Red-hot San Sebastian College shocks Letran

SAN SEBASTIAN College-Recoletos is still red-hot.
Big man Jason Ballesteros once again proved to be too tough to handle as he powered the Stags to their sixth straight win – a 76-73 upset of the Letran Knights in the 84th NCAA men’s basketball competition last August 20, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.
Ballesteros delivered nine of his 11 points in the first quarter to complement his 14 rebounds and three blocks, while Jim Viray tallied a season-high 22 markers as SSC-R dealt the Knights their first losing streak of the season.
“I had an awful start in the first half, so I tried my best to play in the following quarters,” said Ballesteros, who told media reporters that he’s preparing for 2009 rookie draft.
“Jason [Ballesteros] did another great job. In the past few games our players stepped up. Our chances of making it to the Final Four are getting better,” said San Sebastian coach Jorge Gallent. “All we need is sustain this kind of effort.”
Viray shot 5-of-7 from beyond the three-point zone and grabbed six rebounds, while fifth year guard Franz Delgado had 10 points and four assists to help steer the Stags to a 7-4 record and a half-game back of both their victims and defending champion San Beda College.
The game was close from start to finish.
The Knights were up by as much as six points in the final quarter thanks to the shooting of guard Rey Guevarra. However, Gallent’s wards made a furious charge and took the lead when Viray scored on a lay-up with 2:21 left in the game to hand the Stags a 72-71 lead.
Rookie playmaker Raymond Maconocido then dished out a pass to a cutting Ballesteros, which gave San Sebastian a 74-71 lead with 29 ticks remaining in the game.
Jam Cortes quickly scored on a lay-up for the Knights to move closer at 73-74. But point guard Pamboy Raymundo calmly sank two free throws off a Kirk del Rosario foul to seal the game.
Letran tried to send the game into overtime but rookie Jaypee Belencion’s missed a desperation three.
RJ Jazul led the Knights with 15 points, while Guevarra and Kojack Melegrito added 12 points each for the Muralla outfit.
The scores:
San Sebastian 76 – Viray 22, Ballesteros 11, Delgado 10, Raymundo 9, Maconocido 8, Saquillo 7, Bringas 5, Bulawan 3, Aquino 1, Zulueta 0, Najorda 0.
Letran 73 – Jazul 15, Guevarra 12, Melegrito 12, Daa 9, Cortes 9, Cabonce 7, Belencion 3, Gutilban 2, del Rosario 2, J. Foronda 2, Ranises 0, Dangcal 0, Latonio 0.
Quarter scores: 18-12; 36-35; 54-53; 76-73

FINALS = letran vs jru…(hoping)…
gudjob baste… its an upset again… this season is so exciting… wlang team na nagdodominate ng standing this season..and every game is unpredictable… unlike last year walang kwenta panuurin ksi alam na kung cnu mananalo….sa friday, tough game… pride of beda vs. winning streak of Jru… ganda n2… gudluck to beda and jru…
The Lions need to prove that they really are Championship Material while the Bombers are going to try to extend their winning streak. Both teams with so much to lose with only one victor in the end.
And I’ve got a feeling that the Lions are gonna chomp the living daylight out of the Bombers.
Animo!
exciting nga yang game na yan…
JRU vs. SBC i hope mag click ang shooting ng jru para maka lusot. i think yan ang weakness ng beda bzta nag click ang shooting ng opponent delikado…
i think dun sa baste hindi na swerte yun. nagbu2nga na ung hardwork nila and besides one of the top contenders sila b4 d season so dapat lang na maganda ipakita nila..6-game win streak is not a joke..
WOOHOO……………
CONGRATS BASTE!!!
@ hayip,
gusto ko yun!
Go Baste!
Go for 7 @ 27
Bravo Baste!!!
As a bedan, I would prefer to lose the game on friday. But that is just for positioning. If we beat JRU on friday, we are going to be the number team on the league and most probably much up with San Sebastian during the final four. Tsk tsk, that’s the most difficult match-up that we can get with the current Final Four teams. I would prefer to match-up with Letran since this team dont have anything if you check their pressing defense. Every team who can break Letran pressing defense have a great chance to defeat them. JRU’s mainman are Cagoco and Sena, both are not consistent scorer. Fortunately for them most of it went in, but that is a low percentage shots that we prefer to battle with. San Sebastian is a complete team with a legitimate big man in Jason Ballesteros and scorer in Jim Viray. San Beda’s play circle around Ekwe and Ballesteros can match-up with him pretty evenly. During the first round our team barely beat this team for one point, that is why this match-up in second round is more exciting to me more than anything. But just as I said this just my preference. On friday walang excitement yan, siguradong ipamumuka ng San Beda sa JRU na sometimes you can win by shooting the hell out beyond the arc but not ALL THE TIME.
dati UAAP lang ako ngayon pati NCAA na maganda na ang mga laro hinde kagaya last year. palagay ko mahihirapan lahat ng team sa baste.
JRU is next!!
BRAVO BASTE
@MVP
Impressive win. Congrats Baste.
So, what’s happening now to Letran and San Beda? Is it means that they are no longer invisible this season because some of their opponents already knew how to beat them? Is this an “off-nightâ€? only for both teams? I guess not. Otherwise, their dream rematch would just be a dream.
The next games are more interesting, JRU vs SBC on Friday, then SSC-R vs JRU by next week. As of now, these teams are really dangerous than the formers.
Good luck to all.
^Yup. It only makes the season more exciting.

MannyP, your forecast for the current standing is WRONG, it should be as follows:
Current:
JRU 8 – 2
CSJL 7 – 3
SBC 7 – 3
SSC-R 7 – 4
Make some adjustment on your subsequent forecasts.
tanong lng, import ba si gallent?
di nman yata yun pinoy e.
Knighty:
Thanks for the correction, but only the current standings will be affected, if you’ll notice JRU and SBC have identical records of 8-3 on Aug 22, both teams are going to face each other on that day.

Sorry Knighty
hello guys can i ask lang plsss…
if meron magkano nman kya?
curious lang tlga ako.. pls..
paki sagot nman.. tnx
as i see it, among the teams in the ncaa right now, JRU has the strongest first five. C(Sena) PF(Nocom) SF(Hayes) SG(Wilson) PG(Cagoco). and with a decent bench players in the likes of Bulangis, Pradas and Njie, this team is a very strong contender for the Seasn 84th Crown… Parang ito yung team ng San Beda when they got their 2006 Championship Crown where in they have this very formidable first five in C(Ekwe) PF(Aljamal) SF(Menor) SG(Angeles) and PG(Escobal)…
the first key on defeating the rampaging San Sebastian Stags is to STOP Jim “Carrey” Bruce “Almighty” Viray! this guy is a scoring machine! stopping this guy will paralyze 50% of the team… Second is pushing Ballesteros out of his comfort zone…
limiting this guys will most likely result to a win.
@ MannyP,
Nice prediction!
Sana magkatotoo… hehe
jim viray is the leading scorer for the stags, but he is only averaging 14 pts/game. meaning, he is not the only one scoring in this team (though he is the most consistent one)
Limiting only ballesteros and viray will most likely to still result to a loss if the opponent will not focus on others(maconocido, raymundo, delgado, najorda, all these guys can definitely score)
Thank you MannyP for the clarification.
Assuming the results are contradicted to your forecasts, which two teams will enter the finals? Jose Rizal and San Sebastian or Jose Rizal and Letran or Jose Rizal and San Beda? What do you think?
Nung 1st year nila Bulawan at Raymundo maganda ang scoring nila. Sa ngayon Maconocido is doing very good in his role in the team. I hope magstepup sila habang may panahon pa at lalong lalo na sa game against JRU.
GO BASTE!!!
BRAVO BASTE!!!
BEAT THEM!!!
WE BELIEVE!!!
As I can see, San Beda and San Sebastian are the only strong teams left in the elimination round of Jose Rizal and if they will prevail from those teams they will automatically sit on the top spots (1 or 2) with a twice to beat advantage.
I want to see some forecasts.
nice 6 straight wins baste…
su2nod nmn ang JRU…
CHAMPIONSHIP?
kayang-kaya yn…baste pa…
durugin ntin ang san beda at ang JRarUy…
oo nga pla…picture perfect ung dunk ni jason ballesteros ah…nice dunk…
guz2 kong mkita yn yn against san beda in the face of AKON este SAM EKWE pla…jejeje…
may video ba nung dunk?
@DarkKnight
JRU still have MIT. I still believe na Mapua is a strong team.
eMmAn

TAKOT LNG YAN BATA!
asa kapa mananalo kau sa baste.
@ SHAW,
Use your logic naman. Your contradicting what your saying.
Pusongbaste, the top 3 teams (JRU, CSJL and SBC) are already in the middle of your words “needle’s hole and in my own forecast your team, SSC-R, would also have a hard time for the crown.
pusongbaste
hehehe…bkt ka PIKON???
BAWI ka NALANG NXT TIME…..
