Ateneo stops UE in the endgame, notches win no. 10

ATENEO DE MANILA University seems to have University of the East’s number this season.
Chris Tiu buried a trey with 13 ticks left in regulation to send the game into overtime and had Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Ryan Buenafe finish the game for his squad as the Blue Eagles scored a come-from-behind, 61-57 win over the Red Warriors in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition last August 21, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.
With the victory, the Ateneo Blue Eagles improved to 10-1, strengthening their bid for a twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four in the process. The Katipunan outfit also swept its season series with the boys from Recto.
“Definitely, this was a tough game against one of the toughest teams in the league, said Ateneo mentor Norman Black. “We expected a tough game and good thing, Chris [Tiu] and Ryan [Buenafe] hit those big shots.
Trailing by three at 47-50, Tiu, who scored 18 points to go along with nine rebounds and three assists, faked Marcy Arellano and nailed a clutch triple that evened the count at 50.
In overtime, Ateneo shattered a 57-57 deadlock thanks to Buenafe, who penetrated down the lane and scored on a difficult lay-up to steer the Blue and White to a two-point lead with 21.1 ticks left.
The Red Warriors tried to tie the count, but Elmer Espiritu failed to convert an undergoal stab after being tightly defended by Nonoy Baclao, who then hauled down the rebound and fished a foul from UE guard Paul Zamar to stop the clock.
Baclao, who registered a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, calmly sank his two free throws with 6.5 seconds left to seal the deal for the Blue Eagles.
UE, which went a season-low 2-of-3 from the foul line, dropped to a 6-5 slate – just one-and-a-half games ahead of fifth-running University of Santo Tomas (4-6) for the last semifinals slot.
The vastly-improved Al-Hussaini paced Ateneo with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Zamar, son of former UE coach Boysie, led UE with 13 points.
The Red Warriors took a 42-36 lead at the end of third quarter but squandered their advantage after the Blue Eagles went on a 9-0 rampage to trim the deficit to one, 47-48. UE forward Hans Thiele converted on an 18-foot bankshot that increased his squad’s lead to three, before Tiu sent the game into an extra five-minute period.
Ateneo made 19 of 25 attempts from the foul line. The Blue Eagles also surprisingly limited the quick Red Warriors to just four fastbreak points.
The scores:
Ateneo 61 – Al-Hussaini 19, Tiu 18, Baclao 10, Buenafe 6, Salamat 6, Baldos 2, Salva 0, Nkemakolam 0, Long 0, Escueta 0, Reyes 0.
UE 57 – Zamar 13, Martinez 11, Thiele 10, Espiritu 8, Arellano 8, Llagas 4, Lee 3, Noble 0, Lingganay 0, Bandaying 0, Reyes 0.
Quarter scores: 12-13; 21-22; 36-42; 50-50; 61-57

Sorry loss for UE
This game shows the heart of this Ateneo team. The never say die attitude. The heart of all the players and most of all THE ATENEO TEAM!
Chris Tiu nailed a cold blooded 3 pointer to tie the game. Ryan made a game winning play. Rabeh? Hmmm, all i can think of is MVP!
To all the Ateneo doubters this one is for you make yourself a believer.
ANG SARAP TALAGA MAGING ATENISTA!
FLY HIGH BLUE EAGLES!
ONE BIG FIGHT!
SEE YOU IN THE FINALS WHOEVER YOU ARE!
Said it once (or maybe more), and I’ll say it again…
Congrats to the Blue Eagles for a well-deserved win!
Looking forward to One Big Fight filled with Green and White in the Finals!!!
Animo La Salle!
It’s not yet safe to assume that Ateneo will be in the finals. Remember that they will be most probably against either UST or UE (even FEU or DLSU) in the Final Four. UST or UE (if we face them in the F4) will surely extract revenge against Ateneo after beating them twice in the elimination.
The next two games of Ateneo versus UP and NU(?) should be easy. I just hope everything will turn out very well for the Blue Eagles. So that come the game against DLSU, we have nothing to lose but our pride :) But its okay coz that can just easily be scratched off!
Zamar’s a rookie, right?
I remember last year’s admu-dlsu playoff for the twice to beat advantage, where kirk long (a rookie) led the team in scoring. What happened? admu lost.
I’m not generalizing ah. It’s just an observation =)
Rest assure that the Warriors will get back on their track.
GO fight RED and WHITE!
GO UE!
Thanks to the Eagles.
The Tigers definitely still have their chances. Hehe.. Peace!
Congrats Eagles!
Viva Santo Tomas!!
heartbreak loss for the warriors…but for sure they will extract a revenge against the eagles in the final four.. dont count out us yet… warriors never give up..
foreverblue,
Exactly. The game between our schools on September 6 will only be a matter of pride since it will have no bearing. May the best team win.
And sad to say UE choked under pressure once again. Sayang. They could’ve had that game. Nerves got in to them. And of course, congrats to the Blue Eagles. Good game for Buenafe.
congrats ATENEO!!!
we hope that blue and green
will face in the finals!!!
AGAIN!
GO ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT!!!
sayang yung for UE. they had so many chances to seal that game. if espiritu converted the ft after his and1, it would have been over. poor coaching din in the last few seconds from dindo. he kept on reminding his boys that ateneo will foul. so they dribbled the time away waiting for the foul. he should have instructed them to go hard to the basket early kasi dun pa lang magbibigay ng foul yung ateneo. tuloy, 3 secs na lang yung natira for their final attempt. tiu was not there to end the game for the eagles and ue still manages to lose that one. good show of heart for the eagles

UST has a change but still UE has the bigger change of making it to F4, kung itong game na ito ang makikita natin sa F4 UE at ADMU hindi sigurado ang mag taga katipunan dyan, still i like coach dindo’s game plan it was Marcy ayaw tumira sa corner ipinasa pa kay elmer, all pa ang score non sa ot mga 58 sec na lang yun.
Just a thought:
If ADMU and DLSU finishes the eliminations enjoying the twice to beat advantage, I think it would be better if they dont end up tied. A tie will entail a tie break for 1st spot. With the way the games have recently been played, I just hope no player gets injured.
Needless to say, Im sure both teams will strive to win regardless if the result is ADMU v. DLSU III.
i too would not want to see a tie in the first two slots. that will only happen if dlsu wins all of their remaining games. saturday will give us a better picture of the final 4 scenario
The Season for ADMU and DLSU ending in a tie will mean more sell outs and sponsorships for ABS-CBN. But if for the teams since their ultimate goal is a championship, they wouldn’t like a tie break game. It will just wear and tear the both teams and will only favor the 3rd and 4th teams.
Both teams had practically the same rebounds and turnover numbers. Ateneo shot horribly at 29% field goal shooting… But they still managed to grind out a win. Sorry to say, but it seems UE really can’t execute well in the end, when it really matters.
pahabol lang…
And lupit ng winning drive ni Buenafe! He’s a shoo-in for rookie of the year, and it will be fun watching him in the next 4 years. :)
EDIT: “Ang” lupit, not “And” lupit.
the warriors choked!
FEU lang tumalo, at tatalo sa ADMU this season. Maniwala kayo.
UE: Just Choking!!!
@jack bauer
i’d wait until after the game on saturday
sang ayon aaq sau wawawiwa..wag muna mgyabang habang d pa nanalo..
Kapag ba nag-tie for first (or kahit anong rank), automatic na may tie breaker game? or ung ‘quotient’ gagamitin? tanong lang.. tnx!
@culdado
I am not sure about the rules this year. Last year, DLSU and ADMU were tied for 2nd place and no quotient was used (Ateneo won both regular season games and lost the playoff for 2nd place). So i am guessing this time, it will also be a playoff game to determine the first. So these two teams will be losers of that deal since they may be tired after the playoff. Dlsu and admu games are very emotional games.
i think what happened a few years back was that the 3rd and 4th teams were tied. they had a game to determine who gets the 3rd spot. i think this is a stupid rule to have. ang panalo lang dito yung mga kumikita. kasi parang the teams can “choose” who they want to face. tapos wala rin namang sense kasi pareho namang twice to beat and 1 at 2. ang tie for 2nd and 3rd lang talaga ang dapat may extra game, all the rest quotient na lang. parang pag tied na ang 7th at 8th, di naman sila naglalaro para malaman sino ang totoong 7th di ba?
if two teams are tied for a spot, there is automatically a playoff game to determine who will get it. the quotient system comes into play if three teams are tied. ito ung napansin ko the previous seasons. tama ba?
nakakatakot lang. kasi pag ADMU vs UE sa Final Four (assuming ADMU gets #1 and UE gets #4), siguradong di papatalo UE. I think the Blue Eagles will have to use their twice-to-beat advantage pa. I hope that what happened in 2002 won’t happen this season with Ateneo and UE in the Final Four and the lower ranked team getting to beat the other one.
Go Ateneo!
ADMU AND DLSU FOR THE FINALS
abcde,
dati, pag may playoff or championship lalo na pag admu vs. dlsu, ang attitude ko ay “bring it on!”.
pero after going through 5 admu vs. dlsu games last year, i realized, nakakapagod at nakaka-drain pala. hindi pa ako ang naglalaro nyan. nanonood lang.
ang pinaka-draining ay ang pakikipag-agawan para sa kahit na anong ticket ang mabibili. in trying to acquire a ticket for admu vs. dlsu v, trinangkaso ako. feeling ko mamamatay ako.
this has got to be the eagles’ best game so far this season! i think it’s even better than the ateneo-la salle game, although i watched the latter live and i caught the UE game only on tv. still, the excitement was overwhelming, even unbearable! i was still hyperventilating 10 mins after the game and i sang the alma mater hymn at home. HAHA. in fact, i’m not over it yet.
go captain chris! those two triples were absolutely impressive. :) rabeh, ryan and nonoy equally deserve credit for yesterday’s monster win. amazing teamwork. :)
fly (even) high(er), ateneo!
napakasarap maging atenista. :D
Pumupunta pala ang mga taga-NBI to a test samples, like forensics and presentaion of evidences.
Too bad their “soaring falcons” makes the university look like they were down by 30 points by everybody.
good job ateneo keep up the good work, just dont let UE take 3 points, especially martinez and also you have to guard thier power forward thiele and espiritu one big fight, the fight is far from over”its not how you start the game its how you finish it”gud luck, thanks to baclao, buenafe and husseni especially to chris tiu who knocks 3 points in the final seconds that brought their game into overtime
A sub-text to the leaden feet and poor hands on display yesterday: it’s the inescapable reality that our boys are in the thick of academic responsibilities. For instance, Rabeh just finished Philo orals the day before, and Kirk was facing the computer and rushing a paper just prior to the game. Like it or not, that’s a necessary, indeed priority distraction that comes with the territory of student-athlete. Pardon my saying so, but that’s a thicket that not too many of our opponents have to hack through. You know who you are…

bakit hangang ngayon wala pa ring podcast this week???
@ iLOVEateneo
it might be the best game in terms of excitement, but definitely not in terms of gameplay. 21 turnovers and 29% field goal shooting is not respectable.
still, it was truly a cardiac ballgame. i watched it live in araneta and my heart felt like it was gonna give in any minute in the final moments of the game. watching it live was well worth it, although that amount of excitement is aggravating too. :D
@De Ocampo Cobra
BOLD PREDICTION!
This is what I think will happen. Feel free to comment just don’t be rude. This is only an OPINION! Thanks
1.) Ateneo
2.) lasalle
3.) FEU
4.) UE
Final Four
Ateneo-UE (1 game) Ateneo
lasalle-FEU(2 games) lasalle
The Finals
Ateneo-lasalle(2 games) Ateneo.
a very credible opinion indeed!
the 5 year reign of ateneo starts this season.
@whilelight – are you saying that rabeh and kirk are actually studying? i thought uaap players just play basketball, attend classes for show, and end up cum laudes if they win the crown.
one big loss..
@nike123
@Grrr!

Sure Ateneo this year. This year’s lineup will not choke. Ibang level na talaga Ateneo ngayon.
Getting the OT and the subsequent win vs the warriors shows this ADMU team is no choker. Even Black was not in a daze unlike in the last game of the 2006 Finals vs UST. That was Ateneo’s year but they fizzled out in the end and made Jarencio appear more than what he really is – an average coach.
this myt be the year of the eagles.. but only in the eliminations.. just like wat happened with UE last yr.. Marcy arellano is a sold out.. halatang binenta nya ung laro.. la sya magawa.. hawak sya ng binondo boys sa “odds”.. its either ateneo – feu for the championships Or ateneo – lasalle.. who knows, what happened last yr might happen again.. to Ateneo.. to the eagles, put your heads down boy.. wag msyado kampante.. bka c chris tiu na susunod na magbenta ng laro.. BEWARE!!
ADMU is not UE.
The coach is not a DPA.
This is definitely the first year of the dynasty.
@Solid_DLRT
we all know mayaman yan cla chris tiu.. pro kht anong yaman mo, pagnahawakan sya ng sindikato sa odds/ mapipilitan ka tlgang magbenta ng laro.. talamak yan sa pustahan ng odds.. buhay ang nkasalalay sa ganyan.. kht gsto mong magchampion, kng isa sa mahal mo sa buhay mpapahamak, mpipilitan ka tlgang ibenta.. thats why beware.. paalala lng to sa ateneo kapatid..
