Morial, Blazers stun Mapua

COLLEGE of Saint Benilde kept its flickering hopes for a Final Four spot alive after upsetting Mapua Institute of Technology, 66-56, in 84th NCAA men’s basketball tournament last August 20, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.

Veteran guard Jeff Morial came up big for the Blazers in the second half, firing 14 of his 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc to help his squad snap a three-game losing skid and improve to 4-7 in the team standings.

“It is a hard task for us to be in the Final Four right now, but our goal is to improve every game,” said CSB coach Gee Abanilla, who took over from Caloy Garcia in the off-season. “I told the players not to think about the Final Four but just play their game.”

The Cardinals, who shocked San Beda College just last week, suffered their fifth loss in 10 outings and slipped in the race for the last semifinal berth.

“It is a welcome relief, after so many games of frustration,” said Abanilla. “Although some of our supporters lost their faith on us, but we never gave up.”

Mapua was in control during the first half but faded in the final 20 minutes after taking a nine-point halftime cushion.

Guard Angelo Montecastro scored 10 points to go with four assists and four steals, while seldom-used wingman Dustin Posadas had nine for the Blazers, whose only win last season curiously came at the expense of Mapua.

Combo forward Ian Mazo scored 13 points and had two blocks, while Allan Mangahas tallied 11 markers for the Cardinals, who failed to get good numbers from reigning MVP Kelvin dela Peña. The Filipino-Canadian hotshot was limited to just seven markers.

St. Benilde 66 – Morial 18, Montecastro 10, Posadas 9, David 8, Dalanon 8, Mañalac 4, Abolucion 3, Johnston 3, Manlapaz 3, Sevilla 0.

Mapua 56 – Mazo 13, Mangahas 11, Sarangay 8, dela Peña 7, Banal 6, Guillermo 3, Acosta 2, Cornejo 2, N. Pascual 2, Soriano 2, J. Pascual 0.

Quarter scores: 9-12; 21-30; 45-40; 66-56

    nice win csb, that’ll make the final four race interesting. looks like last spot is gonna be hotly contested. benilde probably won’t make it though that was a big loss to perpetual last game. but even i thought there wasn’t gonna be another win this season. glad to be mistaken. nice work blazers.

    thats my prediction too for the f4 hehe…

    for me the problem of the cardinals is their focus,its always like that,they dominate the 1st half,but 2nd half is always a disaster

    they are out of the contest right now,unless a miracle will happen,but again,if they survive the elimination,they will face SBC again,3 straight years of defeat
