THE JOSE Rizal University Heavy Bombers gave their school and supporters one more reason to “Keep the Faith.

Team captain Jayson Nocom delivered six of his 16 points in the pivotal fourth quarter as the Heavy Bombers forged a do-or-die match in the finals of the 84th NCAA men’s basketball tournament thanks to a 62-60 Game 2 squeaker against San Beda last September 26, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.

JRU relied on crucial defensive stops made by JR Sena and Nchotu Njei to thwart a late Red Lion comeback in front of a crowd of more than 19,000.

After Pong Escobal sank two foul shots with 34.2 ticks left that trimmed the Jose Rizal lead to two, 60-62, the Red Lions had a chance to tie or win the game after Marc Cagoco missed a lay-up with 21 seconds left.

But Escobal’s potential game-winning triple with 2.5 seconds remaining bounced off the rim despite having a clear look at the basket. Njei ended up with the rebound after a miscue and was sent to the charity stripe with 1.1 ticks left. He failed to connect on his first free throw and intentionally missed the second to hand JRU the victory.

The two squads will lock horns for a winner-take-all Game 3 on Monday, September 29, at the Big Dome.

“It was our defense that won it for us. Although we were outrebounded, we were able to limit them to only 60 points, said Ariel Vanguardia, the JRU mentor. “We are still alive and I’m sure we’ll push them to the limit on Monday.

Nocom, who also hauled down seven rebounds, scored three early big baskets to help give the Heavy Bombers a 19-14 first period lead.

“That’s our best defensive game ever but we need to be more accurate on Monday, said Nocom. “The most important game for us this season is on Monday.

The Red Lions, who drew 15 points and 13 rebounds from 2008 MVP Sam Ekwe, crawled back in the second quarter after outscoring the Heavy Bombers in a tight 10-minute period.

Things spiraled down for the defending champions in the third quarter, however. Ekwe was assessed his fourth foul with 8:10 left in third quarter while guarding Sena. “That was a lousy foul to call. His hands were up. I think that’s a lousy foul, San Beda coach Frankie Lim said.

“We’ll try to correct it in practice tomorrow, [these] defensive patterns [of ours], said Lim.

Ekwe eventually fouled out with 4:26 to go in the fourth after a driving Sena put up a shot that went in, paving the way for a three-point play.

JRU swingman John Wilson scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and caromed five rebounds, while Sena added 11 points and nine boards for JRU. Escobal led San Beda with 16 points and five rebounds.

Nocom’s undergoal stab off a Sena drop pass provided Jose Rizal a 62-58 lead with 41.4 seconds to go before Escobal hit both his free throws.

Although JRU was outrebounded, 55-34, the Heavy Bombers went wild in the open court and scored 14 fastbreak points compared to the five San Beda posted. They also outhustled the Red Lions, as shown in their +5 advantage in assists and steals.

The scores:

JRU 62 – Nocom 16, Wilson 13, Sena 11, Bulangis 7, Cagoco 4, Hayes 4, Njei 4, Pradas 3, Lopez 0, Kabigting 0.

San Beda 60 – Escobal 16, Ekwe 15, Menor 9, Taganas 5, Hermida 4, Marcelo 4, Tirona 3, Gamalinda 2, Pascual 2.

Quarter scores: 19-14; 30-28; 45-44; 62-60

NCAA Rules!

  • PedroPendejo says:

FINALLY! Sena learns how to rebound hehehe…

Looks like Game 3 will be a tight one

  • Ben says:

well nasasabi mo lang yan coz u’r at he loosing side. ekwe gave sena a bump, kita mo naderail si sena sa saksak nia paloobat kasi naitulak siya papalayo, mautak lang yung bata at naitapon niya yung bola, at swerte’t pumasok pa.. and i think ang tawag nung ref sa foul eh pushing if im not mistaken.

  • Ben says:

about sa Letran game, mismo si butch maniego nagsabi na nung tumalon si wilson to block the shot of jazul eh he is in plain vertical. and pure ball ang hawak niya, si jazul ang aggressor on that play.

  • infamous_bedista says:

san ka dun i was in the very front i didn’t see anything like that

  • justice says:

  • silent_knight says:

simply bcoz nsa san beda ung mgagaling na law grad hehehe, peace!

  • Ben says:

sayang yung last possession ng beda if not for Escobal, beda could have tied the game. and win it in over time. napansin ko lang, si escobal eh may pangit na ugali which is hindi dapat i-posses ng isang point guard. yung maninisi ng team-mates for every error. infact siya ang mostly may errors kanina and yet isinisisi niya sa ibang teammates niys, binubulyawan pa niya… hey Pong grow-up! hindi ka mag-susucceed sa pros pag ganyan! baka yan pa ang ikatalo nyo on monday!

  • NCAA FANATIC says:

    Animo San Beda!
    Mabuhay Rizal!

    @annoyed bedan

chong don’t be too negative..it’s not the right time to bash..ako di rin talaga bilib sa taong sinsabi mo, but maybe we have time to remedy that situation after the season is over..walang magagawa yang ngawngaw mo..parang naghahanap ka na kagad ng palusot in case things don’t turn well for us on monday..

for now we have to support the whole team, including the coaching staff…

instead na humirit ka ng ganyan, pray that we will have the upper side come monday..

kaya yan san beda, we believe!!!

  • LPC says:

SBC Red Lions will dominate the hopia team in the deciding game.

  • boy_toma says:

nice strategy bombers for putting the big men on foul trouble.. pinaghirapan niyo talaga ganun din naman JRU maaga na foul trouble thats what will really happen pag maganda ang defense so be careful next time d lahat nakikita ng ref. malalim ang bench ng JRU kabigting, agas and with #14 John Lopez na mukang lucky charm rin ng JRU long arms madipensa…goodluck on monday…basta walang pulang leon sa coloring book ko lng nakita yun nung kinder ako….

  • boy_toma says:

  • Concerned says:

kailan ang game 3 and what time? :)

  • yolac totu says:

next year lanete will be back..sayang di siya magamit this year kailangan yung defense niya pati contribution niya sa offensive end..

  • OLD SCHOOL BEDAN FROM MENDIOLA says:

    @annoyedbedan

What are you saying “ur red lions…”, akala ko ba Bedan ka, eh bakit ngayon “ur red lions…” ang sinasabi mo? Pag nanalo, siguro “my red lions” ang sinasabi mo! Nasa politika ba? or ang tawag dian sa tagalog – BALIMBING! I DON’T THINK YOUR A BEDAN OR A FULL RED BLOODED BEDAN! What a fool!

We Bedans are in in this together, whether we win or loose on Monday, OUR team – players and coaches dedicated themselves to this season. We should appreciate that, they gave a hell of a season to go this far! All we have to do is, as we have been taught since kindergarten in Mendiola – PRAY AND WORK HARD!

from ANNOYED BEDAN – “nuff said…sad to say ur red lions will go down bcoz of ……. … tsk! tsk! tsk! masakit pero yun ang mangyayari. no 3peat fellow bedans.”

  • red rampant says:

San Beda will loose Ekew and Escobal. Escobal will go with the PRO’s (PBA) But San Beda will have an intense training program for its players, by individual, just like waht they did with Sam Ekwe. Ekwe in his Rookie years was just a dunker and blocker but now he is more agile. HE undewent an intensive training program in which the Red Lions invest so much. Besides, San Beda will be welcoming “SUPERMAN”… San Beda’s rookie star. I have seen him play. Far better than Imeka Udo who left San Beda-good for that non deserving bedan. “SUPERMAN” is 6 foot and 7 inches but very agile. He dunks like kobe and moves like dwayne wade. Watch out for this guy, he will make NCAA famous again just like what Sam Ekwe did.

  • annoyed bedan says:

To all annoyed bedan bashers: Read this

jru will win this monday. sorry becoz of ……. … we will not get the 3peat. sayang! dami kz pumapapel sa team natin lalo na c mukish advani. inintriga c koy banal. ayan ang mapapala natin– talo tau. masakit per ganun ang mangyayari.

  • yolac totu says:

    @annoyed bedan

    tsk tsk…

hirap sayo di mo alam hirap ng isang atletang nagpapakamatay para sa school niya, pare team captain ako ng swimming team natin na ilang taon nagchampion..di mo alam ganung pakiramdam di ka kasi bedista by heart…ngayon mo sabihin sino bedista satin..

    sayang ka…

  • Red dot says:

They even allowed their band to play the Indian Yell just to continue the Tulo laway jeer tsk tsk!

  • yolac totu says:

    @annoyed bedan

ganito pare, next year apply kang coach ha..

  • annoyed bedan says:

m a true bedan and what m saying is the truth. we watched the game and we saw how frankie coached the team. d lang to dahil bedan ako or what. d me nagpapalusot per by the way things are going d tau mag cha champion ngayon. hirap sa atin blind follower tau. sana nga manalo tau but at the rate the team is going–we will not get the championship this season. matulog ka na at ako matutulog na din

  • boy_toma says:

bakit may sinabi ba kaming YELLOW RIZAL?!!!
nakakgulo kayo ng utak ng bata eh… RED LION?!!!

go for the three-peat red lions!!!

  • universal health care says:

the way escoba plays he will either be the hero or the goat. he is trying his best to be the hero as this is his last year. sinusuwapang na niya. he is forcing the game rather than reacting to the game situations – sign of an immature player with talent.

if beda loses on monday, most likely he made a bad shot or lost the ball, a turnover in the most crucial time.

i expect another down to the wire game on monday. if ekwe is around san beda’s chances are good…it’s as simple as that.

  • Ben says:

yun ang maganda sa NCAA, for men, unlike sa UAAP just for boys… kung ayaw niyo ng Physical game at kung ayaw nyo makanchawan, then its high time for your school to transfer to UAAP. dun puro santo mga tao dun. at puro bonjing!

  • universal health care says:

    yolac,

    i like your spirit!

  • universal health care says:

    @Ben,

you are right. the 2 teams leading the UAAP are ex-NCAA teams. they left because they could not stand the heat. San Beda booted Ateneo out and Letran booted LaSalle out. I remember games at Taft where lasalle could not leave the stadium as the letran crowd were already hanging around LaSalle’s exit gate before they could leave. I am proud of the NCAA and its rich history.
