DLSU blows out Fighting Maroons despite sluggish start

DE LA SALLE bucked a sluggish first half before knocking the wind out of University of the Philippines to score an 81-61 rout in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament last August 10, 2008 at the Philsports Arena.

The defending champions, who shot a woeful 38.8 percent from the field, turned up the pressure on defense to tighten its grip on solo second with a 7-2 record.

“We struggled on offense, so what we did was we doubled our efforts on the defensive end and that resulted to a lot of fastbreak baskets for us,” said La Salle coach Franz Pumaren.

DLSU scored 18 points on transition, 12 more than the Fighting Maroons, who were also clobbered on the boards, 39-53.

Forward Rico Maierhofer finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in what was easily another MVP-like performance for him. JV Casio contributed 17 points, six assists and three steals while James Mangahas had 16 markers and
seven boards.

Swingman Peejay Barua joined in the fray and chipped in 10 points off the bench for the Green Archers.

From a slim 34-30 lead at the half, the Green Archers outscored the Maroons, 47-31 in the second half. Maierhofer had nine of his total output in the third period when the Archers started to pull away, 59-48, entering the final quarter.

Mangahas had 13 second-half points while Barua added eight in the fourth period as the Taft outfit outplayed the Maroons in the final 20 minutes.

Despite securing his team’s seventh win, Pumaren is bracing for tougher battles ahead in the second round. “Teams are finished trying to feel their way around. Now it’s time for the tough grind,” said Pumaren, who led De La Salle to a rare four-peat from 1998-2001, the longest since University of Santo Tomas’ own streak from 1993-96.

Only Martin Reyes finished in double-figures for UP with 21 points, 15 of which came from three-point range.

The scores:

De La Salle 81 – Maierhofer 19, Casio 17, Mangahas 16, Barua 10, Walsham 6, Villanueva 5, Revilla 5, Ferdinand 2, Malabes 1, Webb 0, Mendoza 0, Chandumal 0, Bagatsing 0, Lee 0.

UP 61 – Reyes 21, Co 9, Agbayani 9, Sorongon 8, Astorga 4, Sison 4, Lopez 4, Braganza 2, Pajela 0, Marfori 0, dela Victoria 0, Hipolito 0.

Quarter scores: 19-9; 34-30; 59-48; 81-61

its been said time and again: “offense wins games… defense wins championships.” the DLSU defense is getting better with each game. it will be perfect in time for final four!

Basahin mo yung naka sulat na ito sa article: “Now it’s time for the tough grind,â€? said Pumaren, who led De La Salle to a rare four-peat from 1998-2001, the longest since University of Santo Tomas’ own streak from 1993-96.”

    @sbc asa!

    PEACE…ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

well granted na baka naman hindi talaga squatter pero ang playing style nila talagang pang larong kalye. tingnan mo ginawa nila sa dlsu 1st round game, atkins, marko, rico, mangahas, rico ulit, lahat nasaktan. tapos ngayon jankhe and garcia (when he was playing very well)

I guess they’ll be able to pull a championship (or atleast a final four slot) if all the players from other teams either have broken bone or head trauma.

    @morning

    just pointing out facts.

    starcrossed,

I think that’s all bitterness speaking. 110% bitterness. Sorry, pero ganun talaga lumalabas e. All due respect to you. You wouldn’t want to bring yourself way down to that level now, would you? Come on. I think you’re way better than that.

    nike123,

Oo nga, di naman talaga squatter ang UE e, and whoever said that, that’s really uncalled for, I agree.

But what the majority is merely pointing out here is the eerie coincidence that occurred during yesterday’s game wherein another player, this time from NU, was taken out on a gurney, and taken to the hospital due to a bad fall.. The eerie coincidence here is that NU was playing UE, the same team DLSU played against when Simon, Marko, James and Rico where injured.

I bet if it were the other way around, and these injuries happened to teams playing against DLSU you would say something like this, maybe even something worse considering the fact that you are a La Salle hater.

I’m sorry, I’d like to correct myself. That’s WERE, instead of where.

    @ MORNING WOODYco

Basketball is a sport na mahirap maiwasan ang injuries.

    shame…
