La Salle Nips Adamson, UE Escapes UST Rally!

Adamson University almost salvaged a certain degree of pride when it played De La Salle University to the limit in their game today.  The Green Archers had to dig deep to get an 84 – 79 overtime win.
La Salle played anemic on both ends of the court while Adamson played like a well-oiled machine.

The Falcons were able to shackle JV Casio almost throughout the game and no one really stepped up to take over the scoring chores.  Coach Leo Austria put a big man to guard Casio and that move almost spelled doomsday for La Salle.

Adamson’s Gonzalgo just lit up the scoreboards with timely threes to keep Adamson close all the way.  La Salle on the other hand was playing not to lose and just went through the motions, thinking that Adamson would probably just lie down and give them the game.  Well, they thought wrong.

Not only did La Salle play like they had nothing to lose (which they did), they even committed such inane mistakes like Rico Maierhofer’s hanging on the rim.  That cost them a technical foul that gave the Falcons 2 free throws and possession.  It was a mistake that not even a rookie would make.

As usual, the La Salle free throws were just absolutely horrible.   I can’t understand how players who have been in the league for a few years are still so inconsistent from the line.  Shooting free throws should be instinctive.  In La Salle’s case, you can see that the players look like they have no confidence when they take the free throws.  Only JV Casio and Maui Villanueva have the confidence to shoot from the line.

It had to take rookies Maui Villanueva and LA Revilla to step up in the overtime period to give La Salle the win.  I am now officially a big fan of these 2 rookies.  Maui is the most fundamentally sound player that I have seen in a long time and this will take him a long way.  He is a hard worker and will only get better as each year passes.
LA Revilla is the 2nd coming of Tonyboy Espinosa.  In fact he is an improved version.  He will take over the role that JV Casio presently has.  Revilla has the touch and the guts to mix it up regardless of his diminutive size.
It was a sorry loss for Adamson Coach Leo Austria.  It did not help that the officiating was again very spotty.  Late in regulation, a travelling foul was called on Agustin who was very clearly not travelling.  Coach Austria went ballistic and was slapped a technical.   What can coaches do when officiating is as bad as it was today?
The referees should be heavily reprimanded for the way they called this game.  My colleagues and I already sound like a broken record in our dismay about the officiating.  Today was a clear example of how the referees contributed heavily to the loss of a team that played very well.

The problem is that the Commissioner Almighty will do nothing again.  This emboldens the referees to continue calling the game in an inferior manner without any fear of repercussions.

In the 2nd game UST bowed out of the Final Four race as they lost to UE 89 - 87 in a very physical match.  The Growling Tigers made a torrid run after being down by 22 points in the beginning of the 4th quarter.
UST was still down by 15 when Coach Pido Jarencio got thrown out for rushing into the court after a non-call.

Jarencio could not contain himself anymore after the referees continuously made bad calls and non-calls.  At least Coach Pido had the balls to confront the referees.   I won’t be surprised if the Commissioner suspends Coach Pido and does nothing about the officiating.

The Tigers scored 35 points in the 4th quarter, the most by any team this season.  UST still had a chance to win it in the last seconds of the game, but the 3 pointers just wouldn’t connect.

So now the Final Four is set.  Ateneo will be playing UE while La Salle will be playing FEU. The only thing that needs to be determined is who between La Salle and FEU will get the other twice to beat advantage.

FEU plays UE on Thursday while La Salle plays Ateneo on Saturday.  A win or  loss by both FEU and La Salle will mean a playoff game.    A win by one and a loss by the other will secure 2nd place for the winning team.
With the way FEU played against UP, La Salle played against Adamson and the almost collapse of UE today, Ateneo seems to be the only team that is on upward trend.

On to the Final Four!

    oh. i dont believe he really flops actually. what he does is he exaggerates a little when he gets hit, but he really does get hit mind you. he’s just good at showing it even more to get fouls which i think is pretty smart. lotsa good players do that too, but flopping a la varejao, or manu is still way far from him! haha

    @ sixthman, no not really. I dont mind him being involved in showbiz. Simon atkins is also part of that too. Its just that Tiu is always complaining for a call (in fact many say he would have led the league in calls complained)… He thinks that he can get away with flopping/acting. (thats why he was named “Best Actor for the season” in the other article.).. Although he is a very very smart and good player. But i dont like him because of his acting and bitching.

    how did tiu ever become full of himself? haha hes never trash talked an opponent in the games and he only raises his fist oh so often when he makes the big shot and clearly when he made that ue three evryone was going wild and he told them all to calm down. humble he is. a good leader too. maybe ur just saying that cause now hes super popular with the showbiz stuff too i guess.

    i agree, tiu is full of himself. mas gusto kong mvp si jv casio, magaling talaga sya pero humble pa rin. hindi mo makikitaan ng yabang kapag nakakashoot sya, unlike the players of UE, isang shoot lang, akala mo panalo na agad. naiinis talaga ako kapag nakikita ko yung ginagawa ng players ng UE kapag nakakashhot sila (waving their uniform), napakayabang ng dating.

    @green mind

    waaaaiiiitt… of course the media experts who will vote would consider the depth of the team. You could only imagine, what if Ateneo, didn’t have an Eric Salamat? Siba Chris may average around 20 a game? So… they’ll consider that. Plus, Tiu has good stats. lamang si Tiu kay JV in terms of rebs, blocks and turnovers, and konti lang nilamang ni JV sa iba. Tiu has also shown how a clutch player he is! Bonus yun! Kaya the 50% media voting will really go to him. And obviously, he is still the reason why Ateneo is on top.

    yup jv for mvp! his teammates are weaker. but we’ll see. if he kicks ateneo’s butt on saturday then hands down id give it to him! cruz doesnt deserve the mvp. his team talentwise is actually way stronger than la salle or ue’s team on paper. jervy, allera, ababou canlas and mirza. thats a pretty scary five out there and they have really underachieved. sad to say but the coach should take the blame for this season.

    Tiu wont be MVP… Casio or Hussaini or Cruz. The problem is, the UAAP relies too much on stats at times. Cmon, why did Bono win MVP? sana Intal nalang or something (season 69). Or why did Yap win in 2003? shoulda been santos, or alvarez…. h

    I would choose JV Casio for MVP. The reason being that the supporting players of La Salle is not as powerful as the supporting players of Ateneo. JV does it all and more.

    i just think that an mvp should at LEAST lead his team to the final four. you are the most valuable player in the league yet your team is eliminated… now that wouldn’t make sense to me! anyway, as for the mvp id go with jv or chris! raba gets all his openings because the defense has been sucked up to tiu. and if you noticed something, at times raba is playing simply for stats, classic example would be the NU game. he was benched in the first half because of foul trouble and the moment he re-enters the game sa third quarter, he forces up a shot when baclao is wide open sa freethrow line.. and he gets scolded by coach norman for that. and you can clearly see that now he is going for the rebounds compared to the start of the season when there’d be games na four rebounds lang or 6.. stuff like that, but as long as its working for ateneo then there is no problem there! as for tiu and casio, they do watever it takes for their team to win, whether picking up charges, rebounding at times, guarding the top scoring option of the opponent and taking the big shots. i don’t see dlsu going to rico for the last shot of the game, its always jv (since last year even when tang and villanueva were there) and i dont see admu going to raba for the last shot of the game either, well except for the FEU game wherein he had his monster game but missed when it really mattered, that game is their only loss too btw. haha its always tiu too and it has been that way since last year. but its true, tiu needs raba and jv needs rico. cant we just give it to both of them? :D tiu-casio for mvp! tie! haha

    @grass is green,

    yeah, a break and green support is what coach jack need. he won games for la salle against veteran coaches pido and leo. he can stand up against veteran coaches. even coach pido had lapses.

    the pressure is really tremendous as a substitute for the winingest coach in the uaap.
