Al-Hussaini, Tiu send UST to fifth loss of the season

ARGUABLY the UAAP’s most explosive duo once again delivered for Ateneo de Manila University.
Chris Tiu hit the big outside shots while Rabeh Al-Hussaini delivered down low as the Blue Eagles were virtually unstoppable in disposing of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 85-76, in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last August 14, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Tiu, who is playing in his final year for the Blue Eagles, waxed hot to finish with 29 points, while Al-Hussaini went toe-to-toe with UST counterpart Jervy Cruz in the paint to tally 24 markers.
“We made our outside shots despite having a little problem in defending the shaded lane, said Tiu, whose Blue Eagles upped their mark to a league-leading 8-1. “But we’ll take this win.
Ateneo finished with a 14-of-31 clip from the paint, while UST shot 21-of-54.
“We’ve been hurting in the shaded lane, but the team with a high shooting percentage, of course, will win the game, said Ateneo coach Norman Black. “We are aiming for the top two spots. I credit Al-Hussaini and Tiu for making crucial shots.
Eric Salamat, who nearly suffered a dislocated jaw in the Eagles’ game against FEU last week, poured in 14 points.
The Growling Tigers threatened in the final period at 60-65, with Cruz scoring a jumper. But the Blue Eagles uncorked a 10-2 run to erect a 75-62 spread with 2:31 remaining.
UST, which never led throughout the game, slid to 4-5 and solo fifth place to fall a full game behind University of the East (5-4) in the hunt for the last semifinals berth.
Cruz had 23 points and 18 rebounds, while Dylan Ababou chipped in with 17 points for the Growling Tigers.
Ateneo stepped on the gas in the early going, with Tiu and Salamat scoring the points to help create a 20-7 lead with a minute to go in the first period.
The scores:
Ateneo 85 – Tiu 29, Al-Hussaini 24, Salamat 14, Austria 7, Reyes 4, Buenafe 2, Nkemakolam 2, Salva 2, Baclao 1, Baldos 0, Long 0.
UST 76 – Cruz 23, Ababou 17, Bautista 12, Allera 7, Fortuna 6, Canlas 3, Cuan 2, Gile 2, Mirza 2, Taylor 2, Camus 0, Fenequito 0.
Quarter scores: 20-11; 38-35; 63-55; 85-76

look a like ni Chris Tui si Mark Bautista ung singer sa myx..
It’s now or never for the Tigers if they want to break in to the final 4.
If they put the Ateneo Blue Eagles especially Tiu and Al-Hussaini on bay last night, probably the Tigers can win the game. But at the cast… CRUZ, ABABOU and BAUSTISTA are the only players in double-digits. Where’s KHASIM MIRZA? I remember last year he’s the best player in the game vs. Ateneo (1st Round), Is JAPS really concerned? Chester Taylor is also missing as well as CANLAS and ALLERA.
Supposed to be the game last night must be a statement game fot the tigers if they want to break in to the final four. The way that they do, it seems that they’re going to the southpole of the tournament.
The game against the Tamarraws this sunday will be another test for the tigers. If they don’t win the game and UE will win the game this saturday, the Tigers will be really out of the picture.
Poor Officiating. I wonder why referees will give technical foul to CANLAS if the intention is get off his feet to Tiu? NABRO and ALMIGHTY Please clean the Officiating!
again, jervy did not receive enough touches in the crucual stages of the game. inaasa masyado ng ust that jervy gets his points on his own, i.e., offensive rebounds and putbacks. he had a lot of shots, yes, but how many of those did he create for himself? bigyan niyo lang kasi ng bola sa baba si jervy. no one in the uaap can guard him.
kawawa naman si canlas. pati coach niya galit sa kanya. namura pa tuloy. oh and by the way, why would the ust gallery cheer “go uste” after your player intentionally tried to hurt another player? hmmm. that was a blatant shot at chris tiu. i commend coach pido for reprimanding canlas for that stupid act. as for the ust crowd, hmmm. wag na nga lang.
Criticism has been hurled at Jervy Cruz for having a “subpar” season. In a few games, he didn’t even score in double figures and/or grab double figures in rebounds. People tend to forget that he’s been nursing injuries since the preseason, and yet he’s had monster stats in more than a few of their games. The problem has really been the inconsistency of the rest of the Tigers, except perhaps for Dylan Ababou and, lately, Clark Bautista. Even Allera’s game has blown hot and cold of late. Can Mirza, Canlas, Taylor, et al. please stand up and help Jervy and Dylan out! Without that needed help, Rabeh, Tiu, Salamat and the rest of the Blue Crew ran roughshod over the Tigers, and other teams will, too. Come on Tigers, gnash your teeth and claw yourselves to respectability before the season ends! The UST faithful are waiting!
@Keen observer
I hope you watched the replay. He kicked Tiu. Even pido was using expletives on Canlas for that.
“I wonder why referees will give technical foul to CANLAS if the intention is get off his feet to Tiu?”
wow. just wow. if your intention is to get your foot off somebody, you will most likely lift it and rest it slowly on an open area. canlas lifted his foot and lammed it against tiu’s calf. as in slammed it. not much of a keen observer after all huh?
@Keen Observer
“I wonder why referees will give technical foul to CANLAS if the intention is get off his feet to Tiu?
Please wash your eyes and wear your eyeglasses. Watch the replay again on why CANLAS was given a technical foul and reprimanded by Pido for his foolish act. There is a difference between resting your foot on an opposing player rather than SLAMMING it on his calf.
Your name should be changed instead to “BIASED UST Keen Observer” since you aren’t keen at all to both sides in my book.

I think Jervy and dylan were tired already. did anyone count the minutes Jervy played? he was only on the bench twice and those were not substantial minutes 1-2 game time minutes. I think fatigue kicked in the fourth. you got to be tired when two people box you out and you still get the rebounds. other Guys need to to step up so that Jervy gets ample rest to finish the game strong.
ust plays game ateneo play sport, bear in mind “no game just sport
@ Keen Observer
My last post should have read “Medyo hindi keen ANG observation mo..”
Battle of for MVP
Rabeh 2 Jervy 0
Chris 2 Jervy 0
Rabeh MVP! Chris Tiu #2. Jervy? hmmmmm #3
kung stas lang ang basis ng mvp, jervy pa rin yan for sure, but if the games won will be a part of the consideration, then rabeh and chris are leading candidates. dlsu stats are spread more evenly kasi kaya parang walang mvp candidate sa kanila. of course i know they could not care less if manggagaling sa kanila yung mvp, championship lang ang habol nila. actually, lahat dapat ganun. pampalasa na lang yung individual awards. ang championship ang ulam
I do believe that JV casio is being overlooked here in my opinion Jervy cruz has a dylan ababou, rabeh al hussaini has chris tiu, ryan buenafe, nonoy baclao, eric salamat and jai reyes. JV casio has an overrated rico maierhofer, a shoot alot miss alot player like bader malabes and BJ walsham. . . and look where they are right now they are number two in the team standings. . . ateneo is understandably number one because of its powerful lineup, ust on the other hand lacks manpower but jervy cruz doesnt know when to score. . . he is always scoring from 1st to 3rd quarter but what is he doing during the last quarter? JV is mr. clutch for de lasalle that makes him valuable.
In my opinion, Cruz is still on the lead against Tiu and Rabeh in the MVP stats. Not to mention that Casio is also firing up and showing good stats in their games. Most of the games of DLSU was won by Casio’s outside shooting and fastbreaks. So, I can’t also set aside Casio in the MVP nominees.
What struck me at yesterday’s game is the blind officiating. I wouldn’t blame Rabeh to react that why, kasi Canlas really intentionally hurt Tiu. If you are watching it in television, it was replayed twice – and even with slow motion. Tapos, technical foul lang? How can a technical flow make Coach Pido infuriated like that? It’s because he knows that Canlas did it on purpose. Bad officiating. Really, really bad.

@U hey! hey! p
its not BJ Walsham its PJ Walsham.
WOW!
SI RICO MAIERHOFER BA, TINGIN NYO PASOK SA MYTHICAL 5?
TINGIN KO DI SIYA MVP, THATS FOR SURE. I’M A DYLAN ABABOU CRITIC, AND I BELIEVE PWEDE SIYA SA MYTH 5.
unfortunately for the uaap, their awards are based almost 90% on stats no matter how they try to put it but if it were based on the player’s true value to the team then i would definitely make it a race between jv casio and chris tiu. jervy has the stats but his team is most likely not going to make it even to the final four and that should count against him. and talent for talent, his team is right there at the top. he has dylan ababou a legitimate mythical 5 contender, and allera and canlas. as for tiu vs rabeh, rabeh has the stats and the scoring but tiu is the leader of his team and he is the glue of ateneo. if you noticed, the only game that they lost was the game where chris played really bad and that game raba had his monster 33-20 game which put him on the map this season. as for raba, he has ahd some games when he didnt do much but they still won so i still think tiu is more crucial. raba is getting his points cause the defense has been focused on tiu, but with raba’s emergence, and if more plays will be called for chris again then his stats are going up again. as for U HEY”s comment on rico, he is actually so crucial to his team because he is like their nonoy baclao (who bails them out on defense, gets rebounds) who can score and energizes the crowd. and not to mention jv also has mangahas and barua. but of course, jv has been superb this season!
…. kung mythical 5 lang ang pinag uusapan
pwede na dun sina hans thiele and elmer espiritu… lakas ng defense nila…
ateneo has lots of good, great and handsome players in their line up tiu, burke, long, and salva, they had great and wonderful crown they had the best school hymn today
nah. espiritu would not qualify for in the top 5 players in the uaap.thile won’t even qualify for the top 20 IMO. cruz, tiu, casio, al-hussaini, and ababou should be top five and, fernandez, asoro, barocca, baclao, and maierhoffer,
“ateneo has lots of good, great and handsome players in their line up tiu, burke, long, and salva, they had great and wonderful crown they had the best school hymn today”
i don’t get it, what was the point again?
ateneo has lots of good, great and handsome players in their line up tiu, burke, long, and salva, they had great and wonderful crowd they had the best school hymn today
gotta agree with you sixthman.. i also believe that the best player today is a toss-up between casio and tiu. they ought to be considered as the mvp for the season. basing it solely on the players’ stats will not do justice since some players (e.g. tiu and casio) don’t put up impressive numbers day in day out, but they still find ways for their team to win. casio deserves it because he makes his teammates better. he had subpar games against weaker teams but then he got his teammates involved. we can prolly attribute some of barua and mangahas’ emergence to jv. as for tiu, he has shown the willingness and capability to know when to take over. he has forced some shots here and there, but for the most part, he has done a good job of deciding when to shoot and when to involve his teammates as well. casio and tiu also do a good job of attracting the defense of opposing teams, therefore paving the way for scoring opportunities for teammates. lastly, they are two of the best clutch hitters in the league, and they shoot a very high percentage from the stripe, almost assuring their teams of points when crucial games call for free throws.
It will take another miracle for UST to win. Parang yung win streak nila nung 2nd round nung Season 69.
@ Tomas U. Santos:
Tiyagaan lang yan, sana nga maging consistent sila… Hay! Let’s be realistic the UST team this Season 71 is DIFFERENT from the 69th Season. GONE are the days that there are Jojo Duncil and Anthony Espiritu hotshots. Dylan, Jervy, Japs, Francis and Mark are the remaining core from that MIRACULOUS UST TEAM of Season 69. Miracle? Sana nga mangyari. But if the UST team will continue to be hot and cold this homestretch, they will bid their final four GOODBYE!
@ Keen Observer:
oh I forgot… Chester Taylor and Mel Gile…
totally agree with sixthman. It is indeed a sad fact that the UAAP bases the criteria for the MVP crown heavily on stats and not on how the player performs. Tiu and Casio are MVP caliber not only because of the points they make, but also because of how they carry their team to victory and how they can boost the morale of their schoolmates.
And yeah, Rico is a superb player but no offense to him, I don’t think he’s MVP material. Well, not yet, at least. He’s still overshadowed by the other big men in the UAAP like Cruz and Al-Hussaini. Maybe next year. He still has a few more things to improve on like rebounding and dominance in the paint.
when was the last time a guard won the mvp? :) if im not mistaken james yap, but before that, who else? recent winners include, arwind santos (2x) rich alvarez (2x) enrico villanueva, jervy cruz, ken bono, and i dont know i cant even remember! basta puro big men! guards naman! hehehe
oo nga, guards naman. Ang kung pwede co-MVP awards for both Casio and Tiu. haha
@ DONNIE DARKO
maierhofer overshadowed by alhussaini? ganun ba talaga? kasi feeling ko mas magaling pa rin si maierhofer. maybe at the present. but historically, maierhofer has more impact. Well lets see. kailangan sila pareho ng Philippine basketball in the future.
ATENEAN,
Well, when it comes to dominance and strength, mas lamang pa ng konti si Al-Hussaini. Both are really good players, pero minsan kasi may tendency si Rico na magchoke e.
ATENEO WILL WIN THE GOLD
to dacanay: father? HAHA!
@ Dacanay
Sana mag dilang angel ka father. hehe
GO LA SALLE!
GO LA SALLE!!!
LA SALLE WILL REIGN SUPREME!
I WAS THE ONE WHO COMMENTED:
GO LA SALLE!!!
LA SALLE WILL REIGN SUPREME!
. . . . . .
That’s how much I love La Salle! I’m willing to use other people’s names just to promote my love for it!
I was the one who first commented GO LA SALLE
I was just too afraid to use my name cause I know ateneo will beat me up.
I was the one that told Sumayao to comment for me “GO LA SALLE LA SALLE WILL REIGN SUPREME” because its totally true and only then I was proud of using my own name
FINE, GO ATENEO!
Guys, make me a palanca.
