La Salle too much for the Falcons! Plus other tidbits
1,700 Views | 57 Comments
Adamson University, fresh from a big upset win over the UE Red Warriors, could not find the same intensity against the DLSU Green Archers. The Soaring Falcons fell prey to the Green Archers 76-61. La Salle now holds solo 2nd place with their 4th straight win.
Rookie Maui Villanueva came on strong as he shot, rebounded and played a great all-around game for La Salle. Rico Maierhofer, JV Casio and Peejay Barua also had good games as La Salle showed what teamwork is all about.
The first quarter was tight as both squads played good offense and defense. But that is as far as it went for the Falcons. In the 2nd quarter, La Salle clamped down on defense and ran their plays well. They took a 13 point lead into the halftime break and never looked back.
Except for a run in the 3rd that cut the La Salle lead to 4, Adamson was just overmatched today. At that point the Archers’ defense took over and raised the lead back to double digits.
Just when they thought they have the answers, Coach Franz Pumaren changes the questions. In a surprise move with about 4 minutes left in the last quarter and the La Salle lead still within reach, Coach Pumaren takes out his centers and has a small unit on the floor.
With Casio, Mangahas, Barua, Villanueva and Malabes on the court, La Salle did not give an inch of the lead. It looked like Coach Leo Austria, who had a bigger and beefier group on the floor, was not ready for the move.
After the game, I asked Coach Franz “why the move?” In classic Pumaren style, he said, “my big men weren’t playing well so I made the adjustment”.
Casio is playing awesome. Maierhofer is as dominant as people expected him to be. Peejay Barua is a dependable offensive weapon. You mix that in with the right kind of players that can play the classic La Salle defense and what you get is a team that is a legitimate contender.
It is worth mentioning that this La Salle team is still starting to gel. They are not in peak form yet. But then again that is a patented Pumaren season. Peak at the right time. Win the games that matter. Learn from your wins but learn more from your losses.
Simon Atkins is showing that he is worthy of taking over from TY Tang. Marko Batricevic is still not 100% but started in today’s game. This guy has a sweet touch once he gets back into shape. Joshua Webb is still feeling his way in his new position. James Mangahas has shown a lot of improvement but can definitely show more.
La Salle can go up to 14 players deep. This year, they have not wilted under pressure especially in the endgame. Last year, this was where their problem was during the double round robin stage. Their foul shooting is the most important area they have to improve on.
La Salle may not have the best individual players but they have the right players for the system and philosophy of Coach Franz Pumaren. In all their games so far, different players have stepped up. The team concept is there and that has always made DLSU a contender.
Tidbits:
In fairness, the officiating today has improved from horrible to bad. There were still a lot of questionable calls. The refs also made less trips to the Commissioner’s table during the course of the game.
The Commissioner was unusually quiet during the DLSU – Adamson game. Maybe he has read or has been told of what the many readers of inboundpass have expressed.
I was told by an NCAA source that by next week, they will be posting their 2008 rules on their Web site. Will the UAAP follow suit? Don’t hold your breath.
Sam Ekwe is not going to be suspended because of the wrong uniform issue. Rumor has been going around different websites saying that he will be. I have confirmed with a reliable NCAA source that this is absolutely false. If he would have been suspended, I would be the first to raise a howl over this.
Ekwe however admitted during the NCAA MANCOM meeting that he did lose his uniform and that he used the uniform of last season. Maybe if the San Beda officials would have informed the NCAA Commissioner about this prior to the game, there would not have been anything to protest about.
What I have heard though is that Ekwe is not 100%. I actually noticed that in the game that San Beda lost to JRU. Ekwe did not have that instant spring to his leaping abilities. He would bend his knees more and was slower than his usual self. I am sure other coaches will watch the San Beda – JRU contest to see how to best contain the Red Lions.
I was talking with other sportswriters at today’s game and it was a consensus that the team the frontrunners should watch out for is National University. They are too good a team to stay winless. I was saying that the Bulldogs are very unpredictable and will definitely score an upset. Being at the bottom of the standings, any victory will be an upset.
Talking about the Bulldogs, Junel Baculi has been tapped to be their new Athletic Director after the school was bought by Mr. Henry Sy. Expect a major thrust in recruitment. It is a known fact that a good showing in the high profile world of the UAAP helps increase enrollment.

To rissa,
I just want to react with your statement which is,
…Excuse me, wag mo ilaLANG yung ADMU kasi mahirap pumasa sa ACET.
Entrance exams are not that reliable when it comes to measuring your capabilities. It is because the format of most exams is in Multiple Choice. One can even get a perfect score if he/she is one lucky bastard when it comes to guessing answers.
Many admit to pass the UPCAT after guessing so many items due to the time pressure and the difficulty of the subject.
I’ll promise to worship you if you manage to get a perfect score, or at least a very high score in UPCAT, ACET, DLSUCET or whatever exams out there with Identification as its format and not Multiple Choice. :)

Why would you wanna join the UAAP kung kelan kayo ang team that overcome Ateneo’s record of 14 NCAA titles in 2003 and pasalamat nga kayo dahil kayo ang number1 kahit hindi number1 ang San Beda sa title race ng NCAA DIBA?!

- Totoo. The Bulldogs are underdogs once again, but they’re always ready to bite any other team’s heels in any given opportunity, at any point in time. They’re really that dangerous (thoughts of last year’s loss to NU lingers on my mind now).
NU’s game vs Ateneo bukas ang pwedeng maging halimbawa. NU’s role players have to step up big though. Hindi kakayanin nina Jonathan Jankhe at Edwin Asoro kung silang dalawa lang. Guard and big men play pa lang ng Ateneo, mahihirapan na sila:
possible defensive scenarios:
on Jankhe - Escueta’s my best bet, but i think Salamat will have his share of minutes on defending Jay. Tiu maybe, but not too much because he has to concentrate on offense. Running through screens on every offensive possession takes so much of one’s energy.
on Asoro - I think Baldos starts at 4, then Nonoy will take over, or it could be the other way around. Jobe I think will be the 3rd guy on Edwin.
If Ateneo concentrates on Jay and Edwin, other NU players would have more opportunities to score. Effective dapat ang ball sharing. I think one strength of NU is their wings, so they have to capitalize on that more: they should swing the ball more to the corners, hit the shots if they’re open or try to penetrate and create situations. Defensively, they have to contribute also such as getting rebounds/boxing out since its difficult to work one’s way on Ateneo’s bigs.
Go Ateneo! One Big FIGHT!

ayun sa world debate website, ang ALL-TIME rank ng de la salle ay 38th in the world, habang ang UP ay 46, saka sa recently held Australs 2008(i was a room manager there!), DLSU team 1 ranked no. 20 while UP Diliman team 1(they fielded only 1 team) ranked 32nd, DLSU team 2 ranked 37th..but according also to the world debating website for the year 2008 world rankings ONLY, UPD ranked no. 41 while DLSU is no.80, hmmmmm..My mistake maybe DLSU Is not better, maybe they are equal now..

great news that junel bauli is the new NU atheletic director. hopefully, NU will get out of the bottom and be UAAP contender and cahampion. thank you mr henry sy for buying NU, you’ll surley rejuvenate the team just like UE was rejuvenated after Lucio TAn acquired UE or SBC after pangilinan got it. i hope yuchengco spends more on sports to make MIT a champion to elevate the team form mere FF contenders.
