San Sebastian tops CSB for eighth consecutive victory

SAN SEBASTIAN College-Recoletos tied Jose Rizal University’s season-high eight-game winning streak last August 29, 2008 after pouncing on also-rans College of Saint Benilde, 58-51, in the 84th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Pasay Astrodome.

With the win, the Stags strengthened their bid for a twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four as they improved their record to 9-4 moved to second place behind defending champion San Beda College (9-3).

“At least, we still have a shot at the top two. Our journey does not end here with this win, said Stags mentor Jorge Gallent. “We still need to win our last game against San Beda if we want to get a twice-to-beat edge.

Forward Froilan Saquillo led the Stags with 11 points to go along with four rebounds and two blocks, while Mark Bringas and Jonathan Semira tallied nine and eight points, respectively, to pull down the Blazers’ mark to 4-9.

“It’s a must win for us, said Saquillo. “The Blazers played very physical today but I’m happy that we were able to match their game. We are now looking forward to a very physical game when we face San Beda.

Saquillo had six points in the first quarter, which saw both teams struggling on the offensive end. The Stags’ impressive passing, though, earned them a 13-6 spread going into the second quarter.

Despite a sub-par performance from leading-scorer Jim Viray, Bringas’ eight second quarter points were enough to give the Recto outfit a 16-point halftime lead.

Although they were outscored in the last two quarters (19-21 and 9-14), the Stags’ defense was more than enough to stave off the Blazers, who trimmed the lead to as low as five in the latter part of the final period.

Jason Ballesteros tallied six points and nabbed 12 rebounds and blocked two enemy shots for the Stags, while point guard Pamboy Raymundo totaled seven markers.

Garry Sevilla led the Blazers with 14 points.

San Sebastian outrebounded CSB, 45-40, and had eight more assists (18-10) than its opponents.

The scores:

San Sebastian 58 – Saquillo 11, Bringas 9, Semira 8, Raymundo 7, Ballesteros 6, Aquino 4, Viray 4, Maconocido 3, Zulueta 3, del Rio 2, Bulawan 1, Delgado 0.

St. Benilde 51 – Sevilla 14, Johnston 8, Morial 6, Abolucion 6, Dalanon 5, Montecastro 5, Posadas 3, David 2, Manlapaz 2, Martinez 0, de la Paz 0, Mañalac 0, Umlas 0.

Quarter scores: 13-6; 30-16; 49-37; 58-51

I think so as aljamal was still able to play during the championship game against letran except that he was suspended by mancom for not asking permission in joining the pba. Though it was all over the newspapers.

by the way, there is no trending in basketball. each game is independent from the previous game. recall your statistics 101. as has been shown in this season’s games, a team may win one and lose one. thinking otherwise is pampalakas ng loob. for those people, deep down inside may kaba na matatalo. ang dami dito niyan, nag papalakas ng loob.

we’ll see tomorrow if baste will be different from csjl and jru by beating sbc. my gut feel is that in that in the elimination round beda will continue to be the streak breaker. but in the finals, whichever team they fight, may tulog sila - gutom na gutom ang bombers, gaganti ang knights, at sinisuwerte ang stags. especially jru and the stags, they have really stepped up and have strong teams while csjl relies mostly on teamwork.

Baste, rizal, letran parepareho lang mga yan. Haven’t you noticed that when these teams play against san beda the second time around, they lose by big margins. Look what happened to the finals last season - Game 1 close fight, game 2 - wala na letran. 1st round jru beat san beda by 5, second round sibak si rizal end ng winning streak. Ano naman ang kaibahan ng baste? Kayo na ang humusga bayan.
