St. Clare, PLP Eagles outgun rivals in NAASCU tourney

ST. CLARE College-Caloocan and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay notched big wins in the eighth National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament last August 11, 2008 at the New Era University Gym and University of Manila Gym, respectively.

The Saints crushed University of Makati Hardy Herons, 120-64, while the Eagles from Pasay outplayed Centro Escolar University, 72-64, to join San Sebastian College-Cavite, which defeated newcomers Lyceum of Subic and Informatics, atop the team standings with similar 2-0 win-loss cards.

Veteran coach Jimmy Mariano’s Saints waxed hot in the first quarter and never looked back against UMak, which lost its opening-day encounter against the PLP Eagles last August 8, 2008.

Aries Pariñas, a 6-4 rookie center and former juniors MVP, led St. Clare with 22 points, while Phillip Coronel and Richmond Sibal added 14 and 12, respectively. Reed Nancianceno also scored in double-digits with 11 for the Caloocan outfit.

Santos Moresco paced the 0-2 Hardy Herons, who are mentored by coach Mike Tolentino, with 22 points.

PLP, meanwhile, turned to PJ Biala, point guard Ricky Casulla and Candido Malicaem to bring down the Scorpions of CEU and post their second win in three matches.

Biala scored 18 points, Casulla had 15 and Malicaem added 11 for the Eagles.

Jeric Magno and Jeff Garcia paced the Scorpions with 19 and 14 points, respectively.

In another game over at the UM Gym, newcomer Lyceum of Subic Bay upset the New Era University Hunters, 89-81, behind LA Gapasin’s 27-point explosion.

Forward Roliver Valencia and Richard Velasco chipped in with 25 points between them as the Sharks, coached by former San Beda Red Lion Kerwin McCoy, barged into the win column in just their second game.
