NCAA Rocky Road to the Playoffs

With the JRU Heavy Bombers winning its PCU assignment, the September 3, 2008 billing will probably be the 38th parallel that will separate some and will leave some room for the rest of the pack to make way to their seats towards the Final 4.

If San Beda and Mapua win their respective bouts on September 3, that would mean the Red Lions in solo 1st place thus gaining twice to beat advantage while the Cardinals will live and fight another day.

If San Sebastian wins, and Perpetual Help would like to play spoiler with PCU being the other, the Golden Stags will claim the top spot, San Beda will place 2nd and the Cardinals will make its final stand on September 5 against the Heavy Bombers for at least a playoff for the 4th spot and hope that either JRU or Letran would slip and forget that they still have some remaining games to play.

On September 5, if the Heavy Bombers and Letran come to play and win, the Heavy Bombers will be in 2nd place if San Sebastian loses to San Beda on September 3.  In that case, if Letran wins, the Knights and the Golden Stags will be tied at 9-4.

If San Beda loses its encounter with San Sebastian while Mapua and PCU suddenly played like they have nothing to lose but their wallets, suddenly you have a tie for 1st (San Beda) and 2nd (San Sebatian) place and 3rd (JRU) and 4th (Mapua) place at 9-4 and 9-5 with Letran walking on a tight rope at 5th.

On the final day of eliminations, if JRU, currently at 9-4, prevail over Mapua in their  September 5 match, Letran hurdles its PCU undertaking,  JRU will be at 10-4 and Letran will be at 9-5 which means the final slot of the semis and bye-bye to the Cardinals.

San Beda will be untouchable at 1st place if it sweeps its remaining games.  If the Red Lions split their remaining elimination matches, that would mean a dispute for the top spot and positioning for whoever would take on the No. 3 and  No. 4 seed in the semis.  If the Red Lions should lose both games, they might drop to 4th place depending on how the other contenders perform.

So there you have it,  it’s not yet over for all of them.  Until they hit the right number, anything can still happen.  A possibility of endless playoff litany looming in the oldest collegiate basketball league in the country.  This might mean that UAAP will finish ahead of the NCAA even if it opened a week early.  And what a change.

Is it a good thing, for the fans, absolutely.  The NCAA has been exciting as ever.  But don’t tell that to the players and coaches, for sure, they would want to end this long and laborious season. In a high note of course.

    @ dugong mapuan

    i agree. ang kulet ng standing pag natalo ang letran sa wednesday. hahaha. sakin, ok lang na matalo na beda para sure na twice to beat na ng SBC at CSJL at para narin mas malaki yung chance na sila ulit maglaban sa finals. pero malay natin, pag natalo nga sila. your team might end up sa 2nd place or kung sino man. hahaha. ang kulet talaga.

    pag talo ang letran sa sbc on wed malamang
    mapua vs ssc-r for #2 winner having a twice to beat incentive.
    letran vs jru winner will be #4 to face san beda in the f4

    if the win of the red lions against the stags last wednesday is a portent of things to come, am a bit worried of the red lions. First coach lim has limited coaching abilities or in the vernacular “diskarte”. second– the game against the stags showed that the red lions can be beaten. third–the killer instinct is gone.
    maybe we are resting on our laurels considering our two peat. hope that we can still salvage and win the crown.
    advice— pls change coach frankie next year. this year clearly showed his inadequacies as a coach.

    KUNG MANALO LETRAN ON WED, THE KNIGHTS WILL HAVE A TWICE TO BEAT ADVANTAGE WITH SAN BEDA. THEREFORE IT WILL LEAVE SSCR, MIT AND JRU TO DISPUTE THE LAST TWO F4 SEATS. THUS THE QUOTIENT OF THE THREE TEAMS WOULD BE:

    SSCR = +4
    MIT = -1
    JRU = -3
    TAMA PO BA MANCOM?

    cguradong magiging mainit ang laban sa wednesday…the players will surely do their best para manalo kami sa wednesday kasi pag natalo kami, delikado pa sa F4 slot…hehehe…im hoping we’ll win para sure na sa twice to beat advantage…cgurado din na very physical ang magiging game sa wednesday pero sana kahit gaano ka-physical, walang mangyayaring gulo and walang magkakapikunan…with regards sa game kahapon, congrats din sa mga kapitbahay namin, salamat at TINAMBAKAN nyo ang HOPIA VENDORS…
    goodluck sa mga players ng both teams sa wednesday…

    –my final four–
    sbc
    letran
    mapua
    ssc-r

    –NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER GIVE IN–

    kung mananalo letran ng mas mataas sa 4pts eto f4
    1 LC
    2 SBC
    3 SSC
    4 MIT

    kung lower than 3pts
    1 SBC
    2 LC
    3 SSC
    4 MIT

    kung matatalo LC
    1 SBC
    2 MIT
    3 SSC
    4 LC

    yan poh yung mga scenario
    matatangal talaga JRU kung quotient ang pagbabasihan

    @insane… kung marami ang tie, ndi na applicable ang quotient system… playoff na ang magiging labanan nyan… saka ill be straight, malabo manalo letran sa san beda sa wed… from the performances they showed this second round malabo talaga… pero ndi ka pa din inaalis ang chances na matatalo ang san beda sa wednesday against letran… from my opinion, 30% lang ang chances na mananalo ang letran sa san beda… kasi mismatch talaga… iba pa din ang difference ng may big guy sa loob ng shaded area to guard sam ekwe… just my opinion lang naman… pax
