Mapua upsets San Beda, forges rubber match for finals

TWO DAYS after eliminating San Sebastian in a sudden-death playoff game, the Kelvin dela Peña-led Mapua Cardinals did the improbable last September 19 to live another day in the 84th NCAA men’s basketball tournament Final Four.
Dela Peña tallied 17 points as the Mapua Cardinals forced a rubber match by upsetting defending champion San Beda Red Lions, 53-51 win at the Pasay Astrdome.
“It is very surprising to beat them, said dela Peña, who was picked by the Alaska Aces of the Philippine Basketball Association in the second round of the Rookie Draft. “Defense is working as well as our offense too. But I’m sure San Beda will bounce back in next game.
The Cardinals, who last tasted an NCAA title in 1991, need to win their sudden-death matchup on Monday against the same Red Lions in order to crack the finals. They defeated the Stags, 63-54, last Wednesday to make it to the Final Four.
“We’re able to outjump them right at the very start. Because of that we took a 10-point lead. I am glad that even Sam Ekwe did not fare well in the first half. So we took advantage of that until the fourth period, said Mapua coach Leo Isaac.
Mapua converted 33.3 percent of its shots from three-point territory, compared to the measly 6.25 percent posted by San Beda.
“I told the boys before the game that if we can execute well our game plan, we will win. It was good also that Ian Mazo and Jonathan Banal scored better even from the three-point arc, said Isaac, who was a member of the Cardinal quintet that won the NCAA crown in 1981.
“Maybe, we have to rest tomorrow and go overtime on Sunday because I’m sure they’ll return. We need to be ready. But right now, I think the pressure is on San Beda and hopefully we are in a situation that they are not familiar with.
For the second straight game, Lions center Sam Ekwe tallied only four points on a dismal 2-of-9 shooting clip with 10 rebounds.
Mapua started the game on bright note as it took an 18-3 lead after Banal, dela Peña and Neil Pascual spearheaded a blistering 12-0 run.
San Beda’s Bam Gamalinda and JR Tecson, however, helped trim the deficit to nine points, 9-18, to end the first period.
Dela Peña helped sustain Mapua’s game when he drilled in three straight baskets, including a trey, to extend the Cardinal lead to 11 at the half.
A 12-2 run jumpstarted by Pong Escobal, though, allowed San Beda to move within two points, 34-36, with only 4:20 remaining in the third quarter. Isaac’s wards, though, responded with a barrage of triples, which sealed the win.
The Red Lions had a chance to steal the game in the dying seconds, but Escobal missed a potential game-winning triple at the buzzer.
Ian Mazo finished with 15 points and three assists, while Jonathan Banal added 10 markers.
The Cardinals threw a defensive blanket on the Red Lions, forcing them to commit 22 turnovers to counter a -19 rebounding disadvantage.
The scores:
Mapua 53 – Dela Peña 17, Mazo 15, Banal 10, N. Pascual 6, Mangahas 5, J. Pascual 0, Sarangay 0.
San Beda 51 – Menor 18, Hermida 14, Tecson 5, Escobal 4, Ekwe 4, Tanagas 4, Gamalinda 2, Tirona 0, Pascual 0, Marcelo 0.
Quarter scores: 18-9; 33-22; 45-38; 53-51

IYAK ANG LETRAN!
TANGGAL ang YABANG NYO!!
GaLing ng MAPUA!!! Sana Kayo Makalaban ng JRU sa Finals! pero Mahihirapan kayo sa San Beda..
Coach Leo Isaac was a very good, strategic type of coach and killing the reigning, defending, and back-to-back NCAA Champion San Beda Red Lions by their good and excellent motivation to the players of MIT.
MIT killed SBC by momentum stops of MIT, and draining the time by executing a good last second shot clock shots. It was amazing, and we saw that Sam Ekwe is no longer that dominant before!
Teams here at NCAA knows already the weakness of that Ekwelizer
congrats Mapua. One more game… please ipanalo nyo, we beg you. sa mga fellow Mapuans ko.. show some love, punta tayo sa monday. Im sure San Beda will make its adjustments and go balls out this monday. They arent the defending champions for nothing. Wag na kayo sa bahay manuod dun na sa Cuneta.. hahaha. Sana pumutok si Allan “The Snake” Mangahas!! KDP is really proving he belongs in the pro. Mazo and Banal please show up again on monday, please. Coach LEO, you are the best!! hahaha.

well with all due respect to the cardinal community, i still think that SBC will win on monday. they’re not the defending champions for nothing.
I Already Predicted that Mapua and JRu will win yesterday, and tomorrow Ateneo will win with a close match. Mapua and JRU will be in the finals. I forsee things and it did happen. Thank you.

was a good game… mapua did great.. but champions are not champions for nothing… see you on monday…
to all people who think that we only rely on sam ekwe… think again… if we only rely on him how come no team has ever beaten us with a doulble figure i guess 5 or 6 points na yung highest… mapua won by only two but ekwe scored only four… do the math please… we won to letran without sam ekwe to… he is still a dominant player but it’s just like this: what if mapua doesn’t have dela pena? jazul for letran? sena for hopia? it’s the same thing! stupid people!
ANIMO SAN BEEDA!!! we will win on monday!!! our journey and quest for glory does not end here!!!
on the other hand… if the finals will be hopia against the cardinals… GOODLUCK sa ratings!!! kawawa naman ch23!!! walang sponsors for sure walang ads and lugi na naman!!!

Good luck to the both teams on Monday! Honestly, I really don’t know which side to take. I like both teams! Kudos to the Bedans who gave their support to the Knights! Saludo ako sa inyo!

Nawala ang dream match-up ng NCAA na magandang combination for this year’s collegiate basketball.
Walang pambato ang NCAA sa UAAP this year dahil natalo ang Letran sa JRU. Walang SBC-CSJL and sana naman matalo na ang Mapua!

To the red Bedans,
Is there something wrong with Sam Ekwe? On a slide sya ah, going downhill!
Allright, napanuod ko lang yung final two minutes of the game, and Pong Escobal’s disgusting blunder, dapat kay Ogie Menor yung bola and no one else, but why was Ekwe held to such low output. Can anyone answer me?
nkpagbreak ung gf nya sa knya :’( na hurt si sam that day and nde makaconcentrate ..
