It’s Ateneo

Ateneo played good enough to the Season 71 UAAP championship.
It was an awful game, especially in the 4th quarter. La Salle was able to cut a 15 point deficit down to 4. Then, all hell broke loose. Rico Maierhofer got his 2nd technical in the game when he allegedly gave the “finger to an Ateneo player.
TV replays did not show a clear picture of whether or not it was an dirty finger or the index finger that Maeirhofer pointed.  It stalled any chance La Salle had.
Just when La Salle was starting to make one final run, JVee Casio gets his 5th and final foul. That was the end.
Both teams shot miserably in the 4th. They both played good defense but could not buy a basket on the other end.
Ateneo deserves the crown. The whole season, they were heads and shoulders above the rest of the league.
They had the firepower to match up with anyone they faced. They had the defensive determination to stop anyone. This could probably be the most dominating Ateneo team to win a championship.
I won’t comment on the officiating. I have said all I could in all my columns for this season. I will say though that it would be good for the league if the UAAP gets an independent body to review every game this season. After they do so, then NABRO should be evaluated as a referees’ organization. In the end the Board will have to judge it.
La Salle on the other hand over achieved.  This was a 2 man team who would not have made the Final Four if not for Coach Franz Pumaren. The Green Archers got to the Finals because of Casio and Maierhofer and lost the Finals when both players were no longer on the court.
Ateneo will have the bragging rights for a whole year. Enjoy it. Savor it. That’s the beauty of the UAAP. There is a year to enjoy and then another season begins.
For Coach Norman Black and the entire Ateneo Blue Eagles team, congratulations.
This is THE GREEN MIND signing of for Season 71 of the UAAP.

Easy ka lang, masyado kang bitter. De Sore Losers Univ. can always pull out of the UAAP, no one’s forcing you to stay.
Last time I checked, this is a basketball forum. I may share your political views but that’s got nothing to do with cage hoops.

Did you know?
Ateneo and La Salle has ceased to be Catholic schools.
Ateneo has become adherents to the Iglesia ni Chris Tiu.
La Salle on the other hand has become protestants. They protest non-stop.

Ano ang isosoli namin? Prove it first that ADMU cheated on the 2008 finals. Otherwise, there’s no point. 4-0 Record vs. DLSU! Nyahahaha!
erm 2007 trophy? Dba 2004 or 2005 trophy yung nandaya kayo dahil ineligible players? =p
Oo nga pala… 3 out of 4 ang panalo ng finals encounters ng ADMU over DLSU tapos 18 ang TROPHIES ng ADMU sa NCAA + UAAP combined, sa inyo 12 lang =)

facts:
1. admu not for nabro, dlsu for nabro (since time ty tang was playing for dlsu)
2. uaap commish was chosen and approved by the uaap board, he didn’t apply for the position
convince your uaap board reps to address whatever issues you may have before season 72, but for now what’s done is done and you can all blame your uaap board reps for the decisions they made in behalf of your schools.

Sour grapes, what else
by Ding Marcelo
La Salle could have gone out with its head high during the championship series.
But leave it to coach Franz Pumaren to stain a great game and an exceptional Ateneo victory — and to damage his own credibility — by claiming that bad officiating did the Green Archers in.
Well, I can’t blame the guy. He’s got to justify the loss, find a scapegoat and what better scapegoat than the referees. It would be shameful if the school shared this misconception and allow this coach to rant about officiating instead of saying that his team will come back next year and play better.
He did not blame himself, did not blame his players who panicked and played selfish and, at times, arrogant, he blamed the referees. In doing so, he missed a golden chance to rise above petty partisanship and behave like a true gentleman.
By doing so, he made his players think that they are better than their opponents although they lost fair and square; and by doing so he tried to convince the La Salle community that they’ve been cheated. What kind of coach is this? Is he talking truthfully or is he simply trying to save his job?
The referees weren’t perfect, that’s for sure. They called a very tight game, worried perhaps that it might deteriorate to the point they would lose control. It just happened that Ateneo adjusted to the referees, La Salle did not.
From a neutral standpoint, there were no glaring errors that would merit the post-game tirade of Pumaren, or any call by the referee that would have altered the outcome of the game. Instead of coming out and praising the Blue Eagles for being the better team, he now claims things would have been different had the referees been less whistle happy.
His claim of referees being biased or incompetent would not have been laughable had La Salle won a game against Ateneo this season. As it is, La Salle lost all four encounters. Also, his claim that La Salle could have won the game would have been believable if La Salle did not have to struggle to make it to the Final 4 and take the second seeding through playoffs.
Instead of being grateful for having gone this far with an overachieving team, Pumaren tried to deflect the loss from his own shortcomings to his own perception that the referees “decided the game.”
What an unsportsmanlike gesture.
Imagine Pumaren saying the game was scripted for an Ateneo win. And then said he’s not sour-graping. What do you call that?
Pumaren, should learn how to accept defeat. These things come naturally. And those are values taught in La Salle schools – that you can’t win every day and every game. Apparently he was off playing basketball when these values were the topics in his classroom.
Besides, when he was winning all those games and all those titles, nobody blamed the referees even when many calls were flawed.
What makes La Salle-Ateneo games special is oftentimes not the quality of the games. It is, as has always been the case, the spirit that both schools bring to the hard court. It is the never-say-die attitude that both teams always bring in abundance that makes their games a treasure and always memorable. This is the reason why games between these two schools are always special and the reason why their rivalry is enduring. Everything is always left on the court.
But Pumaren had to spoil it.
Maybe La Salle should assess his coaching status. Remember that he’s the same guy who was in charge when the school was suspended for bringing in two ineligible players three years ago resulting in embarrassment and the return of a championship trophy.
Had his school been less protective, Pumaren, who claimed to be innocent and a non-participant in the scandal, should have been consigned to oblivion a long time ago.
But he’s still there, ruining his own reputation and that of La Salle’s.

I too went to DLSU and so I am partly green. I too am at a loss why the Green Archers snubbed the awarding ceremonies. No, I don’t blame the refs. I suspect the greater majority of La Sallites have the same attitude as mine: Pana-panahon lang yan! Bawi na lang next year!

i-bleed-blue,
You keep talking about integrity. What about the actions of the entire Ateneo community in the bonfire when the names of La Salle players were written on sticks and burned.
For this action, Fr. Nebres had to apologize.

The Green Mind:
Inspite of La Salle’s: (1) inane complaints about the officiating and baseless accusations against Ateneo with so-called scripts, (2) lack of sportsmanship - as evidenced by refusing to accept the runner-up trophy, (3) player flashing “the finger†on court, (4) yet another player, making the bang-bang hand gestures; and (4) students wearing shirts with a green X imposed on the Ateneo’s school seal…
I personally do not concur with the kindling incident as it just does not make sense to fight fire with fire - literally.
Nevertheless, I think it was a humbling experience for Mr. Paredes, an Ateneo Alumni (who wrote on the mock logs), to apologize for what he did in that supposed Ateneo-exclusive event via a letter to Fr. Ben.
But however we feel about the prudence of the bonfire kindling, I for one would like to be represented in Fr. Ben’s apology. We offended our La Salle brothers; Ateneans ought to apologize regardless of whether or not he thinks the act is justified.
If you call an ugly person ugly to his face, you should apologize regardless of whether the person is in fact ugly or not.
I admire true La Sallite gentlemen and ladies who do not agree with all the horrible acts of their school’s players and coach. (Sana dumami kayo.)
Fr. Nebres’ letter is an act of humility on behalf of the Ateneo Community. No apology from your school’s representatives in the numerous incident? O well… whatever floats your boat.
In the end, forgive me good sir, as I cannot help but compare Fr. Ben’s apology to Brother Armin’s silence, and contrast everything that has come out of F. Pumaren’s mouth and Mr. Paredes’ three-sentence apology letter.
Ang sarap maging Atenista.
Lemme end with a quote from the good book:
Proverbs 11:2
Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

@i-bleed blue
hey you forgot!
1.) cheat to win
2.) players punching, nambabatok
3.) supreme taunting
4.) claiming that their own players are selling games
all of these and what you’ve said (and im pretty sure there’s more) just to
regain stupid pride. YOU PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE DEFEAT IN A GOOD WAY. we ateneans use defeat to become stronger, unlike you. your whining will bring you nowhere. just like in the real world. hahahahahaha. thats an exaggeration of course.
hi nako ATAYDEDE, talo ka nanaman. pagnatalo, subukan mong bumangon. hindi yung panay reklamo.

Who cheered and wrote on banners: “Burn, Ateneo, Burn!!!” Who maliciously claimed: “It was scripted!” Who had their shirts printed with a big green X over the Ateneo’s school seal and had blue eagle hats pierced by a green arrow through it?
Right. Ateneans should not stoop down to their level, but then again, it’s funny to see DLRT fuming mad because they can’t handle what they dish out at us.
With all the sour-graping and complaining that we still hear, I can’t help but deduce:
DLSU - Winning at all costs.
Ateneo - Winning with class.
Nuff said.
