DE LA SALLE University showed the true character of a champion by coming from behind to turn back National University, 79-67, and move closer to yet another Final Four stint in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last August 16, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Green Archers, who came out sluggish in the early goings of the game, unloaded 31 third quarter points to turn a 31-42 halftime deficit to a 62-51 advantage entering the final 10 minutes of play.
NU, which seemed headed for a major upset, collapsed in the third period as it went scoreless for six minutes while the Archers unloaded 19 unanswered points.
La Salle’s only lead before the pivotal third period came in the first period at 17-16, and it turned into an arduous climb for coach Franz Pumaren’s wards. Their first taste of the lead came in the 4:16 mark on a JV Casio triple followed by an LA Revilla lay-up and Bader Malabes trey for a 53-46 lead
As the Bulldogs fell apart, everything appeared to go right for the Archers. A dunk by Indonesian Ferdinand and a triple by Revilla gave DLSU its biggest lead, 78-61, with only 2:44 left in the game.
With the win, La Salle improved its record to 8-2, cementing its hold on solo second place. It is a half-game back of fierce rival and pacesetter Ateneo de Manila, which
has an 8-1 record.
The victory likewise gave the Green and White enough cushion as they miss the services of Pumaren for three games, including the much-anticipated game in the second round against the Blue Eagles.
Pumaren will still handle the Archers’ game against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Saturday before taking a leave of absence to guide the Nokia Pilipinas Youth basketball team, which is competing in the Asian Youth Championships in Iran.
In Pumaren’s absence, assistant coach Jack Santiago will call the shots for the Archers.
“I would like to thank La Salle for allowing me to coach the national team,â€? said Pumaren. “I trust my coaching staff. I’m sure my players will step up even though I won’t be around at the crucial stage of the eliminations.”
Edwin Asoro led NU, which fell to 2-8, with 19 points, while Raymond Aguilar had 11.
The scores:
De La Salle 79 – Casio 22, Barua 14, Revilla 8, Mangahas 7, Maierhofer 7, Malabes 6, Bagatsing 5, Ferdinand 4, Villanueva 4, Webb 2, Walsham 0, Mendoza 0.
NU 67 – Asoro 19, Aguilar 11, Jahnke 10, Baloran 7, Luy 6, Ponferrada 4, Tungcul 3, dela Cruz 3, Catamora 2, Garcia 2, Batac 0, Berry 0.
Quarter scores: 19-22; 31-42; 62-51; 79-67

Bakit si Rico Maierhofer seven points lang. Teka, how many rebounds? Feeling ko kasi humina siya compared to last year, parang MVP.

How come Malabes and Walsham aren’t contributing that much?
And to think that they’re some of the most experienced in the team, it’s a bit disappointing that they’ve been outplayed by their younger teammates for most of the season.
Honestly, with this kind of “now you see me, now you don’t” performance, i won’t be surprised if these guys remain as second stringer for the rest of the season or even next year (they might even become 3rd stringers at this rate if this keeps up).
