ADAMSON University was thinking upset again, but De La Salle had other ideas.

The Green Archers were consistent on both ends of the floor, and that proved to be the difference-maker as they knocked off the giant-killing Falcons, 76-61, for their fourth straight win in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball competition last July 24, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Guard JV Casio, DLSU’s leading scorer this season, torched the Falcons with three triples and five field goals for 19 points to go along with four rebounds and five assists, while the lanky Rico Maierhofer scattered 13 points and seven boards.

“We did not underestimate Adamson because of what it did to UE,” said Casio, referring to the Falcons’ 66-64 upset of the Red Warriors last Saturday. “Everybody played tough today. It’s good.”

The Green Archers’ only loss thus far was at the hands of the Blue Eagles of Ateneo on opening weekend. Coach Franz Pumaren’s wards also snapped Adamson’s two-game win streak, which dropped the squad to 2-3.

“We are getting into the groove of things. The players are beginning to accept their respective roles. There are no superstars, it’s a team’s collective effort each game,” Pumaren said.

Rookie Maui Villanueva chipped in with a personal-best 12 points and four rebounds, while Peejay Barua and Bader Malabes added 10 apiece.

Staring at a 13-point halftime deficit, 35-22, Adamson unleashed a 13-4 run to move within four, 35-39, after a Marc Agustin basket with 6:07 to go in the third quarter.

But De La Salle answered back with a scorching 13-4 burst of its own, which was capped by a Maierhofer lay-up to give his squad a 52-39 lead with only 13 seconds remaining in the third.

The Green Archers managed to keep their double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Agustin, son of 1992 PBA MVP Ato, and Jan Colina scored 12 points each to lead the Falcons.

La Salle shot a whopping 34-of-66 (51.5%) from the field, while Adamson recorded a 25-of-58 (43.1%) clip. The Green Archers also had six triples compared to the Falcons miserable 1-of-12.

Also, the Green and White put up 19 points on Adamson’s 19 turnovers.

DLSU simply knows how to win games considering they’re not that deep this year however with exellent conditioning, discipline, and good coaching, they are up there as the team to beat. As for the falcons, hang in there guys…consistency is everything be it in offense, defense, or mental toughness. The learning continues on….Go ADU!
