FEU ends Ateneo’s undefeated run

THERE won’t be a 14-game sweep of the elimination round this season.

Far Eastern University ended Ateneo de Manila’s quest to emulate the 2007 University of the East Red Warriors after scoring a come-from-behind 72-66 win in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament last July 31, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.

FEU displayed remarkable endgame poise and leaned on the heroics of forward Aldrech Ramos and slotman Reil Cervantes to hand Ateneo its first loss and in the process share the top post together with its victims and defending champion De La Salle University at 5-1.

In doing so, the Tamaraws also rendered Ateneo big man Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s career-high 33 points academic. The ex-Philippine Christian University Baby Dolphin’s output was the highest since Adamson slotman Kenneth Bono recorded the same output in the elimination round two years ago.

“My big men struggle every time they face Ateneo because of Al-Hussaini. But in the endgame, we able to stop them, said FEU coach Glen Capacio.

Al-Hussaini missed a crucial short jumper, which almost extend the Eagles’ 66-65 lead entering the final minute. Ramos, who had 12 points, scored the go-ahead jumper in the ensuing play to give FEU a 67-66 lead with 47 ticks to go.

FEU’s solid defense then prevented Chris Tiu from scoring the much-needed basket in the pivotal seconds, which cost Ateneo the game.

Asked if Mac Baracael, FEU’s fallen forward, was still the catalyst of the team’s strong play, Capacio said: “I don’t know what it is. Maybe it is the desire and the heart of the players who are working now.

The Tamaraws have won two straight games since Baracael was shot by a still unknown assailant a week ago. According to Capacio, center Robert Kave has decided to leave the team to return to Papua New Guinea tomorrow.

Kave was with Baracael and Ron Cabagnot when the incident happened outside the FEU Gym along Morayta.

The Tams, despite not finding any answers to Al-Hussaini’s onslaught, still managed to claw back into the game thanks to solid guard play.

After Al-Hussaini scored on two free throws to hand the Blue Eagles a 60-57 lead at the 4:53 mark, FEU guards Andy Barroca and Benedict Fernandez combined to move FEU to move within a basket at 65-66, with 1:21 left.

The loss was painful, especially for the Katipunan faithful, who were celebrating the feast day of the founder of the Jesuit order, St. Ignatius. Ateneo seemed to have the game under control after erecting a 56-46 lead early in the fourth, where Al-Hussaini looked unstoppable in the shaded lane.

Reil Cervantes, who led the Tams with 14 points and 13 rebounds, put the finishing touches on his squad’s win with a two-handed slam in the dying seconds of the ballgame.

The scores:

FEU 72 – Cervantes 14, Fernandez 12, Ramos 12, Barroca 11, Sanga 7, Cawaling 5, Adolfo 4, Alisbo 3, Tanuan 2, Macazo 0, Kave 0.

Ateneo 66 – Al-Hussaini 33, Baclao 8, Tiu 7, Salamat 7, Buenafe 4, Reyes 3, Baldos 2, Long 2, Salva 0, Burke 0, Austria 0, Nkemakolam 0, Escueta 0.

Quarter Scores: 18-21; 31-36; 46-55; 72-66

  • wah says:

    does anyone know what happened to eric salamat? how come he didnt play in the second half anymore? if ever he’s injured, is it serious?

  • yellow_we says:

    FEU is really deadly at crucial last minutes and they have proven that again earlier in this game. There was no “Chris Tiu Show” and the TAMS’ defense controlled Al-Hussaini in the final quarter. Kudos to TAMS!

    @wah, as reported, he had a broken jaw and was rushed to the hospital.

  • xd says:

    bakit kulang ng two points total scores ng mga players sa final score ng team feu..hehe

  • blue chips says:

    ok lang matalo sa FEU they’re all humble unlike MR. ATAYDE’s squad (dlrt), bawi nalang next game, di naman kelangan ng 14-0 para mapantayan ginawa ng UE, congrat’s sa FEU.

    One Big Fight!!!

  • La says:

    Go Fight Tamaraws!

  • BEWARE: says:

    mahirap din pagmalapit na finals, alam naman natin na ang NABRO lasallian ang employer nyan, napupunta sa dlrt’s side nagbabago sila ng anyo just like waht happened last season.

    TAENISTA -> SORE LOSERS!
    SA LA SALLE NA NAMAN BINABALING ANG INIS NILA SA PAGKATALO NILA SA FEU!

    GROW UP!

  • chippy blue says:

    go ateneo!! bawi na lng.. anyway final four is another story…

    @talunan
    grow up??! why don’t you say that to yourself..
    look at your comment.. duh?!?!

  • Charlie says:

    Rabeh Al-Hussaini is on track to being named a mythical team member for the first time in his UAAP career. The once-timid and frustratingly passive big man is now asserting himself and showing both poise and strength, with an array of finesse and power moves. Being properly set up by Austria and the other Ateneo guards, Rabeh can score 20 pts every game from hereon. However, the Ateneo backcourt must also produce more to ensure victory. Chris Tiu is entitled to a bad game here and there. The Ateneo faithful wish he snaps back to form quickly, especially since Salamat may see some time off due to the broken jaw. Buenafe, curiously, is showing his rookie tendencies after having already played a few games acting like a veteran. ADMU needs him to step up, too.

    FEU played a brilliant game, hanging around just enough to make a run at the end and pull it off. They’re a bunch of athletic runners, jumpers and shooters, always with a chance to get a victory. Cervantes is a beast on offense and defense. For those who did not believe FEU would make the Final Four (including myself), it’s time to start rethinking. Time will tell. Another good game in a great season so far…even with this bunch of referees around.

    a team beat a player. parang pelikula yung laban. nanalo ang dapat manalo. I just feel bitter. siniko si Salamat. walang call.

  • bball fan says:

    Ben Fernandez reminds me of Denok Miranda with his array of pull-up jumpers and slashes. Their run has been fueled by their emotions aside from their athelticism. The win will surely boost their confidence going into the 2nd round.

  • animoooo says:

    Teka, teka, sa pagkakaalam ko, FEU vs. Ateneo to’. Bakit biglang nadamay La salle? nanahimik kami dito bigla nalang madadamay.

    Chaka Ateneans, wag niyo na kayang patulan yung mga nangaasar sainyo. it only shows na you guys are a a bunch of sore losers.

  • dP says:

    HAHAHA!!!great game FEU!!! asan na yabang ng ateneo?

  • wawawiwa says:

    mad props to feu. that was insiped basketball. ateneo dominated the inside and feu did the same from the outside. ateneo sorely missed salamat’s defense and slashing as buenafe and tiu were nowhere to be seen. props to rabeh for a great game. this is hsaping up to be a really good season. ateneo beats dlsu, dlsu beats feu, then feu beats ateneo, so they rightfully belong in the top 3. feu has the easiest last game. while ateneo and dlsu have ust and ue to deal with. again, congrats to the tams. you showed that team effort will always beat individual brillance

  • Grrr! says:

    a reality check for two frontrunners, first letran, now ateneo.

    the good news (or bad depending)is that Rabeh the terrorist is gaining strength – yes terrorist for he now strikes terror in the hearts of the opponents – sayang lang the rest of the team didn’t rise up to the occasion — the tamarraws’ on an emotional high, and you need 200% effort to beat that team the way it is going.

    with rabeh around, you don’t need an import from nigeria to win games, an import form arabia will do likewise.

  • mac1 says:

    Blue should have won that game. buckled in the last 2 minutes. Black could have called a better game.

  • Charlie says:

    mac1: Many friends texted last night complaining about how normal black coaches and blaming him for yesterday’s loss. Black has won championships and guided his teams to good records throughout his career. The luck of having good players, perhaps? But I agree that sometimes, his adjustments aren’t fast enough, if at all, and his strategy may backfire. Out of sheer curiosity, what’s your answer to how he could have called a better game yesterday?

  • Fabilioh! says:

    i have to give credit to the tams.. they played with a lot of heart, clawing back from down 10 to pull off the win. they made me eat my words. rabeh played a monster game, unfortunately the rest of the eagles couldn’t get their games going in the 4th. congratulations to feu for a well-deserved win. we’ll get you in the next round. ;)

    i’m concerned about the status of eric salamat. does anyone have news regarding the extent of his injury?

  • Grrr! says:

    remember that overtime third game in the UST ADMU finals, Black was in a daze in the final seconds and his instructions confused…need i say more

  • bball fan says:

    During the 1st game against La salle, Black was brilliant in his guard rotation especially when he switched offensive and defensive guards Salamat/Reyes and Escueta to cover Casio. Yesterday he may have been caught off-guard by the loss of Salamat to injury and was left with Reyes & Austria in the dying seconds. One can’t help but second guess Black because Ateneo has so many guards capable of stepping up any game day. Even Long could not get playing time in the dying seconds. Go figure.

  • baldog says:

    congrats FEU tams!!! i just hope they can carry this momentum until the end… wonderin who will be the top 2 team as we really cannot say this early (im just being excited).

    top 2 spot is still up for grabs by (in no particular order) UST, ADMU, FEU, DLSU, UE.

  • Fabilioh! says:

    @Charlie
    i think you have to consider that norman black spent most of his glorious coaching career in the PBA (with smb, mobiline, pop cola and sta.lucia), so could it be that his coaching tendencies are more suited in the deliberate type of bball in the pro-league instead of the gung-ho/fast-paced style in the amateurs? i don’t know, just thinking out loud here.

    @bball fan
    i was about to say the same thing. why did he keep austria on the floor in the last minutes of the game? i mean, he could have gone with a combination of jai/kirk in the backcourt; heck he could’ve even inserted yuri there, but bacon?! you gotta be kidding me.

  • spectator of some sort says:

    yay!

  • misSy says:

    Congrats to FEU!
    im just wondrin wat was baclao & cervantes’ business wen they were talking seriously aftr the game, (it was not caught n tv). at frst i thought they were arguing bcoz they had serious faces but eventually they ended up the conversation with a hug..

  • pinjez says:

    @missy
    yah, i saw that too, i’m wondering what happen out there but i can’t see it really because im at the upper b section of araneta but then i saw them hugging after a long face-to-face talk..hmmmmm..congrats to the feu-tamaraws for pulling a big game, a team can beat a one good, “monster” player

    ONE TEAM FOR MAC BARRACAEL!^_^

  • go MAC says:

    cervantes, cawaling and alisbo were baclao’s friends during high school days in visayas… alisbo was baclao’s teammate in west negros college

  • wawawiwa says:

    i actually thought black did a nice job when he inserted buanafe then he posted up barroca nd scored. and yes, the lack of salamat did affect black’s rotation add to that yuri still isn’t playing 100% so that makes it tougher for black, ps. i am not making excuses. fey deafeated the eagles, plain and simple. i’m just trying to figure out the difference in black’s guard rotation in the game against dlsu and the game yesterday.

  • WHATEVER! says:

    @talunan

    OBF!!! haha!

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    Maybe if Rabah (or Rabeh) made the mythical 5, Halfbro CARLO SHARMA MIGHT PURSUADE HIM TO TURN PRO. RABAH HAS HEIGHT AND SKILL TO GO FAR IN HIS BASKETBALL CAREER & WITH COACH YENG GUIAO, OH MAN

  • baldog says:

    @go MAC
    i thought cawaling is from cagayan de oro (mindanao)?

  • bball fan says:

    me 2 years pa si Rabeh? If that’s the case he’s got plenty of time to dominate. Scary thought.

  • wawawiwa says:

    last year na ni rabeh next year.

  • MACmac_karateKID says:

    rabeh is a great player but not as good as maierhofer and jervy cruz
    rabeh+arao= rico
    rabeh+arao+baclao= jervy

  • De Ocampo Cobra says:

    Oh My?! Ryan Buenafe is strugling big time. From 17 points against the Fayting Maroons, suddenly plummeting to 3 points against NU and 2 points against FEU. Oh no, what might manny pangilinan be thinking right now?

  • ian says:

    As for the incident between Baclao and Cervantes after the game. We’ll Baclao was a little mad with Reil for that two-handed slam he did in the end knowing that the game was all but finished. For Noy, it could have been a little salt in the wound as I heard him saying he didnt have to do that (in tagalog of course). But in Reil’s defense, he deserves a little bit of leeway along with his teammates if they want to celebrate given the stressfull week they’ve had. If the situation was different, I could say it was not needed. It was basically an intense chat between the friends. I couldnt exactly decipher what they were saying because they started speaking Visayan afterwards. Were happy with the win but challenges are still coming with Robert Kave leaving tomorrow. Regardless, Mac’s health is still the one we continue to pray for and I hope that this victory helps boolster his spirits.

    Charge Tamaraws!

  • mac1 says:

    @charlie sorry couldnt respond earlier. I share the same comments with fabiloh questioning combinations. see below:

    Plus no more time out left with 2 mins to go.

  • martian says:

    @Fabilioh!

    dude, i told you FEU had a good chance of an upset! hehehe emotions really fueled their run to the top.

  • marquis says:

    I watched the game and man, Norman Black’s rotation was bad. Oh well…

    Great UAAP moment after the game wherein a chant of “Mac Baracael” occurred in both Ateneo and FEU sides post-game.
