UE drubs listless Fighting Maroons

A BREAKOUT game and an encore performance served University of the East pretty well in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition.
Shooting guard Marcy Arellano broke out of his slumber to steer his Red Warriors to a repeat of their 29-point first round drubbing of University of the Philippines, 95-65, last August 16, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Arellano finished with a new personal-high of 23 points, 21 of them coming in the first half where UE found little resistance against an outmatched Fighting Maroons quintet.
“This was Marcy’s breakout game,” said UE coach Dindo Pumaren. “He struggled in the first round, but he managed to get his game going here in the second round. I hope he continues this kind of play.”
The Warriors jumped the gun on the Maroons, racing to an 11-0 lead in the first period. UP’s first field goal came in the 5:09 mark on a Mark Lopez conversion. The closest the Season 71 hosts could get was within six, 13-19.
With Arellano scoring more than half of his team’s output in the first period, the Fighting Maroons couldn’t stop the Warriors onslaught. The 2004 UAAP Rookie of the Year scored 15 in the first period alone to give the Red Warriors a 26-13 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.
In the second period, Arellano fired a trey to give UE a 42-28 advantage. With 46
seconds to play before the halftime break, the Recto-based outfit scored on a scintillating play anchored by James Martinez, who executed a perfect alley-oop pass to Hans Thiele.
Back-to-back baskets by Thiele triggered another huge scoring run by UE, which vaulted to a 54-32 lead inside the eight-minute mark of the third quarter. The State University just could not find any answers to the Red Warriors’ scoring blitz.
UP committed turnover after turnover, which Pumaren’s wards pounced on. The Fighting Maroons fell deeper and the lead ballooned to as high as 35 points, thanks to a triple by Toto Bandaying that gave UE an 86-51 edge halfway through the fourth period.
So unforgiving were the Warriors that they capitalized on UP’s 24 turnovers by scoring 30 points, more than enough for them to notch their sixth win in 10 games.
UP, meanwhile, fell to 2-8. Jay Agbayani and Paul Sorongon led the Maroons with 17 markers apiece.
The scores:
UE 95 – Arellano 23, Bandaying 11, Llagas 11, Thiele 10, Acuña 6, Espiritu 6, Lee 5, Martinez 4, Noble 4, Reyes 4, Tagarda 3, Duran 2, Etrone 2, Lingganay 2, Zamar 2, Flores 0.
UP 65 – Agbayani 17, Sorongon 17, Lopez 8, Reyes 6, Sison 6, de Asis 5, Co 4, Pajela 2, Astorga 0, Braganza 0, Marfori 0, Hipolito 0, dela Victoria 0, Maniego 0.
Quarter scores: 26-13; 48-30; 74-45; 95-65

Mas nakakatakot ang score distrubution ng UE after kay Arellano wala na i think kung gusto nila na matalo ang ADMU at FEU dapat hindi ganyan ang scoring nila they need Martinez and Lee step up sa scoring pag ganyan lagi yung mga nasa baba ng standing lang ang kaya nilang talunin, sana makagawa ng paraan si coach Dindo.

wag nyong sabihin na pang NCAA ang UP porket ala pa silang panalo. baka indi ninyo alam na kayang kaya din talunin ng mga taga NCAA ang teams sa UAAP. baka indi kayo nanonood ng mga pre-seasonal invitational tournament bago ang UAAP at NCAA. be careful of your words.

This is what I call - ‘overshadowing’.
If the Red Warriors were consistently playing like what they have demonstrated in their playoffs against UP, delikado ang FEU. If they will…
No offense to UE, may pattern halos lahat ng pagkapanalo nila. I hope to see more of this consistency from the Red Warriors.
