SAN Sebastian College-Recoletos seems to be peaking at the right time.

The Stags won their third straight game after a stirring 68-57 drubbing of Philippine Christian University in the 84th NCAA seniors basketball competition last August 6, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.

“It really shows, how my players are [getting] very aggressive starting the second round,” said San Sebastian coach Jorge Gallent, who praised his team’s solid defensive play. “Defense is something we can’t forget. We have to keep it going.”

Gallent was referring to the Stags’ 21 points off of the Dolphins’ 21 turnovers. Center Jason Ballesteros was at the forefront of the defensive stance, blocking eight locks shots and grabbing 17 boards to go along with five points.

“Jason is an athletic big man who loves to defend,” he said. “I’m happy he is listening to us and doing his role.”

Chief gunner Jim Viray, the team’s leading scorer, posted 15 points, while playmaker Franz Delgado scored 10. PBL veterans Gilbert Bulawan and Jimbo Aquino chipped in with nine points apiece as the Stags cruised to a 4-4 record, just a half game back of the last Final Four slot, currently held by Mapua.

The game was close at the break, with Gallent’s wards up only by three, 28-25. Viray then led a third quarter blitz with three baskets to give his squad a 12-point lead at the start of the final quarter.

But the Dolphins continued to bother the Stags and threatened with 2:49 left in the fourth when swingman Leimar Navarro converted a three-point play that pushed the league returnees to within three, 55-52.

“We relaxed in the game, but the boys focused well in the last two-minute mark,” said Gallent.

Delgado answered with a trey and Aquino hit a clutch jumper that gave San Sebastian some breathing space, 60-52, with only 1:42 remaining.

The Dolphins, who were paced by Beau Belga’s 14 points and eight boards, failed to rally and dropped to a league-worst 1-7 record.

The Stags’ prolific free-throw clip helped pull down PCU. They made 18-of-24 shots from the foul line as against the atrocious 10-of-21 clip tallied by their opponents.

The scores:

San Sebastian 68 – Viray 15, Delgado 10, Aquino 9, Bulawan 9, Saquillo 6, Ballesteros 5, Maconocido 4, Raymundo 2, del Rio 2, Najorda 2, Semira 2, Zulueta 2.

PCU 57 – Belga 14, Navarro 11, Arce 10, Amparado 10, Gomez 6, Vidal 3, McCoy 2, Siruma 1, Busa 0, Allen 0, San Pedro 0, Asuncion 0.

Quarter scores: 15-14; 28-25; 46-34; 68-57

    @Grrr!
i know, cant blame him though..
I just hope Arvie bringas will play for the stags senior team next year..
he will be an excellent replacement for jim viray whos in his final playing year in the ncaa.
if that happens, he will team up with his injured brother(already in the seniors line-up but wasnt able to play because of injuries) who will take the center position(also a good replacement for ballesteros)
Then the stags will have a competetive roster for the next season.

  • Grrr! says:

@bola, i agree Arvie must stay with the Stags. Though La salle is already sizing him up…even now. Dilikado.

  • bola says:

Well, lets just leave the recruitment job to coach gallent and staffs’.
Actually, that was what i was thinking about gallent.
Will he be able to recruit good players like coach turo does?
Coach turo seemed like he has an unlimited supply of at least 6’7 guy (including pep moore, de leon who is about 6’9 and also ballesteros to name some)
also during pep moore’s time the was a fil-foreign player who stands at least 6’8 whos reportedly to play for the stags (AND I SAW HIM ROAMING AROUND THE SSCR CAMPUS.) i just dont know what happened to him.
sana lang makakuha sila ng magagaling na players para maganda parin ang laban sa nc’.

  • pusongbaste says:

  • pusongbaste says:

sana talaga makuha nila si arvie…

  • Airborne says:

A wiry 6’6″ guy who played against CSB (logged in 3 minutes in the 4th). Quite a long shot to replace jason, but this kid is still growing.

    WHERE ARE YOU??

hahaha. kawawa naman si Belga. mag-PBL ka na lang Beau. kasi sa PBA, pag nagbungguan kayo ni Enrico Villanueva, rambulan na agad nasa isip mo. hahaha.

  • Gooner4Life says:

I noticed during the game, especially during the 4th quarter, may chance na sana ang PCU makalamang or maka-deadlock man lang at least all thanks to Navarro’s hot fingers. Kaso, nagkalat bigla ang PCU. What would’ve happened if Beau didn’t commit that crucial offensive foul against Baste? Hmmmm….

  • Chief Waka-waka says:

pauwiin niyo na si Beau Belga. liability lang siya.

  • Big J says:

yan si Belga nagtraining yan kay jawo sa ginebra noon bata pa. Pagpasensyahan nya na…..

    UPHR IS NEXT!

  • Grrr! says:

with this development, the battle for the top two places (csjl, sbc and jru) gets interesting as also the scrambling for the fourth and final place on the FF among SSC-R, mit and csb.

  • bola says:

maybe we should edit the title to “fourth straight”
    hehe “joke”
