Upset-minded NU takes a bite out of FEU

NATIONAL University scored its maiden win of the season – and arguably the year’s biggest upset.
The Bulldogs took a huge bite out of Far Eastern University’s stint atop the team standings with a come-from-behind 69-61 in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament last August 3, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.
After trailing by four at the half, NU mounted a huge fightback led by big man Jewel Ponferrada, point guard Jonathan Jahnke and star forward Edwin Asoro. The Bulldogs led by as much as 10, 50-40, in the pivotal third period, and managed to chase down the Tamaraws, who wrestled the lead from the Sampaloc outfit..
“We had certain adjustments. I’m really proud of the boys. Hindi sila sumuko, lumaban pa din sila [They didn’t give up, they kept on fighting],” said NU coach Manny Dandan.
Asoro finished with 14 points, including the game-tying basket while Jahnke split his charities to give the lead back to NU, 62-61.
Jahnke wasn’t finished. He drilled in a backbreaking triple to extend the Bulldog lead to four, 65-61, with only 34 seconds to go.
Dandan attributed the win to the Bulldogs’ hunger, which was very evident in the game.
“The problem is our depth. In the past few games, hindi sila maka-angat angat [They couldn’t pull through]. Then, finally Jewel and Jay [pulled through],” said Dandan.
Asoro also had 10 rebounds, while teammate Raymond Aguilar had the same carom haul and 12 points on top of it.
The Tamaraws lost their first game after four straight victories to drop to 5-2 and a tie with De La Salle University. Benedict Fernandez led FEU with 12 points, but committed crucial turnovers that helped Dandan’s wards mount their comeback.
The departure of big man Robert Kave didn’t help FEU either. The former U-19 Papua New Guinea national team player returned went back home yesterday. Kave was with Mac Baracael when the Tams stalwart was shot by a still unidentified assailant over a week ago.
The scores:
NU 69 – Ponferrada 16, Jahnke 15, Asoro 14, Aguilar 12, Fabula 3, Garcia 3, Tungcul 2, Baloran 2, Catamora 2, dela Cruz 0, Berry 0, Galapon 0, Luy 0.
FEU 61 – Fernandez 12, Knuttel 11, Cervantes 8, Cawaling 8, Barroca 8, Ramos 6, Adolfo 4, Sanga 2, Tanuan 2, Macazo 0, Alisbo 0, Cabagnot 0.
Quarter scores: 12-18, 32-36, 52-51, 69-61

jahnke has fianlly performed according to expectations. finally! he was touted as the best point guard by one of the writers here, i can’t remember who, and all season long he has played below par. NU was due for a good game, malas ng feu sa kanila pa natapat

im afraid reality is coming in to the scene after feu lost baracael and kave in their line-up..
it seems that the spirit they had after the incident with mac is slowly fading..
hopefully the tams can bounce back and regain the spirit and eagerness to win..

malakas naman talaga NU eh. Dapat last year mas nangatan nila ang FEU Tamaraws. They are almost veterans, while the Tams are at their rebuilding process/stage.

We can beat any given game. IT WAS an upset game for NU, so that was understood, still, FEU had won 5 games, beaten Ateneo, UE and the other three. Our games will never be haunted gain by this loss. Our team plays for the shcool and for Baracael’s fast recovery. No harm done. We can definitely rise up on 2nd round. If NU should not be underestimated, neither should WE, FEU TAMARAWS.

beterano lang ang NU sa uaap. but with the game of basketball, hindi newbies ang FEU. masyado lang relax and kumpiyansa yung feu sa game against NU,they took it for granted. surprisingly, NU never gave up. twas really a surprise! ginising lang ang feu, twas a wake up call for them. pakiramdam na nasa langit dahil sa mga panalo. yun nagising dahil sa pagkatalo. mas maganda nga na natalo sila, they’ll come out even more hungrier for wins at the start of the second round. malas lang, matatalo nalang, wala pang kwenta. Gods will! ateneo is their first game, Godbless both teams. Go fight FEU!

mahirap kasi sa mga players like Robert Kave di mo maarok kung seryoso ba sa schooling or basketball or both. it seems guys like these can’t even be called mercenaries. nabaril lang ang kasama kala mo pati sya target kaya umuwi - o baka nga! i don’t mean to be disrespectful, i understand his parents’ concern, pero ito ang classic eksena ng isang batang inutusang bumili ng suka pero nakipaglaro sa kabilang kalye, nang sutsutan at pagalitan ni inay, hangos sa paguwi dahil takot masinturon. sana kung magre-recruit kayo ng players, check the heart and maturity kung ito ba’y mama na o bondying lang. sayang kasi ang pagod, pera at oras.
my heart goes out to NU the perennial underdogs. apart from La Salle, this is the only other UAAP team i root for at hindi masama loob ko kung sila pa tumalo sa amin. i’m also glad Henry Sy took over, so watch out for the big NU recruitment and sports program overhaul.

try to have a son, then send him to afghanistan to play basketball. with that you can test your son’s heart and maturity, then let’s also test if you will not worry. :-)

baldog:
together let’s look at a bigger picture and refrain from myopic stabs at logic. berdeng ubas may be right in ways because it’s not really like sending a son to play basketball in a war-torn country. r.p., your/my motherland, is not. like he wrote, no disrespect meant to the parents if their concerns are real. di rin kasi alam ng karamihan the truth behind kave’s departure. kung target din sya talaga, then by all means fly home. life is more precious than career. siyete lang kasi nasagap ng karamihan like the angles of syndicated game-fixing, love triangle or a woman scorn by the fallen guy. what has kave got to do with it to run for his life? if he’s not involved why leave? o baka bata pa nga si kave, pero hindi naman bondying because he has to live by his parent’s decisions - so very reluctantly he had to go. our assumptions are best confirmed by ferreting out the truth kung alam nyo please share it. it’s just a small story though - anyway you’re both right.

FEU as good as a team they are, will not be able to reach the UAAP Finals. Sure, they got the heart and the inspiration to do so, but it takes much more than that to become a championship caliber team. It takes experience to have the poise needed in every game. It also takes firepower to stop teams like Ateneo, La Salle and UST in the Final 4. Finally, it takes endurance to maintain a good spot in the team standings in the home stretch of the elims. Honestly, FEU doesn’t have those qualities.
