DEFENDING champion De La Salle University found an error prone University of the Philippines an easy prey, posting a lopsided 82-60 triumph for its fifth straight win in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament last July 26, 2008 at the Philsports Arena.
The Maroons, the league’s most error-prone squad averaging 22 turnovers per game, were simply no match for the Green Archers.
All 15 players fielded in by coach Franz Pumaren scored for La Salle, with forward James Mangahas leading the way with 16 points.
An easy win? Pumaren didn’t think so.
”They gave us a good fight in the first few minutes of the match, although we were able to hold them down in the second period,’ said Pumaren, whose wards forced the Fighting Maroons to 22 turnovers, which resulted in 16 turnover points.
“James played a great game today because he was not in foul trouble. In our previous game, he committed several useless fouls, but he was focused today. This win is a big one for us, I was able to experiment more and we can use that in the long run.
The win put the Archers in sole possession of second place, improving their record to 5-1. The victory likewise is a fitting preparation for their duel with University of the East, a team DLSU failed to defeat last year.
“They’re a different UE team right now.’ They’re more mature and more determined to beat us now,â€? said Pumaren.
The Fighting Maroons were able to give the Archers a good fight until the final three minutes of the first period. When DLSU began pressuring the UP ballhandlers, it was able to make some headway.
Mangahas’ triple in the 3:40 mark of the second period gave the Archers their first sizeable lead, 31-17. From there, this year’s hosts couldn’t get any closer.
It turned out to be a blowout for the Green Archers, who forced coach Aboy Castro’s side into committing a series of turnovers in the fourth quarter. Back-to-back baskets by JV Casio gave the Archers their biggest lead of the game, 74-48, with 3:20 left.
The loss was the fifth straight in six games for the Fighting Maroons, who began the year by defeating the NU Bulldogs on opening weekend.
Woody Co paced UP with 22 points, including 19 in the first half. Unfortunately for his squad, he was the only player to score in double-figures.
The scores:
DLSU 82 – Mangahas 16, Maierhofer 14, Bagatsing 10, Barua 8, Casio 7, Webb 6, Malabes 6, Lee 4, Walsham 2, Villanueva 2, Chandumal 2, Atkins 2, Ferdinand 1, Mendoza 1, Batricevic 1.
UP 60 – Co 22, de Asis 9, Agbayani 8, Braganza 6, Gamboa 5, Reyes 4, Astorga 2, Maniego 2, Sorongon 2, Fortu 0, Sison 0, Marfori 0, dela Victoria 0, Hipolito 0.
Quarter scores: 17-10; 37-29; 65-45; 82-60

please think before you make such comments. first of all, not everything that you see on tv is exactly like the real thing the “protesters” that you say are not even one percent of the whole poplation of UP students/faculty/staff.
you would really think that the taxpayers money is better off allocated in the funds for the players rather than in more cause oriented stuffs. i dont know about other schools but UP allocates their very small resources to more important matters rather than to their basketball team.
i dont mean that the UP administration shouldnt give any more funds to the teams but i they are actually allocating it to other departments that will help our society in the future.
so you guys would rather think more about basketball and the future of the players and team rather than the future of our society.
well that just says a lot.
kaya hindi tayo umuunlad dahil sa pagiisip ninyong ganyan.
