Ateneo completes elims sweep of DLSU in style

DEFENDING champion De La Salle University’s road to another title got off to a wrong start, thanks to its archrivals from Katipunan.
Ateneo de Manila, already assured of the top spot and the first twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four, played with a purpose and gave the Green Archers a sound beating, 65-57 to relegate its nemesis to a virtual best-of-three tiff against Far Eastern University in the Final Four of the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last September 6, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.
As a result, the Archers will have to take on the Tamaraws at least two more times if they are to secure their place in this year’s finals.
In front of nearly 22,200 fans, the Blue Eagles did not play like a squad content with their standing. Instead, they were relentless from the opening tip, racing to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter.
The Eagles managed to ground DLSU chief gunner JV Casio, who struggled all game and missed all but two of his 16 field goal attempts. The usually cool and steady guard failed to catch fire, due in part to a seemingly slippery pair of shoes and more so the stingy defense put up by coach Norman Black’s wards.
Ateneo continued to pummel the Green Archers in the third period, where it posted a game-high 15-point edge, 54-39, on back-to-back baskets by Eric Salamat inside the two-minute mark. Watching the Archers execute their offense seemed like an eye sore for the Green and White faithful.
However, DLSU coach Franz Pumaren, who returned from Iran after steering the Nokia Pilipinas Youth basketball team to a respectable 7th place in the FIBA Asia Junior Championships, begged to differ.
“Ateneo played good defense, no question about it,â€? said Pumaren. “It was a tight game until Ateneo tightened up its screws and we couldn’t find ways to crack that defense. But we’ll be back and we should concentrate now on our next game against FEU.â€?
Eagles slotman Rabeh Al-Hussaini shone once more, scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead his unit to a 13-1 elimination round record, the highest Ateneo has ever posted since notching the same slate in 1987.
“The game has no bearing for us but we wanted to win it for the Ateneo community. Our defense bailed us out in the end,” said Black, whose team will face the University of the East Red Warriors in the semis.
The Green Archers moved closer to 33-36 thanks to a Simon Atkins three-pointer. But Al-Hussaini and Nonoy Baclao joined forces to lead a Blue Eagle breakaway.
The last time La Salle threatened was at 57-62, after Rico Maierhofer banged in a trey. But Ateneo countered with Baclao scoring on an impressive undergoal stab off Maierhofer to extend the Eagles’ edge to 64-57, with 2:28 remaining.
Baclao contributed 11 markers, six boards and four blocks while Jai Reyes added 10 markers for the three-time UAAP champions.
Maierhofer was the lone bright spot for La Salle, chipping in 16 points and hauling down 10 rebounds.
The scores:
Ateneo 65 – Al-Hussaini 18, Baclao 11, Reyes 10, Tiu 9, Salamat 8, Baldos 4, Escueta 3, Buenafe 2, Austria 0, Burke 0, Salva 0.
De La Salle 57 – Maierhofer 16, Atkins 9, Barua 8, Malabes 7, Casio 5, Mangahas 4, Villanueva 4, Ferdinand 2, Walsham 2, Bagatsing 0, Revilla 0, Webb 0.
Quarter scores: 21-12; 36-28; 54-41; 65-57

HAY NAKU WAG NAMAN PAG FIESTAHAN ANG DLSU. TANGGAP NAMING TALO KAMI. CONGRATS ADMU.
It was a nice and clean game.. lasalle starters are just unlucky for the game. cant score at easy basket.. Ateneo’s defence won the game..
rabeh al-husseini MVP!!!
Congratulations to the Eagles. Defense is the most constant thing we can count on. Lets make sure we win it all this time.
Go Ateneo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bawi nlang LS next time.
the way La Salle played was below a champ’s caliber..
JV Casio can’t even make a decent shot..
I guess we all know now where the name MVP for these season would belong, in the blue and white camp…
The way La Salle played i doubt they won’t even make it in the finals and even though they would with that kind of game they played today- Ateneo would crush them to the ground as if they never ever stepped on this earth.
lasalle LOSERS!!!!
@da boss
There’s a girl who called herself Silva, Atenista daw sya at parents nya, pero hindi sila nanonood basketbol. well, a true Atenista never have to brag about being an Atenista. by the way, i’m not Atenista. hehe.
If not for that FEU loss, Ateneo could have swept, and this would have been a very rare occassion where the elims where swept by a team…pero ok lang, para maganda ang mga laban!!!
arrianne,
ELhy
natalo na nga… hehe
tama na…
hahaha tama…
go FEU..
@ Katipunan’s Pride, yeah we had a really off game. No excuses even if coach franz just got back the previous night… The officiating was terrible for both teams as we both know too. BTW, We will make the finals. I guarantee it. Heck, even the gambling syndicate is desperate for it. GOLDMINE. lol. Pero i think we have the psychological edge to win because of experience in the finals. i mean, been there done that… We’ve won where we’ve had to.
Winning when it matters? Dont you think the game yesterday mattered? ahahhahahaha
watched it.(big dome)
someone threw a bottle of mineral water.ewan ko kung san galing. :P HAHA!
anyways.it was a good game.
IT was so cool!may mga bta pa clang sinama!
there was a mascot!CUTE!
but,my dad told me na dati,NILALABAS pa nila ung philippine eagle during the game(patay na ata ung eagle sa grade school):P
nakakainis ung mga ALUMNI ang ingay!HAHA!
anonymous,
…”someone threw a bottle of mineral water.ewan ko kung san galing. :P HAHA!…”
The bottle of mineral water was thrown from the ateneo side and landed a few feet from the La Salle coaching staff during the halftime break while the La Salle team was waiting to leave the court for the locker room. Does this fact still make you happy?
at Elle, yesterday was as important for us. I’ll say it again, see yah in the Finals. oh and UE will give you a BIG FIGHT. Isnt that what you guys want anyway??
To all UAAP fans,
To all the great Alumnis,
To all the sports lovers,
To all the students and colleagues,
To all the well wishers and sorry losers,
To all the sympathizers and criticizers,
Let UAAP basketball be a token for unity, friendship, fellowship among schools, and not hostility, arrogance, antogonism.
I’m atenean and I agree with flyleaf that the officiating was damn bad. The game could have been much more fair for both side kung di lang sana palpak mga refs. Remember the foul on casio when he ran back to the bench, and the super funny and weird foul on Austria. sobrang sablay nila.
JV won’t get the MVP na talaga. it’s just one of the ateneans. si jervy hindi na pwede eh,,, hindi kasi nakaabot ng final four ang uste,
well, officiating is really bad if even the winning team (or fans) complain about it.
wtf was up with that one big fight lasalle poster? bangag ba yun?
and the bbb soundly beat their counterparts. that drumline was off the hook. i hope nanood and ue at adamson. that’s how it is done boys and girls.
Anyway, Casio struggled a lot.
To everyone. I just want to ask. What will happen next? I understand that LaSalle and FEU will play for best of three but I just want to know, yung winner ba dun will take the second spot and grabs the twice to beat advantage tas yung loser will be on the third spot.
or whoever loses the game will be eliminated and yung 3 remaining nalang yung maglalaban? Thanks. I hope you don’t mind answering my question. :)) Well, best of luck to all. :)
La Salle didn’t look like they were the champions. That was definitely a below-par performance on their part yesterday. Casio, their so-called “go-to guy”, didn’t look like an MVP material and most importantly, he wasn’t able to save our butts this time like what he would usually do in La Salle’s games. I hope La Salle gets back to their “championship” form in the last games.
Animo!
it was a good game…
what if la salle is at its top form yesterday?
ewan, basta finals sana ateneo vs la salle.. malabo na pumasok mga “baroka” shots ni barroca against la salle, saka mas intense ang la salle ngaun kc they want to get their hands on ateneo.. ^.~
casio benta solid, nag ala mike cortez
i rather want to c ADMU, UE or FEU winning the championship except LASALLE they DONT deserve it.
@.
I’m from ateneo pero I don’t like what you’re trying to point out, kahit against yan sa rival namin. dun ka sa ibang forum magpost. show some decency.
why does everyone think Casio made benta? You can see he was being guarded well… He just could not execute either and he was also malas at some points.
At “.”, Bakit? jealous ka lang yata na lagi kaming champions no? 5 titles in the last 10 years. You telling me we cheated in all those wins??? E even man ateneans think that cortez sold that game 3 in 2002. No one is clean bro. Just ask NABRO that. hahah
Correction
*Even many Ateneans think that*
OOPS. In other words I agree with Glorfindel
@yeo the man
oo nga. bakit may nag-iisip na benta si Casio? he’s too good a player para bilhin. (and i say this not only because of his respectable and technically fearsome capabilities but also because of his integrity as player). Many in Ateneo have great respect for him, including me.
@glorfindel and yeo the man
you know how lasallites act when they lose, they come up with EXCUSES to glorify their school.
Gosh Lasalle, you were up against us, the top team in the league. Coming into the game, it was no 50-50!
Casio DID NOT SELL HIS GAME. ANG BABA NAMAN NG TINGIN ng mga lasalista kay casio kung gayon. napaka obvious naman na concentrated yung D sa kanya. may gosh, he’s your MVP. like duh! you have to stop that guy from producing. and apparently ateneo did a good job of stopping him! everytime he went to the basket, ipit lagi. his team couldn’t also make an open shot for him!
moreover, lagi siyang stepback jumper buhakaw kasi hindi nya mapasa ng maayos ang bola. step back jumpers are ineffective most of the time!
i’m not from ateneo or la salle… but i’m a huge fan of the dlsu ever since i started watching uaap…
i was anticipating that game…unfortunately, luck favored the eagles…
as i was watching casio struggling in terms of shooting, i was really frustrated…to the point that i was thinking that there could be game fixing or whatesoever! “how much was given to him?”…i wanted him out of the playing court… just stay in the bench and reflect…hehe…
but at least, despite his performance, 8 pts.lang ung lamang… (i put lang because considering the defensive play of the eagles and the worst performance of casio, the archers are still able to cut down the lead to a single digit! at least)
and it was nice seeing atkins hitting 2s and 3s! he’s good in defending an opponent but not good when it comes to shooting…but now he’s starting to show the world what he can do…when he hits a basket, he would instantly get into the rhythm, and will continue to hit baskets! :) with LA and atkins, i can still see a bright future for la salle…hehe
i’m hoping that la salle will beat feu this thursday!!! i want an ATENEO-LA SALLE in the finals…:) this is the most fun to watch in UAAP (tied with the cheerdance competition:)!!!)
@athena
yung game kahapon talo pa ang finals kaya gusto namin DLSU vs. ADMU finals para masaya.
@arrianne
:)
@athena
An1mo!
@yeo the man
sa lasalle lumabas yang balitang nagbenta si cortez not from ateneo.
@yeo the man
@yeo the man
nakaka inggit ba eskwelahan nyo, e di nga ma explain ng mga players nyo yun courses nila eh, tagalog na nga lang sabihin sinagot “basta mahirap”, kakaingit ba?
SUS…!!!

@ arrianne
again, i’m not from lasalle…pero animo lasalle! :)
@nabro:
thank you for sharing that video. i found it entertaining and rather unsettling at the same time.
to la sallites, have you seen this video? it’s cito beltran’s interview with your 2004 basketball varsity team. i must be honest. it highlights a not-so-flattering side of your players (and that’s putting things nicely.) i am severely tempted to ridicule your players, and perhaps even your school for _______.
(okay, i don’t want to get into a spat so i won’t finish that last sentence. check this out http://jobar14.multiply.com/video/item/1 to fill in the blank yourself. unless you’re hopelessly deluded, you’ll easily get what i’m driving at. )
its really entertaining just seeing rival sculs fyt! hehe…
@Athena
indeed. =) peace.
naiinis aq ky baclao feeling jc intal akala mo sbrang gling ang yabang nka 3points lng e..
@ pangit
i don’t know what to relpy…i’m bored. so hehe na lng reply ko!
let there be peace! :)
don’t you want to change ur name? its a little bit annoying!
@ uenianbedanletranite
anong ginawa ni baclao? players have the tendency to be “mayabang” pag nakashoot especially if its a big one!!! nakakaboost un ng confidence nila eh!!! :)
mukang isip bata c baclao.. naiinis aq s knya
i’ve thought of a number of names, lahat pangit. so, to give life to all those names…. =)
