Cardinals, Growling Tigers, Pirates win in PCC Zonals

The Mapua Cardinals have made it to the ‘sweet 16’ round after earning another lopsided win last November 5, 2008. Lyceum College of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas also joined in the fray.
Lyceum-Manila (87) vs Don Bosco (79)
Joseph Abaya was scorching from almost everywhere, finishing with 23 points to lead the Pirates, who also registered 32-of-57 attempts from the field.
After a close first half (40-37), Lyceum did whatever it takes to pin down Don Bosco in the 2nd half.
The Pirates forced Don Bosco to 30 turnovers (21 in the 2nd half). Relying heavily on their stifling defense the Pirates stretched their lead in the 3rd quarter, 67-57. Lyceum also had 13 steals.
Fritz Ong had 12 points, while Mark Igtiban and Aaron Anacta delivered 10 points apiece. Forward Glenn Taguibao had a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds for the Pirates.
University of Santo Tomas (102) vs Saint Louie University (52)
After earning a 23-17 lead in the first quarter, the 2006 UAAP champion UST Growling Tigers took a commanding 30-point lead.
The Growling Tigers had their biggest lead at 84-42 after a Clark Fortuna basket with 8:02 minutes left in the 4th quarter.
Mark Canlas, Fortuna, Christopher Camus and Jackson Wong each had 11 points. While Emillian Vargas had 10 points and Kazim Mirzam hauled down 11 rebounds and dished out 4 assists for the Growling Tigers.
UST collected 33 rebounds and 28 assists.
The Growling Tigers shot 31-of-53 from the field and 9-of-25 from beyond the arc while making 13-of-20 shots from the free throw line.
Mapua (77) vs University of Luzon (59)
The Cardinals started the second quarter with a blazing 14-0 blast for a 28-14 lead with 9:04 minutes to go in the 1st quarter and was never threatened despite the resistance of UL. It was a 45-34 halftime lead before an insurmountable 69-46 spread. Mapua had 10 three pointers triples to break the rock-solid defense of University of Luzon.
Forward Melvin Sarangay had 11 points and 9 rebounds, feasted on UL’s defense in the 2nd half with his skills at the post and pushed the Cardinals to a 67-46 by the end of the 3rd quarter.
TJ Guillermo had 18 points, including 4 triples, to lead the Cardinals. While Ian Mazo had 14 points and Erwin Cornelio made 10 points. Norman Ilao contributed 12 points and 17 rebounds for University of Luzon.
Mapua is set to face the Manuel Luis Quezon University Stallions in the sweet 16 round.
