POWERHOUSE University of the East, three-time NCRAA champion and recent Father Martin Cup titlists Arellano University and University of Luzon began their campaigns for ‘sweet 16’ slots in the Philippine Collegiate Championship on high notes at the Makati Coliseum last November 3, 2008.

Arellano University (82) vs Saint Louis University (36)

Was it a case of altitude problems? Baguio’s Saint Louis University Navigators couldn’t find their way in Manila. While SLU failed to score for almost six minutes in the first quarter, the Chiefs found themselves up by 22.

From thereon, the game resembled more of a scrimmage for the back-to-back NCRAA kings.

Swingman Orlando Daroya delivered 22 points, while Gio Ciriacruz and Jordan Melano combined for 18 points for the Chiefs, who have openly signified their intent to join the NCAA next season. John Fernandez, meanwhile, paced the Navigators with eight markers.

University of Luzon (79) vs Lyceum-Batangas (62)

Hotshot forward Norman Ilao’s 21 points gave PCC Region 1 qualifiers University of Luzon Golden Tigers the fourth quarter surge they needed to upset NCAA-South runner-up Lyceum-Batangas.

With just a slim 56-54 lead late in the third period, UL leaned on Ilao, who came up with three impressive plays to help extend the Golden Tigers’ advantage to high as 15 in the middle of the payoff frame.

The smaller Tigers outrebounded the Patriots, 46-35. Geran Sabordo chipped in with 12 markers for UL, who also shot 9-of-23 from three-point country compared to the 7-of-36 clip posted by Lyceum. Forward Jhon Velarde led the Patriots with 16 points, while Jamison Reyes and Gino Katigbac each had 10.

University of the East (92) vs Emilio Aguinaldo College (74)

The University of the East Red Warriors were simply unforgiving in manhandling the runners-up of the UCAA.

The UE Red Warriors, relying heavily on Pari Llagas’ 23-point output, dropped a 21-14 bomb on the Generals’ porous defense in the second quarter that stretched their lead to 11 at the half.

James Martinez poured in 19 points, including four threes, while Elmer Espiritu and Raffy Reyes contributed 13 and 10, respectively, for UE, which never trailed in the contest mostly due to consistent field goal shooting.

Ruel Jabaybay led the Generals of coach Nomar Isla with 21 points, while ace playmaker Argel Mendoza chipped in with 17.

As my moniker goes this tournament will only be successful if the (champion, seeded) teams will be sending their BEST teams…

On topic: Great to see the win by the UL Tigers vs. Lyceum. Hope they do qualify for the Sweet Sixteen!

The road to the sweet 16 has begun!

I believe UL is a very good team, they are the number 1 team in Region 1 not only in Pangasinan for how many years already, their true test however is against Mapua, if they surpass Mapua then they are meant to be in the Sweet 16.

Good luck to all the teams!

I’m sure the “scouts” are watching out for the outstanding players from the non-Metro Manila teams. We may see some of that talent moving to the “more familiar” colleges and/or universities in the next couple of years. The PCC is just a great, great concept and will eventually redound to the benefit of all basketball stakeholders in the country, unless politics rears its ugly head once again, as is usual in this country. Sweet sixteen on the way!

    Hey every body,
    Peace.
Do you guys watch the show 1U, shown on CS channel 9?
Did you guys heard Mr. Christian Soler’s comments about Nonoy Baclao and Rico Maierhofer. He said Nonoy, in time will be the number 1 pick come when he decides to enter the proffessional level, meaning the PBA. Somewhat biased and over rated, but really, he’s right. The kid (he’s still, a teenager right?) has mad skills. He looks like a fresh Vic Pablo, with a bigger nose but thats just his drive or passion to the game. And about Mr. Soler’s comments about Rico Maierhofer. Well, cant remember the words correctly, he just showed that he’s blue and not green, intellectually and intelligently.

The PCC is a great concept and i hope in the future it becomes the most prestigious title in college basketball.
I would like to point out that they should not let the teams from Manila wear their practice uniforms.
