Fighting Maroons score win no. 2 against sluggish Adamson

FOR awhile, it seemed like a second win for the University of the Philippines wouldn’t come this year.
That wouldn’t be the case as the Fighting Maroons put one over Adamson University, 76-68, in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament last August 2, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Jay Agbayani played a monster game, finishing with 20 points and eight rebounds while Mark Lopez tallied a personal-high 11 markers on top of nine boards for the Maroons.
Off-guard Martin Reyes struck one from beyond the arc with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter, igniting a 9-1 binge highlighted also by another triple from Lopez. That enabled UP to turn a 58-59 deficit into a 67-60 lead.
Agbayani then canned two free throws off an elbow foul by Falcons center Mike Galinato to give UP a comfortable 69-62 advantage.
“The boys showed a lot of poise, especially in the final quarter. Grabe si Jay [Agbayani], our team captain who is our heart and soul [Jay was unbelievable]. His leadership lifted us up, a jubilant UP coach Aboy Castro said after the win.
“We hope to show the same intensity in the second round. Baka sakali maka-score pa [We just might score another win]. But we know how tough the games are in the UAAP, especially cause most of the teams have really prepared for this season, added Castro.
The Maroons thus tied their victims with a 2-5 win-loss slate. Curiously, both of UP’s wins have come from games at the Big Dome.
Reyes and Woody Co added 15 points apiece for the Maroons, who successfully put together a balanced scoring attack despite the absence of point guard Mike Gamboa, who was nursing a flu.
Jerick Cañada and Janus Lozada both topscored for Adamson with 16 markers.
The scores:
UP 76 – Agbayani 20, Co 15, Reyes 15, Lopez 11, Astorga 8, Sorongon 4, Marfori 2, Braganza 1, Sison 0, de Asis 0, Hipolito 0.
Adamson 68 – Lozada 16, Cañada 16, Colina 15, Galinato 10, Nuyles 3, Gonzalgo 3, Santos 2, Yambot 2, Agustin 1, Olalia 0, Margallo 0, Gorospe 0.
Quarter scores: 20-20; 43-33; 55-55; 76-68

good job maroons!
nice game, guys. :)
UP Fight! :D
Good win for the maroons! Just keep doing that consistently and they’ll spring up some surprises in the second rouns. Same for the falcons, with their big size and good conditioning, they really need to want to win more games. They actually play better when they start to run. Deliberate half court basketball must be sparingly used
congrats to maroons for their second no nonsense victory.
ACSAT? NCRAA kayo diba? dapat isanib nalang kayo sa NCAA.
Good for UP!
nagcheer ako nun for UP even though im from UE!! heheh!!
God bless the Fighting Maroons! Win #2 is sweet, and
hopes for more, on the long road back from dismal seasons of the past. You so called Maroon faithful, do not let down after terrible losses, as it is part of the growing pains and rebuilding. Take pride in this teams efforts, and give Coach Aboy the time and respect he deserves. His players believe in him, and
this is not an overnight thing he is developing.
Keep the faith brothers and sisters!
