Stags defuse Heavy Bombers for seventh straight win

SAN SEBASTIAN COLLEGE-Recoletos reran its first round encounter against Jose Rizal University to perfection.

The Stags launched yet another comeback and thwarted their opponents’ own attempt in the endgame to carve out a 52-47 victory – their seventh in a row – in the 84th NCAA men’s basketball tournament last August 27, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.

Despite not having any players score in double-digits, San Sebastian managed to quell a late Jose Rizal uprising with second-stringers Gilbert Bulawan and Froilan Saquillo leading the Stags’ assault, and in the process helping their squad tie the Heavy Bombers for the number 3 spot at 8-4 with two games to spare.

The Heavy Bombers dropped a blazing 7-0 blast capped by swingman John Wilson’s five points to come within a solitary point with 1:43 to go in the game, 47-48. But JRU failed to make use of its final possession thanks to a botched field goal attempt.

“We could not run in the first quarter and we’re relying heavily on set plays so we only shot 26 percent,” said San Sebastian mentor Jorge Gallent. “When we started running in the second half, our offense started to work.”

The Stags erased a 35-40 deficit with a 13-0 run and a Jim Viray basket with 2:39 left on the clock to seize the edge, 48-40, before the Heavy Bombers unleashed their own run.

Rookie Raymond Maconocido, who had seven points, made two free throws off a Jay-R Bulangis foul to give San Sebastian a 50-47 lead with 13 seconds left. JRU tried to extend the game into overtime but Wilson’s three-point attempt fell short.

Gallent’s wards forced the Heavy Bombers to commit 17 turnovers, which resulted in 11 points. They managed to offset a -13 rebounding disadvantage (48-35) thanks in part to a +6 advantage in fastbreak points.

Bulawan and Saquillo led San Sebastian with eight points each, while Jimbo Aquino netted seven. Jason Ballesteros, one of the contenders for MVP this season, tallied 16 rebounds and swatted three shots on top of two points.

JR Sena poured in 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Heavy Bombers, who also lost to the Stags in the first round, 54-57, in similar fashion.

The scores:

San Sebastian 52 – Bulawan 8, Saquillo 8, Aquino 7, Maconocido 7, Viray 7, del Rio 6, Raymundo 4, Semira 2, Ballesteros 2, Zulueta 1, Bringas 0, Najorda 0.

JRU 47 – Sena 16, Wilson 10, Cagoco 8, Hayes 5, Njei 4, Bulangis 2, Nocom 2, Agas 0, Kabigting 0, Lopez 0, Montemayor 0, Pradas 0.

Quarter scores: 6-11; 18-26; 33-38; 52-47

  • tj says:

    Good job baste!

    ***animo san beda!!!!!!***

  • Grrr! says:

Wow! A 7 -game winning streak. And they almost gave up on Gallent after losing the first few games. Baste is back with a vengeance and now a final four contender. The last time they plyed in the FF was during the last year of coach Turing. If Buenafe did not leave for greener pastures, SSC would be in no 1 or 2 spot. Buenafe would have been the franchise player for the stags. But after giving the staglets 3 championships, it was time for him to move on to something better.

  • bystander says:

For Baste to get twice to beat advantage, they have to win their last 2 remaining games against Benilde (pwede)and San Beda (malabo) so the Stags will end up with 10-4.

Aside from the above scenario, they have to pray that Letran will lose at least 2 of their remaining 3 games against the Cardinals, the Sardines and then the Red Lions AND pray even harder that the Hopia Boys lose at least one more of their last remaining games against PCU and MIT. This way, both Letran and JRU will only be at 9-5.

Mathematically still possible (bilog ang bola eh!) although highly improbable in my opinion.

  • SeBAsTiNo says:

    NEXT VICTIM: CSB!

    GO! BASTE! make it 9 @ 29!

  • bystander says:

    Nevertheless, congrats to Baste!

Nice game against JRU! Too bad Ballesteros is stepping up only this late in the season. Kung napa-aga lang sana ng konti yung pag-peak ni Ballesteros, Baste could have won more games earlier on and should be playing for 2nd or 3rd spot instead of just the 3rd and 4th.

  • bystander says:

    @Sebastino:

Bakit 9@29? All this time I thought Baste has already won 11 seniors championships? Walo pa lang ba?

  • Grrr! says:

By the way, baste’s 7 game streak is second only to jru’s 8. csjl’s winning streak of 6 is third. note however that beda broke the winning streak of those three teams. so, beda is the streak breaker. maganda itong FF labanan this season.

  • SeBAsTiNo says:

    @ bystander:
    9 @ 29. 9 wins @ Aug.29 match-up this season lang po.

yung sinasabi niyo po eh yung championship title na meron yung baste eh.

  • pusongbaste says:

    @ bystander,

ndi yun championships ang sinasabi ni sebastino, un date! 29 db? Pero mali sya kasi 7 winning streak palang to, so ang susunod na streak will be 8, dapat 8 @ 29! btw 11 na nga ang championships ng Baste.

    @ sebastino,
tol 7 winning streaks pa lang ang team natin, so dapat 8 @ 29! ok? hehe

  • pusongbaste says:

    @ sebastino,

ah ok, gets ko na, cenxia, Haha peace

  • pusongbaste says:

    GO BASTE!!!
    GO FOR 9 @ 29 BASTE!!!
    FIGHT!!! FIGHT!!! FIGHT!!!

  • pusongbaste says:

    @ bystander,

We don’t have to pray for other teams to lose. Gaya nga ng sinabi ni Coach Gallent sa mga interviews we don’t have to worry about other teams losing, we just have to woory our games.

KAYA BASTA BASTE LABAN LANG NG LABAN!!!
BASTA BASTE DI BASTA BASTA!!! – dyanibravo
    FIGHT UNTIL THE END BASTE!!!

    GO BASTE!!!
    BRAVO BASTE!!!

  • bystander says:

    @pusongbaste
That’s the spirit! Good luck to your team then.

    @sebastino
    Thanks for the clarification.

  • poging baste says:
