Letran wrestles solo lead from NCAA pack

WHEN push comes to shove, Letran sure knows how to fight back.
Colegio de San Juan de Letran used its experience in crunch time to dodge the upset axe of the Mapua Cardinals to score a 67-60 victory and claim the solo lead in the 84th NCAA seniors basketball tournament last July 23, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.
“The boys really showed character especially when Mapua was rallying in the second half,” said Letran coach Louie Alas. “They held Mapua in critical times, and I’m very happy that we are leading the pack now.”
Dino Daa, one of the league’s most potent frontliners, delivered a team-high 17 points along with 14 rebounds and four assists to preserve Letran’s unblemished record after six games.
“They [Mapua] were very determined to follow JRU’s path, but we did not let them take that road,” said Daa, younger brother of PBA mainstay Dino. “All we need is to keep up the intensity each game.”
After a sluggish first quarter that saw them trail by as high as 10, the Knights were back to their usual deadly form as they executed their trapping defense, hustled and ran the break in the succeeding quarters.
Rey Guevarra had 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals to make up for RJ Jazul’s sub-par 10 point-effort for Letran, who snapped the Cardinals’ four-game winning streak.
Ian Mazo, who led Mapua with 18 points, canned both his free throws with 59.6 ticks left in the game as the Cardinals came within one, 60-61. But the suffocating Knights defense held them scoreless in the game’s final minute to drop the hosts down the team standings at 4-2.
“[Guevarra] also played well, he provided the intangibles,” said Alas. “He is trying to boost the team’s confidence when he’s inside the court.”
The Knights outrebounded the equally fleet-footed Cardinals, 57-41. Second chance points also saved Letran from defeat as they notched 22 as against the measly nine of coach Leo Isaac’s squad.

sbc has a shitty and foul smell because of the foul drainage in the area. i was there saturday to see a friend. it rained and the pool of rain or flood water that accumulated in and around the campus had a very foul -imburnal like, parang ebak that stagnated for centuries, masusuka ka talaga. no insult ot pun intended, amoy kubeta talaga. i retched and almost puked my guts out. i don’t know if the school or mayor lom is to blame for this deplorable shitty smell situation. i’ve visited other schools in the university belt area, and the water also accumulates up to ankle high. pero hini mabantot. i’m sure this is also the problem of the surrounding community and schools, siguro ganito din ang bantot sa holy spirit, sa ceu, unless of course they did something about it. if mayor lim is to balme dor this deplotable situation - HOY GISING - LIM, fix this mess.
Some say the stinky mess of medniola can NEVER be fixed as the foul smell comes from all the way from malacanan….baka totoo nga…

i didn’t know your school has janitors. i passed by mendiola and san beda, that school san beda has the shittiest smell and the dirtiest place in that area.
i guess your janitors dont get paid well.
if knights players look like your janitors…at least our school, players and coAching staff play it fair and square unlike your school who resort to imports and breaking ncaa rules..mandaraya kayo..enough said.

Letran pala nangunguna sa ranking dito… wonder how they trained UST sa mga sparring at kung baket nangungulelat sa UAAP… nakakapasok ba keo kahit sa final four ng mga invitations? alam ko kasi red lions lang ang parati pasok pero parati ding iyak sa UE… lang beses na ba?
being honest sa inyo, when it comes to “BASKETBALL” 2nd rate lang ang liga nyo this century… proven yan sa mga stats at mga competitions na merong representative both UAAP and NCAA + mga ballers na napunta sa pro league… wag ng magangaasan ok… tsaka wag nyo ding ankingin na kesyo c ganto beda high baste high o masyadong high… believe me lumipat sila sa schools sa UAAP for their own reasons… at baka masaktan lang keo kung baket… (more fame, prestige, challenge and opportunity na wala sa liga nyo)

sa totoo lang naman.. sa basketball, maybe mas magaling ang letran.. pero interms of academics… id go for mapua. kasi ano ba forte ng letran? hanggang basketball lang… at pati pala ung koche na hindi pa daw bumubusina accdng to @sigang mapuan..hehe. mapua, they are very good sa engineering, ganda ng performance sa boards. nakilala lang letran dahil sa basketball. crap.
