NCAA Rocky Road to the Playoffs

With the JRU Heavy Bombers winning its PCU assignment, the September 3, 2008 billing will probably be the 38th parallel that will separate some and will leave some room for the rest of the pack to make way to their seats towards the Final 4.
If San Beda and Mapua win their respective bouts on September 3, that would mean the Red Lions in solo 1st place thus gaining twice to beat advantage while the Cardinals will live and fight another day.
If San Sebastian wins, and Perpetual Help would like to play spoiler with PCU being the other, the Golden Stags will claim the top spot, San Beda will place 2nd and the Cardinals will make its final stand on September 5 against the Heavy Bombers for at least a playoff for the 4th spot and hope that either JRU or Letran would slip and forget that they still have some remaining games to play.
On September 5, if the Heavy Bombers and Letran come to play and win, the Heavy Bombers will be in 2nd place if San Sebastian loses to San Beda on September 3. In that case, if Letran wins, the Knights and the Golden Stags will be tied at 9-4.
If San Beda loses its encounter with San Sebastian while Mapua and PCU suddenly played like they have nothing to lose but their wallets, suddenly you have a tie for 1st (San Beda) and 2nd (San Sebatian) place and 3rd (JRU) and 4th (Mapua) place at 9-4 and 9-5 with Letran walking on a tight rope at 5th.
On the final day of eliminations, if JRU, currently at 9-4, prevail over Mapua in their September 5 match, Letran hurdles its PCU undertaking, JRU will be at 10-4 and Letran will be at 9-5 which means the final slot of the semis and bye-bye to the Cardinals.
San Beda will be untouchable at 1st place if it sweeps its remaining games. If the Red Lions split their remaining elimination matches, that would mean a dispute for the top spot and positioning for whoever would take on the No. 3 and No. 4 seed in the semis. If the Red Lions should lose both games, they might drop to 4th place depending on how the other contenders perform.
So there you have it, it’s not yet over for all of them. Until they hit the right number, anything can still happen. A possibility of endless playoff litany looming in the oldest collegiate basketball league in the country. This might mean that UAAP will finish ahead of the NCAA even if it opened a week early. And what a change.
Is it a good thing, for the fans, absolutely. The NCAA has been exciting as ever. But don’t tell that to the players and coaches, for sure, they would want to end this long and laborious season. In a high note of course.

wow wow wow.
that’s the best word i can say. this year’s NCAA is just full of thrill. expect an intense final four. SCHOOL PRIDE is on the highest level and with that matter on the game, no one is considered underdogs.
Animo San Beda!
Long Live NCAA!
NCAA is now more Exciting than the UAAP, can’t wait who will go for the gold.

@nicksy
If NCAA is more exciting then why does the UAAP attract waaaaay more money?
Don’t say UAAP is overrated, it’s just that people looks up at the UAAP as the premier collegiate league. This is self-explanatory.
ah ok cge2 sabi mo po :)
@ andycapp
1. San Beda Red Lions
2. Letran Knights
3. San Sebastian Stags
4. Mapua Cardinals
JRU, where are you? hahaha.
Animo San Beda!
@loyola
“NCAA is NOW more Exciting than the UAAP, can’t wait who will go for the gold.”
pls read my comment properly, hehehehe,
your very very Defensive, and that’s very funny coming from a Self-Proclaimed UAAP School.
Animo San Beda!
Long Live NCAA!
NCAA has never been exciting and it will stay as it is, boring… UAAP is the primier league, produces well rounded players, and even attracts NCAA fans and players to watch the game.. Hope to see EKWE or ESCOBAL or MENOR in Areneta… hahah!
@ Katipunan’s Pride!
ok. so NCAA is boring? how about this, UAAP as stealers. c’mon man. a lot of players from the UAAP (not just the players of today but including the past) came from the NCAA. maybe you’ll say as your defense, “the UAAP is the premier league that’s why they keep on transferring.” c’mon boy, why can’t you rely on your home-grown athletes? POOR UAAP!
@ bedista bomb:
i can’t blame the players at the end of the day they are the ones who choose which school could give them the prestige and spotlight.. Even the players know what’s best for them…
@the-bedista-bomb
Go Dela Peña. step-up man.
VIVA MAPUA!
ANIMO SAN BEDA!
so i guess that would be POOR NCAA
@ CHIEF WAKA-WAKA
no doubt ATENEO is better than san beda! that’s why Buenafe choose to be in the camp of blue and white..
Still One Big Fight on thr 6th!!!
@ Katipunan’s Pride!
“no doubt ATENEO is better than san beda! that’s why Buenafe choose to be in the camp of blue and white..”
so why does San Beda beat ateneo 2 times this year?
and yes. it’s the player’s choice. but who’s making the first move? alam mo ba ang transaction ng mga UAAP schools sa mga juniors ng NCAA na may potential? high school pa lang, di pa graduate, inoofferan na. so do you think that if there’s no offer, there would still be transferring of players? i don’t think so boy. that just show the real UAAP. mostly relying on NCAA.
ah Ok… wish mo lang yun nga maging final 4.
san ba dapat matauhan ang JRU?
@ congratz
Mabuhay rizal!!__
Ogie, Pong, Borgie is there. siguro pag nakita mong lumipad si superman next season, mas lalo kang mainis sa beda. hahaha. be ready. superman’s on the rise. watch his game on FMC. he’s so dominant!
Animo San Beda!
I thought this article is about the NCAA, pertaining only to NCAA and focuses only to NCAA, and the article only tackle UAAP when it said that it might finish first than NCAA, so I wonder why SOME UAAP fans barging with Defensive comments about who is the better league(well this is a public forum). I’m an NCAA fan but and also an UAAP observer, but arguing who is the better one is a very subjective matter. and when I said that NCAA is NOW more Exciting than the UAAP, it is only an opinionated comment.
Animo San Beda!
UAAP is the best! wow huh yabang naman ng bedistang to! e tambak naman team nyo sa UE nung flying V harharhar. 22o naman diba? lumalakas kayo dahil sa import.
@chief waka waka
ryan buenafe said it himself in an interview, “sobrang daming gustong makapasok sa team.” so what kung both my MVP? saan kaya mas nagiinvest si MVP? Diba Ateneo?
@bedista bomb
@ loyola
ok. it’s vince and kirk. but how many of your players can you call a home-grown talent?
salamat – san sebastian
buenafe – san sebastian
salva – san beda
escueta – san beda
rabeh – pcu
kirk – faith academy
vince – faith academy
chua – chang kai
tiu – xavier
jobe – san sebastian
yan lang. di ko alam san galing yung iba eh. boy. wala ba kayong home-grown talent dyan? last year, center nio si arao. san galing yun? san beda nanaman. hai nako buhay.
@ loyola
pati pala si baldos galing ng san beda. hai. team of transferee. hahaha.
@the-bedista-bomb
tol it is “Chang Kai Shek” po hindi “Chang Kai” lang, hehehe, peace.
cant it be final 5? ;p
Beda w/o Ekwe vs JRU present Roster
MABUHAY RIZAL!
Mapua will play against UPHDS on Wednesday. So for sure they will work hard. Pagdating ng friday “They are back” against the Heavies at siguradong pagod ang Cardinals sa Friday. So definitely JRU will win on friday.
@loyola – correction, San beda reached the Final 4 in 2004 season but loses to UPHDS, San beda’s rosters: Bombeo, Hudencial, Paterno, Aljamal, Cordero and Angeles coach Nash Racela…
”
correction, San beda reached the Final 4 in 2004 season but loses to UPHDS, San beda’s rosters: Bombeo, Hudencial, Paterno, Aljamal, Cordero and Angeles coach Nash Racela…
letran, jru, and mit want sbc to win over ssc-r to bolster their chances for a FF and even a twice to beat advantage positioning. a baste win will complicate matters as it will result in open season for the first 4 places. a baste win puts at risk sbc’s twice to beat advantage. a loss to a rvenge seeking letran will put sbc in 3rd to 4th spot. so the game tomorrow is crucial not only for baste, beda but for all of the top 5 teams. don’t count out perps as their ot win vs csb will make them come out strong. besides mit usually lets their guard down after beating one of the biggies. also, don’t count out pcu as daa may not play on friday. pagnatalo ang beda bukas, magkakagulo at labu-labu na ang placings at positioning sa ncaa
For me, NCAA is still the best league, simply because they have their own style. By next season, watch-out for the new talents of each teams (i.e., another Nigger for the Heavy Bombers and a Superman for the Red Lions).
Whatever happens (they may lose or they may win), the Bombers would still in the final four slots at mag-ingat kayo baka matsyambahan kayo nila because this is what they are always saying by some of the idiots here.
only an idiot would sy that JRU is not a contender. if they beat MIT, they may get one of the twice to beat advantage position. the bombers are VERY HUNGRY as they have not tasted a championship since the time of Philip Cezar (anyone still rememeber him). this is why if they reach the finals, i expect an atom abomb to explode and when the smoke clears, sila ang champions.
@the -bedista-bomb,
When Ekwe transferred to SBC, he did so not because he wanted to play basketball. In fact, football ang laro niya. Dito lang siya natuto magbaskeball. It just so happens that the guy is very athletic and he picked up on the game soon enough.
As for Burke and Long, these guys have been playing basketball practically all their lives. They were scouted and transferred to Ateneo with basketball in mind. If they turned out to be less dominant, well, problema na ng Ateneo yun. Kukuha lang ng import bano pa!
mental colony kasi, akala pag import magaling – we should adopt the filipino first policy in ncaa and uaap. it’s not a matter of winning games, but giving educational opportunities to deserving players.
DarkKnight was correct in pointing out that the NCAA has its own style. For one, the play is more physical. Two, the overwhelming majority of the players in each team are homegrown and have remained to play for nothing more than school pride.
Unlike in the UAAP where most players go for the exposure and the perks with the goal of pursuing a professional playing career. Nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, dahil mas “personalan” ang labanan sa NCAA, the players and the crowd are also more prone to violence.
In terms of audience share, natural lang na mas maraming manood ng UAAP than NCAA. In terms of student population na lang, the average NCAA college only has 5,000 students. Mapua na ang pinakamalaki with around 10,000. Compare this with the average UAAP university with 12-15,0000 students. UE and FEU nga 20-30,000 students pa.
But in fairness to the NCAA, the league did not just roll over and die when Ateneo and La Salle left. Schools like San Beda and Letran have repeatedly proven that they can still pack the crowds because the have a fan base who are just as loyal. Same with Mapua (before the Malayan issue came in) and Baste. Why? Because just like in the case of Ateneo and La Salle, school loyalty and pride have been fostered in these schools for decades!
Eh ang UAAP? Let’s face it. Before Ateneo and La Salle joined that league, wala namang nanonood nyan sa totoo lang.
To the point where pati mga cheers ng ibang NCAA schools ginagaya.
(Lintek! Magsayaw na lang kasi.)
