THE STATE University’s impressive start was all too much for Adamson.
University of the Philippines exploited the Falcons’ lethargy on the defensive end to score a lopsided 73-42 victory in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition last August 21, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Former De La Salle Santiago Zobel standouts Migs de Asis and Martin Reyes led the charge for this season’s hosts, netting 18 and 13 points, respectively, as they won their third game in 11 outings to put them in solo sixth place – a far cry from their 0-14 effort last year.
“This is what we really wanted, to win just like this, said de Asis, who shot 4-of-8 from three-point territory and a perfect 3-of-3 from the field after hitting blanks in the first half. “We need to improve each game despite only having three remaining games.
UP limited a listless Adamson quintet to only 19 points in the first three quarters. The Falcons played without veterans Marc Agustin and Paul Gonzalgo, and fell to their ninth loss in 11 matches, and seventh straight defeat overall.
Agustin and Gonzalgo were suspended due to disciplinary reasons by coach Leo Austria.
Big man Magi Sison and Paul Sorongon fired in 10 points apiece to reinforce the Maroons’ balanced offensive attack, while team leading-scorer Jay Agbayani had eight.
“This win gives us some hope, said Aboy Castro, the UP mentor. “We try to be competitive in our other games even if reaching the Final Four is getting dim for us. All we just need is play one game at a time.
Adamson’s 42 points was the lowest total output by a team since National University scored 40 in a 20-point blowout loss to De La Salle on July 15, 2004. Also, UP’s 31-point winning margin is the largest by any team this season, nipping the 30-point margin posted by the University of the East, ironically against the Maroons
Rey Gorospe led the Falcons with 14 points. He was the only Falcon in double-digits.
UP scored 21 more points from three-point territory, and held the San Marcelino outfit to a miserable 25.9 percent shooting clip from the field. The Fighting Maroons also dished out more assists than the Falcons, holding a +9 advantage in that department.
The scores:
UP 73 – de Asis 18, Reyes 13, Sison 10, Sorongon 10, Agbayani 8, Lopez 4, Marfori 2, dela Victoria 2, Co 2, Maniego 2, Hipolito 2, Pajela 0, Astorga 0, Braganza 0.
Adamson 42 – Gorospe 14, Alvarez 7, Nuyles 5, Yambot 5, Olalia 4, Margallo 4, Lapitan 2, Peñalosa 1, Galinato 0, Lozada 0, Cañada 0, Colina 0.
Quarter scores: 17-10; 38-14; 54-19; 73-42
