!
Go UV!
One big Pa-it! Viva Ateneo de Colon! Animo La Salle Junquera!!
hmmmm….. PCC? 0h no d0ubt bout it…. there are so many competitive collegiate teams who will battle of the pride as national collegiate basketball champion…. But these are my Elite 8….
1. Ateneo Blue Eagles
2. JRU Heavy Bombers
3. San Beda Red Lions
4. FEU Tamaraws
5. DLSU Green Archers
6. UE Red Warriors
7. SSC-R Golden Stags
8. CSJL Knights
And my final four:
1. Ateneo Blue Eagles
2. JRU Heavy Bombers
3. San Beda Red Lions
4. FEU Tamaraws
Goodluck to all of these colleges & universities!!!!!!
Mabuhay Rizal!
One Big Fight Ateneo!
Animo San Beda!
Bravo Baste!
Arriba Letran!
wg na kau magsalita!!!!
Obvious namang mananalo NCAA eh kht JR Sena lng representative ng JRU Heavy Bombers!!!!!
UAAP Universities just keep y0ur mouth shut ok?
GOD BLESS THE JOSE RIZAL UNIVERSITY HEAVY BOMBERS.
PERIOD.
Hey guys, don’t blow your guns, I come in peace.
I believe that Jhocson Univ. Bloodhounds is just seeking justice and equality in choosing the delegates in the coming Bantay Bata UAAP – NCAA Showdown. The San Beda Red Lions send, I think, six players while their bridesmaids the JRU Team has only one. Letran and SSC-R has three, right? And that’s just….. not equal.
Concerning the coming Philippine Collegiate Championship, that’s a perfect venue for not just claiming a huge prize but revenge and respect, or vice-versa. And of course, “VALIDATION”. And according to Jhocson Univ. Bloodhounds, “VINDICATION”.
Peace.
Uhm hope walang daya ang PCC like what happened to the recent collegiate leagues.
People wants to see competitive Basketball, not political interest.
@Waray Diha
I understand your belief that UAAP schools are better and more competitive compared to their NCAA counterpart because if you’re not from a NCAA or UAAP institution,you’ll have a difficulty of understanding na publicity lang or marketing lang talaga lamang ang UAAP schools..
No doubt; Ateneo, San Beda, La Salle, Letran and UST will always be in the list ng pinaka-competitive na schools in the country in terms of basketball. Even they belong to different leagues, its not right to conclude that UAAP are better kasi there are teams sa UAAP na “no match” against the top teams of NCAA. And if you’re not familiar sa history, these 3 top UAAP schools once belongs to NCAA..
Let’s face it pre. Manila-based schools will always be once step ahead sa basketball kasi andito ang best coaches and schools to help them achieve the exposure and experience na kailangan ng bawat players. ☺
Good luck na lang ☺
peace men ☺
☺
Yes, may be some of the players come from the south, but they represent the schools here in manila, what the point in that? and what the hell is bistak?, Anyways I dont understand what you saying out there, if its NCAA or UAAP they abosuletly the greatest colligiate basketball here in the Philippines. If you think its only basketball? Well, think again, its the brand of the legue we came from and the school that they represent.
Dont be over joy coz you almost defeat Letran. because all of you are still loosers
I agree to JcRarah25, even some of the players of the UAAP or NCAA are come from the south, they still represent the name of schools here in Manila. I saw some CESAFI games in the BTV, the teams in the CESAFI are absolutely no match in the Manila based school. They have no height and no very reliable people who can score.
Lets face it guys, some of your players out there want to play here in Manila for the sake of “DISCOVERY”. Well, the PCC maybe the key for that. HAHAHA, naka-tsamba lang na nakarating are UV sa championship last year, see ndi nga sila naka sabay sa laro ng UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles right?
Eh anu ngaun kung 7 time champion kayo sa CESAFI?
Wala yan dahil hindi yan kilala at hindi ka-prestige tulad ng UAAP Championship at NCAA Championship. Tandaan nyu yan
@JcRa-ulo
Woohoo!!! Pikon na!!! Kahit di niya alam kung sino kausap niya.
@ Chronosphere,
“Lets face it guys, some of your players out there want to play here in Manila for the sake of “DISCOVERYâ€Â. Well, the PCC maybe the key for that. HAHAHA, naka-tsamba lang na nakarating are UV sa championship last year, see ndi nga sila naka sabay sa laro ng UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles right?”
His words are quite painful, but I really have to agree not by Chronosphere’s words but his idea.
Wow I almost forgot, Pong Escobal has left the San Beda Red Lions. He is now burning the bench of the Talk n Text Tropang Texters.
guys..were all filipino..let’s respect one another though we came through different schools and universities..we have one goal here..its the unity of all schools and universities through the game of basketball..if you have seen the game Letran – USJ-R it is really pretty entertaining game.. the Letran was surprised by the guards of USJ-R..they really have hard time coping up but lately through undying fighting spirit of the Letran Player and their veteran coach..they were able to cope up in d late 4th quarter run..and come up with a clutch basket that ended the game in favor of Letran..both of them deserve to be in Sweet 16.
*Manila Based Team are a lot advertised and trained by well known coaches in manila. They are considered to be the Favorites to occupy the elite 8 and final 4, especially the powerhouse La Salle, Ateneo, San Beda. They already have what it takes to take the Crown.
*Cebu Team are considered a full of surprised team. Coming from the latest success of UV last year as Runner-up,they still are dangerous this year. Though UV now is on there weakest line-up but still they are towered by the bigman Greg Slaughter and outside bomber like Von Lañete and Richard Dennison. One team that really played hard every game is the USJ-R team. They have an eye-cathing run and gun play and annoying team defence. I am really eyeing on the USJ-r team.
though we cannot deny the fact the manila team has d advantage in playing in a familiar environment, they are very strong team,but im eyeing on the USJ-R team. I just like to support underdog team..hehehe..^^
yah.. ur ryt…!!!
all of them are deserve to be in Sweet 16…
May the best Team Wins…
lets just see who will gonna be Champion this Year..
Gudluck to all teams….
this is a good development for collegiate basketball unlike previous type tournaments where some teams, especially manila universities and colleges do not take the games seriously. the qualifying games shows the intent to make it in the tournament. i hope the organizers sustain this vision so that we truly determine the best college basketball team in the country.
@dizzyroar
Yup Peace man, pero hangat may nagyayabang kac na tulad ni JCRajah mas maraming misunderstanding na mangyayari sa thread na ito. If i concluded that UAAP is the best, its a reply to him.
I will still hope and Pray na nonUAAP at nonNCAA ang magchampion ngaun sa PCC, its a long shot pero bilog parin ang bola.
GO UV
GO USJR
yah tama ka Waray Diha…
It will not be shocking f d manila teams will be champions this year, but if matalo sila ng provincial teams mas shocking diva….
Well i wish all the teams in sweet 16 gudluck..
May the best team wins…
GO University of the Visayas Green Lancers…
Adelante University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars…

When the then CCL was a post NCAA/UAAP season exhibiton league, the top four teams of the NCAA and UAAP were automatically seeded in the round of 16. With the entry of FEU in the current PCCL, the wisdom of the organizers to seed the top Manila teams in the past seems to hold true today.
It looke like there are 5 NCAA teams in the PCCL, if we consider Arellano U Chiefs as part of the mix. It looks like the Chiefs are almost a shoo in to replace PCU. Is Coach Leo Isaac handling the Chiefs too? It would be interesting if MIT and AU meet each other somehwere along the tournament, if Isaac coaches both teams.
@Grrr!
They tried to make it more democratic but the bottomline is still the same. The top 4 teams in both the UAAP and NCAA are in the Sweet 16. Pinahirapan lang nila yung #3 and 4 ng UA at NC pero ganun din.
Looking at the bright side, the advantage for these teams, in my view, is that they get more practice while the UA and NC champs and runners-up remain idle (or rusty?) for a while. Not good considering that the CCL has a win-or-go-home format.
@bystander – at least by going through the elimination process, the non-seeded NCAA and UAAP teams now take the games seriously. Before, their hearts were not into it (especially the champions – who just won the prize NCAA or UAAP plums). I believe the major reason today why every game is fought for – is the 500,000 cash prize to be given to the champion team (also a similar amount to the schools). With that kind of money to be won, patay kung patay ang labanan, instead of the sleeper exhibiton games we saw in the past.
another additional cebu team USC Wariors…
it would be 4 UAAP, 4 NCAA, 3 CESAFI, 2 NCRAA, 1 NAASCU, 1 CUSA, 1 UCAA….
guduck to all teams in Sweet 16…
VIVA Pit SEñor….
GO USC WARIORS….
GO USJR JAGUARS…
GO UV GREEN LANCERS………………..
truly entertaining yung game between Letran and USJR in ormoc city. truly a very hard fought game…the win was a miracle made possible by undying fighting spirit and prayer…truly…
well, for your information, im not a man. So don’t use word “his”. I am a women for your information. Hindi ako nag sasabing mayabang ang manila based team. We really mean it! We prove it many times.
And don’t say that the UAAP is number 1 unlyk the NCAA, well think again for the 2nd time. NCAA and UAAP are all manila based team, and how could you say that UAAP is number 1? When you are not one of them.
Kaya nga the planning of merging of NCAA and UAAP are still one of the major plans in Colligiate Basketball
Im not a racist, Im saying the truth
@waray diha
From what school are you? Anyway, may iba iba naman characteristics ang bawat school sa dalawang major league (UAAP & NCAA). You can’t just say UAAP is no.1. i mean what are your basis? If your basis is the recently result of the All STAR game where UAAP beat the NCAA this year, you’re absolutely WRONG! You can’t just based it there..
Bravo!
@racer_sebastianista
Dont worry about what i said i have lots of respect to UAAP and NCAA, kaya ko lang sinasabi yan para ipoint out kay Rajah25_SOlayman na kahit papano dapat marunong siya magbigay respeto sa pagpopost dito, what i said was actually a reply to her line, ito po iyon:
“On the other hand, to the cebuano schools out there, I absolutely agree that Manila teams will go and remain in the PCL. We dont care if the battle was CLOSE! Letran is one of the best team in the Philippines. And read these carefully, all of you are “NO MATCH†in the UAAP nor the NCAA teams.
No matter what you all want to say, the UAAP and abosulutely the NCAA are the best leagues in the Philippines”
So that was the story.
@waray diha
O i see. Anyway, its her opinion… But instead of saying that UAAP is No.1 compared to the NCAA, why dont you just lift your own league? Siyempre may mga magrereact sayo dito na NCAA member school when you say UAAP is no.1 compared to NCAA… Of course, magpapa daig ba ang mga NCAA member school, i don’t think so..
