Baracael out of danger; probe ongoing

MAC BARACAEL, the FEU mainstay who was shot in the evening of July 24, is out of danger.

The police investigating the crime say that Baracael was shot twice but only one bullet hit him. Baracael was walking back to the FEU campus and was a few steps behind teammates Ron Cabagnot and Robert Kave. He said he felt someone walk up behind him with a gun and before he could react, was shot.

There had been initial reports that a silencer was used but authorities claim that the sole gunman could have taken advantage of the heavy downpour to muffle the sound of the gun. Witnesses say that the man calmly walked away after firing at Baracael. Though many witnessed the shooting, no one could identify the shooter.

Authorities also said that the crime seems to have been well-planned and that the act was not random. The target was Baracael mainly because of the proximity of the suspect from the victim.

Today, Baracel was wide awake and faced the media from his hospital bed. When the press interviewed him and asked who may be responsible for the crime, Baracael said that he had no known enemies. He, however, openly admitted that there was a strong possibility that gambling syndicates could be behind the shooting.

Different law enforcement agencies are said to have joined the investigation and are looking into the shooting.

Anyway, lets continue praying for Mac Baracael and the people behind this incident. May the Lord take care of them.

2 sentenced to prison in NBA betting scandal

    Saturday, July 26, 2008

NEW YORK (AP) - Two former high school classmates of disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy were both sentenced to more than a year in prison Thursday for their roles in a betting scandal that embarrassed the league.

A federal judge in Brooklyn gave James Battista, a professional gambler and admitted drug addict, 15 months in prison for making bets based on inside tips. Thomas Martino, the scheme’s middleman, was sentenced to a year and one day for paying the referee thousands of dollars for the tips.

The men, both 42 and former classmates of Donaghy in Springfield, Pa., apologized before being sentenced.

“I’m not blaming either one of my co-defendants,” Battista said. “I made bad choices.”
