Letran wrestles solo lead from NCAA pack

WHEN push comes to shove, Letran sure knows how to fight back.

Colegio de San Juan de Letran used its experience in crunch time to dodge the upset axe of the Mapua Cardinals to score a 67-60 victory and claim the solo lead in the 84th NCAA seniors basketball tournament last July 23, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.

“The boys really showed character especially when Mapua was rallying in the second half,� said Letran coach Louie Alas. “They held Mapua in critical times, and I’m very happy that we are leading the pack now.�

Dino Daa, one of the league’s most potent frontliners, delivered a team-high 17 points along with 14 rebounds and four assists to preserve Letran’s unblemished record after six games.

“They [Mapua] were very determined to follow JRU’s path, but we did not let them take that road,� said Daa, younger brother of PBA mainstay Dino. “All we need is to keep up the intensity each game.�

After a sluggish first quarter that saw them trail by as high as 10, the Knights were back to their usual deadly form as they executed their trapping defense, hustled and ran the break in the succeeding quarters.

Rey Guevarra had 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals to make up for RJ Jazul’s sub-par 10 point-effort for Letran, who snapped the Cardinals’ four-game winning streak.

Ian Mazo, who led Mapua with 18 points, canned both his free throws with 59.6 ticks left in the game as the Cardinals came within one, 60-61. But the suffocating Knights defense held them scoreless in the game’s final minute to drop the hosts down the team standings at 4-2.

“[Guevarra] also played well, he provided the intangibles,� said Alas. “He is trying to boost the team’s confidence when he’s inside the court.�

The Knights outrebounded the equally fleet-footed Cardinals, 57-41. Second chance points also saved Letran from defeat as they notched 22 as against the measly nine of coach Leo Isaac’s squad.

    The Letarn - San Beda game is eagerly anticipated. The rivalry is heating up. What started out as a contrived marketing rivalry is turning out to be real. It is becoming a rivalry for the present times. The historical rivalry was between San Beda and Ateneo becuase they met so many times in the finals during the heyday of the NCAA.

    Now its SBC vs CSJL. Thrown out the stats, never mind the standings, laban ito ng Muralla vs Mendiola. Matira anf matibay.

    I think the true test for the Knights is the last game of the 1st Round vs. San Beda… A rematch of Last Year NCAA Finals… If Letran Knights deserve an automatic entry to the finals, that’s the time that we can say they beat the odds!

    wala akong maalalang dumaan na sasakyan pare. sadya nyo bang dinadaan sa mapua para masabing may kotse kayo? hahaha. pano nyo naman nakontrol ang intramuros pare? pakilinaw naman, baka kasi ako lang pala di nakakaalam. haha.

    @mapuan salamat bro! hehe. buti walang napipikon. :)

    mula nang pumasok ako sa mapua hanggang ngayong alumni na ko, may isa talagang description para sa cards na di mawala-wala, “papogi” hehe. inuuna kasi pacute e ang gagaling sana ng players. sabagay mukhang effective naman, sikat sa media e. hehehe.

    pero andito pa rin kaming mga estudyante nyo handang sumuporta maski ano mangyari. iwan nyo na lang sa min ang pagpapapogi. B-)

    I dont think the knights will sweep the eliminations but they will have a great elims. and if they do sweep the elims. the knights will not suffer the same fate UE had last year.. because letran is not at its peak.. UE last year won 2 pre season tournaments before the start of UAAP season 70 and after winning 14 straight in the eliminations they had a long lay-off.. I’ve watched the games of letran this season and all of their wins is because of how they put the extra effort in doing the little things.. the intangibles! if the muralla dribblers keep on improving and unpredictable every game.. they will have a chance on winning their 17th NCAA Crown. by the way, an elimination round sweep on the NCAA does not assure a Finals slot. correct me if I’m wrong.

    to my fellow mapuans: sa palagay ko kaya si J.Pascual parin ang strating center ng cards is because of seniority. alam ko mejo mas maganda nilalaro ni sarangay kaysa sa kanya pero talagang ganun. pabayaan na natin ang coaching duties kay coach leo. in the mean time, wag na tau magsisihan at makipagsiraan sa ibang skuls. ayos lang un. may natatalo may nananalo. ang dapat nating gawin eh manood palagi ng games at sumuporta sa team and do the WAVE…. woooohooooo…. saya….

    sa mga iband posters dito, paxenxa na sa mga papansin. wag nyo na lang kasi pinapansin, at lalo lang magpapapansin. ok? ok!!! kitakits bukas…

    please. i though the mapua-letran rivalry is one of the peaceful rivalries in the ncaa? now i’m in doubt if is…
    ..jologs daw tayo ng intramuros! kaya pala pag nag-parade ang letran eh kaya nilang ipasara an mga balwarte plus pati mga guardia ng inramuros eh kasama sa bantay nila…the fact na letran ang pinakalumang eskwelahan sa intramuros makes it much more sweeter. LOL
