Clutch Blue Eagles claw past UST, grab solo lead

ICE water ran through Ateneo de Manila University’s veins against one of the country’s oldest academic institutions.

The Blue Eagles pulled through when it mattered the most and carved out a 64-57 triumph over University of Santo Tomas to give them the solo lead at the end of the first round of eliminations of the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament last August 3, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Point guard Jai Reyes’ trey with 6:49 left in the third quarter gave the Blue Eagles their biggest lead, 39-29. And when the Tigers clawed their way back to a 54-52 lead thanks to back-to-back Khasim Mirza treys, the playmaker from Ateneo de Manila High School capped off a furious 9-0 run with a triple of his own with just 24 seconds left in the game.

Ateneo coach Norman Black said Reyes’ timely baskets underscored the squad’s tenacity on the defensive end, especially in the endgame.

“We just got back from what gave us a good start and that is playing good defense. We were beaten off the boards, but we made some good stops down the stretch and that was the most important thing,” said Black, whose wards improved to 6-1.

The Blue Eagles display a balanced attack against the Growling Tigers, with Rabeh Al-Hussaini leading the way with 17 points. Chris Tiu had 14, Ryan Buenafe added 12 and Reyes chipped in with 10.

Ex-West Negros College Mustang Nonoy Baclao had another splendid game as well, registering four blocks to go along with 11 rebounds.

All in all, Ateneo held the Tigers to just 26 percent from the field despite being outrebounded, 58-42.

Forward Dylan Ababou led UST, which dropped to 3-4, with 15 points. Big man Jervy Cruz was held to just eight points, and forced to take medium-range jumpers in lieu of his power game on the low block.

The scores:

Ateneo 64 – Al-Hussaini 17, Tiu 14, Buenafe 12, Reyes 10, Salamat 3, Baldos 2, Baclao 2, Nkemakolam 2, Long 1, Salva 1, Escueta 0, Austria 0.

UST 57 – Ababou 15, Allera 13, Cruz 8, Mirza 8, Fortuna 6, Bautista 3, Camus 2, Canlas 2, Fenequito 0, Gile 0.

Quarterscores: 13-12; 29-25; 49-45; 64-57

Credit the Blue Eagle’s defense on Jervy Cruz yesterday..They really shut him down..Nonoy Baclao was a monster on defense

    Second round na!

    Animo La Salle!

  • NURSING, FEU says:

Baclao played his game yesterday. Though I was hoping that UST will win, I expected that ADMU will grab this game with a 6-1 round 1 finish. Still, a lot of things can happen. All the rumors and speculations about Tiu should be blamed on dirty commissioning of UAAP. This is becoming dirtier and in th end the teams not in avor will be just left on a murkier shadow.

  • yellow_we says:

Although we out rebounded the Eagles, 56-40, they shot better at 40% in the field against UST’s 27%. Unexpectedly, Mark and CB5 only had one basket each. It appeared CB5 didn’t have the magic in his hands last night, hitting only 1 out of 4 in the 3pt land. I thought it will be a shooting spree between him or Francis and Chris Tiu but the awesome defense of the two squads didn’t materialize this. We had a great run at the half of the last quarter courtesy of Mirza’s 5 straight points. But we have ran out of gas after that. Ateneo did a good defense to our big men in the last minutes of the game, managed to control Dylan and Jervy from scoring inside the paint which kept the Tigers miserably taking the shots outside instead. All in all, it was a good game although as expected, NABRO’s officiating last night was as bad as it can get. I heard BBB did the GO USTE beat when everyone started to leave the coliseum so I guess that’s a good consolation – sign of a respect! ;)

OT: Tadhana nga naman o, ipinaghiganti ng NU ang FEU para sa ATENEO since the latter got their only lost from FEU. Ang ATENEO naman ipinaghiganti and UST para sa NU, dahil tinambakan ng UST and NU last Thursday, Sweet naman nila! ;)

The 2nd round should be a different story for the tigers. There are reports that Allen Maliksi might be given more playing time coming the final elims round and Japs will be back 100%! 3 P’s paren! PRIDE, PUSO, PALABAN! Make it 4 P..PANALO!!! ;D I’m expecting Tigers will give it out further in the next round.

..We still believe, VIVA SANTO TOMAS!! :)

BBB also did the same thing last year after the step ladder game vs UST. Unfortunately for UST, they took it as an insult, and played a DLSU beat. BBB then played a UP beat to silence the UST band hehe

  • yellow_we says:

nah.. I think they were just playing around back then. I know BBB and YJs are friends. There are many instances I’ve seen their members hanging around together whether during games or simple gatherings.

  • wawawiwa says:

hahaha. naalala ko nga yun. nag away pa nga yung ibang taga uste and the members of the yjs kasi they didn’t like how the yjs responded. good times. some of the ust students and alumni were visibly pissed when the yjs responed with the dlsu beats. pero oks lang tameme naman sila sa unibersidad. seriously, those were good times

  • Marnel tuble says:

I know a lot of people who are overly excited about the prospect of an AdMU-FEU Final Games. These are mostly Binondo and Makati-based entrepreneurs who are probably looking for an offshoot to the usually overrated Ateneo-La Salle match which, obviously, is the greatest crowd drawer in Philippine sports if we base it on the gate ticket receipts within the last 5 or so years. Well, the current standings shows that FEU, DLSU and AdMU are almost sure of making it to the Final Four! Best wishes to all stakeholders hehehe!

  • LDC says:

    Marnel tuble,

What makes you say a DLSU-AdMU match is “overrated?”

  • The Dont Mind says:

    Dont Mind Me

But it was Ateneo’s D (spear headed by Baclao) and Allera’s BS decisions that killed UST.

Baclao slew Cruz’s game with help D and demoralized slashers with his block (damn. from the baseline to almost the half court). I guess, that’s why ADMU got Baclao, for D. Good to see that Eric (Salamat)was cleared to play.

Then Allera, with his usual self killed, brought UST down by himself. Sure, he got 1x points. but hey, look at how many times he took bad shot, made bad decisions. Parang gusto nyang mg MVP or kahit champ of the day sa game. I’m a proud Tomasino, but what happened yesterday was BS.

    —–

Yesterday’s officiating was well, consistently inconsistent. Buenafe was given a warning for trashtalking, but (Paul) Lee automatically was slapped a T for the same offence. I also question the flagrant foul that was given to Camus. Come on, Camus went for the ball, he slapped Tiu’s hand in mid air. There was no intent of injuring the guy. Ababou’s offensive foul on Bacon was questionable because, ababou is doing that move even last year, and this was the first time he got called for it.

@WAWAWIWA, now I can recall the reason why. If I’m not mistaken, there were some newbies in the cast of YJs then and maybe not knowledgeable how USTYJ and BBB have been friends. I heard some co-Thomasians and YJ seniors yell w/ disappointment of such act but well.. probably they just merely playing around. Sure Unibersidad ng Pilipinas beat made them shut up. Hehe..

  • Tomas U. Santos says:

Congrats ADMU! I hate to say this but UST, at this point, does not have what it takes to beat the top teams. They need to start the 2nd round well though and start beating teams convincingly or else Pido’s wards may kiss the final 4 goodbye. Still, we believe. He have to.

  • yellow_we says:

@ The Don’t Mind.. I have to agree with you. If there’s anything that is evident in this game and proven where eagles is best at, it has to be their defense. Look how they controlled Jervy, even he dominated the boards, he hardly can’t get easy baskets but only managed to do perimeter jumpers. We sorely miss the services of Japs here who can deliver the drop passes to him which will make Jervy score easier inside the paint. The post up jumpers doesn’t really work for him that well. As reported, it will take another week before Japs can play again so he might miss the ADU game coming this Saturday. In my observation, Jervy has not yet shown his usual A-game. Dylan stepped up even more and he could even be the best candidate for this year’s MvP as he leads the league in the scoring department (as well as TO’s sad to note). Francis on the other hand, was really tasked and given the authority to shoot outside. It’s his assignment since Anthony left. Although I have to agree that there are at times, he should be wiser in his decisions taking the shots. Minsan kase he has this “tira ng tira” attitude. The same goes with CB5. But every game is a venue for improvement. Chillax lang tayo, take game one at a time coming the final elims round. Difference is, we can no longer accept defeat, and have to treat each game like a do-or-die scenario. I think, the safest we can land in Final Four is to have at least 8-6 record. Good luck Tigers!

  • yellow_we says:

@ Chief Waka-Waka, sure! magsilbing anghel ka sana! hehe.. Speaking of, I’m eating quarter pounder now. Yum!

  • wawawiwa says:

simple lang naman ang sagot para sa uste e. bigyna niyo lang ng bola si jervy sa baba. lahat ng play padaan niyo sa kanya. jervy will be more than a handful for any defender in the uaap. kahit si rabeh hindi kakayanin si jervy one-on-one. and when the help D comes, jervy could kick the ball out to ust shooters. kaso parang first option nila lagi yung tres. yung at yun ang hinahanap kaya madaling bantayan. ust will beat Nu, adu, and up with pure outside shooting but they won’t be able to touch the upper four teams if jervy isn’t his normal 20-15 self

  • Grrr! says:

this rabeh is like a genie unleashed form the bottle. awesome. he used to stiff and wooden in his plays before but now has the guts to assert himself. he’s like a diesel getting warmer every game. he’ll be at his peak during the finals. i believe the eagles can go all the way this year. of course, salva, the extarordinary buneafe, tiu and the rest may be of some help….

  • congrats ateneo blue eagles 4 winning last sunday6-1 im an avid fan of uaap most especially the ateneo blue eagles everybody did a good job i hope u win this season 71!!!!grabeh ang effort nla n chris, jai rabeh, ryan, yuri, eric, nonoy and all the rest of the team i always pray 2 god that this season ur team will win!!!!!!!!take care n god bless all!!!! wer s ford pla!!!!

  • The Dont Mind says:

    @wawawiwa
malakas sa malakas si jervy pero mahihirapan siya kay Baclao. mabagal ang reaction time ni rabeh kaya nakakajump shot (with a smile pa) si jervy. but gawin nya yung kay baclao at siguradong piso na un.

but i’ll give credit to rabeh. he improved ALOT.

    @yellow_we
with a 3-4 card, mistakes are unforgivable. come one, we should have won 3 games. we lost those games because of UST’s own doing. The thing with Badong, irritates me. think about this, for three games running, he would get the offensive rebound – run outside the arc then shoot a three! come on. AE8 aint like that. he should have moved the ball around, first. ito ang dahilan kung bakit si jervy limited din ang touches. i do hope we bounce back, big time. second round na. i hope there is time for improvement, since i do believe that DLSU is a 2nd round team too.

nakakatawa si Buenafe, kamukha ni Jimmy Santos. (lol. wala lang)

  • DeViLmInE says:

    @ The Don’t Mind
    nahalata mo rin? wahahahahahha

  • rin says:

Ayos si Baclao. 4 blocks? Imagine the players whom he blocked – mas malaki pa yata sa kanya!

Second round will much more exciting~!

  • go_Uste says:

I think UST will go up to no. 3/4..Take note UST is a slow starter and pick up their games on the 2nd round since Pido handle it.. With the healthy lineup coming 2nd round, japs will be back w/ hunnger, allen maliksi will now play and surely have a big impact to the team and the fully recovery of jervy and dylan from off season injury will make the tigers climb up to the top..

    Viva Santo Tomas!

  • yellow_we says:

@ The Don’t Mind, absolutely! Losing is not an option. Second round is an opportunity for the Tigers to step up and show everyone that this team is also capable of winning. Like go_Uste stated, we don’t usually start strong. But we get our rhythm and we are at our best in the finals elims round. Wag lang sana talaga kapusin. We haven’t beaten yet the top 4 teams and this 2nd round should serve as a payback! I’m expecting Jervy, Japs, Chester, Mark and Francis to give it all since this will be their final season. As quoted by Pido, “Patay kung Patay!”.Parang katipunero lang. Hehe. I’m also expecting all out support from Thomasian community..mga Alumni Labas!!! :p

  • mig alvarez enriquez says:

hahaha, tagal na yung issue about the BBB and YJ tapos nabalik ulit? hehehe. di natameme ang YJ, di naman YJ at UP pep magkalaban eh, Salinggawi at UP pep. haha! natawa na lang nga sila eh.

  • wawawiwa says:

jervy could use his wide frame against baclao. if jervy has the ball deep, kahit si baclao di na maaabot yun. tapos madalas di naman si baclao ang bantay niya e. noy was busy with dylan and pretty much every tiger who drove to the paint. jervy should have been given the ball down low against rabeh, jobe, and baldos in the early going. if jervy assestred himself and dominated the game from inside, the defense of ateneo will have to sag down, who knows, he may have even gotten rabeh and noy in foul trouble. pagkatapos nun, luluwag na yung depensa sa labas kaya may chance na yung shooters to do their damage. kaso umpisa pa lang puro long shot na yung tinitira nila. zero points nung first half inside the paint is appaling. di pa ako nakarinig ng ganung stat ever. specially when that team’s best player and the league mvp plays at center.

  • The Dont Mind says:

    @devilmine

anong nahalata? na kamukha ni Buenafe si Jimmy Santos? hahaha kung ito nga, napansin ko lang yan nung nakasalubong ko siya sa katips. amf.

    @wawawiwa

    @ yellow_we/ other tomasinos
slow starter nga ang USTe PERO we should have won more games than 3! alam nyo yun. wag na tayong magpalusot. sayang din kasi. kung sa standings kapusin tayo ng 1 laro para sa F4?! eh di babalikan din natin yung mga larong DAPAT nanalo tayo.

pero sabi nga ni Pido PRIDE PUSO PALABAN :)

  • DeViLmInE says:

    @ The Dont Mind
uu…yan nga younger version lang siya..hahaha

  • Chief Waka-waka says:

PRIDE PUSO PALABAN at PA-BURGER naman kapag manalo pa kayo ng marami sa second round

  • yellow_we says:

@The Don’t Mind, I know how you feel. I didn’t expect a 3-4 finish in the first round too. But hey, The Tigers had a good fight though against these top teams. None of them won by a plus 10 margin kaya I still believe na we can still beat them. Lessons learned, new journey in round 2. I’m hoping for a different story coming the 2nd round. Allen will be given more minutes and Japs will play again which brings back our offensive core in a high note. Too much expectations will surely put pressure to Tigers especially to our veterans. But eventually this pressure will be their toughest enemy and will put themselves to test challenging them. I know we still can, because we are the tigers, the mighty mighty tigers.. ok, enough of the cheering stuff.. Let’s move on, next game is on Sat against the Falcons, we should not let them soar high.

Prediction: Tigers at 4-4, no overtime!! (sana di magkamali!)

    ..Viva Santo Tomas!!!

  • virgilio says:

ateneo grabbed solo place!!! haha di magpapatalo ang la salle at FEU if ever!! we hope that la salle ateneo in the finals.

  • lavish says:

i am no blue eagle fan but after i saw the game of Ateneo against the UST Tigers, this i must say….for a coach who is from the oldest Catholic University in the Philippines, it is never nice to see Jarencio so unsportsmanlike and pikon.

Last year, Mrs. Francisco (UST UAAO Board rep)stressed that the UAAP is a sport and everyone should be “Sport”. She should have a one on one talk with Jarencio to remind him this.
