Respect.  The three-time NCRAA champs and current Father Martin Cup holders earned this, and everybody’s attention by beating heavily favored University of Santo Tomas, while University of the East and Lyceum-Manila also advanced to the ‘Sweet 16’ of the Philippine Collegiate Championship last November 6, 2008 at the Makati Coliseum.

Lyceum College of the Philippines (81) vs University of Nueva Caceres (60)

The Lyceum Pirates had 11 three-pointers and converted 14 of 18 shots from the foul line as they took the Bicolanos to school.

Guard Eiguio Abrahim delivered 25 points, while Reggie Rimando and Joseph Abaya chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively. Shooter Fritz Ong added 10 points for the Pirates. UNC committed 30 errors due to the defensive intensity of the Pirates.

After a 17-11 lead in first quarter, the Pirates’ running game and stifling defense earned them a 47-23 spread by halftime. The Greyhounds remained clueless as to what hit them throughout the 2nd half.

Marlon Casaldon carried the fight for Nueva Caceres with 17 points.

Lyceum will face UAAP Season 71 champs Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles in the ‘Sweet 16.’

University of the East (108) vs Saint Clare (80)

Defense served as the Red Warriors’ calling card.

UE delivered a crushing blow to the Saints after whipping the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals on opening day by garnering a tournament-high 25 steals, nine of which were accounted for by guard Lucas Tagarda.  St. Clare, for its part, committed 32 turnovers.

Offensively, the Red Warriors were blazing hot as they made 37 of 86 attempts from the field and converted 31-of-41 shots from the free throw line. The Red Warriors also outrebounded the Saints, 53-39.

Tagarda had 19 points, while Paul Zamar chipped in for 16 points. James Martinez also added 11 points for UE. The Red Warriors had a 23-15 first quarter lead and a 44-28 edge at halftime.

The Red Warriors will battle the University of Visayas Green Lancers in the ‘Sweet 16’ of the PCC.

Arellano University (69) vs University of Santo Tomas (59)

Orlando Daroya put on an all-around display that served to compound his opponents’ woes all-season long. The 6-foot-3 swingman was a man possessed as he tallied a tournament-high 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pilot the Chiefs to the ‘Sweet 16′ and an upset of University of Santo Tomas

With UST struggling from beyond the arc after posting an 0-of-15 clip, Arellano was scoring at will on its way to an encounter with UCAA titlists Univeral College of Nursing Dragons.

The Chiefs took advantage of UST’s mental lapses by scoring 27 turnover points off of 22 Tiger TOs.

Arellano started the game on a high note by registering a 21-15 first quarter lead.

The Chiefs managed to control their double-digit margin until the the end of the 3rd quarter. The Growling Tigers then ignited a fourth quarter to narrow the gap, 51-57, with 5:02 minutes left in regulation.

Daroya’s eight straight points in the final three-minute mark sealed the win for Arellano. Jordan Melano contributed 10 points for the Chiefs, who managed to tally 16 assists and 19 steals.

“Our entry into the Sweet 16 is a way of saying that this school needs to be recognized after winning the NCRAA title twice,” said Arellano coach Leo Isaac.

what the hell is wrong with UST?
mukhang mahihirapan na sila makabangon next season.
but anyway, it’s great to see that Arellano is now
emerging as one of the basketball power in college
hoops. sana makapasok sila sa NCAA.

can’t wait to see the Red Lions play again. :))

  • Kritiko says:

mukhang coaching and motivation issue. the talent is there pero di ma-utilize ng husto for some reason. and dont tell me dahil hindi naglaro si jervy at japs. by this time, dapat nakapag-adjust na sila.

  • veeno says:

    @ the-bedista-bomb

  • slanidrac says:

pnu un? dba parehas ng coach ang mapua at arellano? d ba parehas c isaac?

  • gienecees says:

i think UST played well in the wildcard and zonal phase guys, but they were just outclassed by a very very good team of Arellano U, actually mas madali masabi na Arellano was the better team in that meet.

    There are Good teams
    There are Better teams
But there can only be 1 National Champion!

  • tagamasid says:

  • SWEET 16 Update says:

    SWEET 16 Update

    Lyceum Philippines vs Ateneo
MAPUA vs Manuel L Quezon U
Arellano vs Universal College of Nursing
    UE vs UV

waiting for results of Zone3 and Zone4
    Qualifiers:

    SAN BEDA vs ?
    JRU vs ?
    DLSU vs ?
    SSCR-C vs ?

  • gienecees says:

Ang tanong kung sakali they beat the odds, which team will he give up? =)

  • Mike says:

Zone 3 and 4 are still on-going. As soon as the results are in, we will know who their respective opponents will be.

  • Mike says:

Arellano’s inclusion in the NCAA is now a possibility. They just have to undergo Audit – like facilities, expecially recruitment etc.

  • TheScoutman says:

San na pupunta ang PCU after season 84? hay can’t wait to see AU to play in the NCAA.

    Mike,

Will CEU, EAC, and Lyceum enters NCAA by 2010?

  • TheScoutman says:

I think UST should terminate Pido Jarencio because he’s philosophy and system is not working anymore with the team.

Alfrancis Chua and Binky Favis played for UST before, i suggest the Sports Admin of UST to choose between these two professional coaches.

  • Charlie says:

Such a disappointing season for UST…terrible UAAP record and now, getting booted out by the Chiefs. We have to hand it to Arellano. Two weeks ago, Chris Soler and I got into a discussion before appearing on One U, and Chris said that if the Arellano line-up is complete, they have a good chance of “upsetting” UST. He was right. How far the mightiest from 3 UAAP seasons ago has fallen! Kudos to the Chiefs. It’s gonna be exciting.

  • Glena Marie Banda says:

    @ Everybody,

cover, sabi dun Arellano Flaming Arrows. Bakit ngayun

Arellano Chiefs na? The former is quite better than the

latter. Since when was their moniker changed and can

    anyone please tell me why.

  • norms says:

    UE vs St. Clare

  • Mike says:

Unfortunately, the referee that was “spree” handled was a rook and the venerable lead assitant coach of the Saints apparently lost it.

  • slanidrac says:

    thanks gienecees

  • melvin says:

    naglaro ba si jervy cruz????

  • Mike says:

Jervy Cruz did not play because of a hamstring injury that he suffered since the the season. In fact, Jervy Cruz was hurting all season. As you may know, the only remedy for this kind of injury is complete rest.

  • TheScoutman says:

Arellano University is stronger than other NCAA SCHOOLS. I think they can match up with San Beda, but if ekwe will still play with the lions, i think AU will lose.
Hope CSB could make it next season

  • Mr. JJ says:

    no scoutman,
Ekwe won’t play anymore with the Red Lions.
But, there’s someone who will replace him :D

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    Holy Sh*t!

The University of the Visayas Green Lancers will

already face the dangerous UE Red Warriors in the

    very

first round? I don’t think the Green Lancers have a

chance. I mean, c’mon, that’s the UE Red Warriors.

They are big time chokers, yes, but they are still

one hell of a basketball team.

UE Red Warriors by 5 points.

  • Charlie says:

The Arellano Flaming Arrows changed their monicker to Chiefs just a couple of years ago, in honor of Cayetano Arellano, whom the school is named after, being the first CHIEF Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court. Thus, unlike the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL in the States whose “Chiefs” refer to Native Americans wearing long feathery headdresses, the Arellano version is more of stoic, allegedly impartial and unbiased gentlemen (and now, women) in long black robes. Go figure.

  • pogi says:

malakas b un st. clare saints?
