Baracael now in stable condition

FAR EASTERN University forward Mac Baracael, who was gunned down by an unknown assailant at around 8:30 p.m. last July 24, 2008 at the corner of Morayta and R. Papa streets, is now in stable condition.

Tamaraws head coach Glen Capacio told inboundpass.com that Baracael is now in “stable condition, but still under observation.” Television footages showed a conscious and awake Baracael being brought into an ambulance en route to Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City from Mary Chiles Hospital in Sampaloc.
Physicians said that the 6′3″ Baracael will be under observation for the next 24 hours.
Baracael was with teammates Robert Kave and Ron Cabagnot when he was shot at the back by a still unidentified assailant. Two shots were fired, and one of them pierced his lung. He was immediately rushed to Mary Chiles Hospital, where tubes were inserted to suck out blood that had accumulated in his body.
The third-year forward is currently having a splendid season, averaging 10.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in 23 minutes of action for the Tams.
inboundpass.com is one with Baracael’s family, loved ones and the entire FEU and basketball community in condemning this heinous crime, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

speedy recovery to baracael!
But going into the possible motive for this crime, game-fixing is one angle the police should look into.
If i remember right, last uaap season a player from feu was suddenly pulled out (did not allow to play anymore) by feu team mgt/coaching staff. Aside from that player, baracael was allegedly one of the players investigated by feu but no direct evidence against him.

@green_animo, anong pakialam mo kung gusto pagusapan ng iba ang terminologies used in the report? sa thread nga na ito umabot na ang topic sa game-fixing and some even accused (half-jokingly, maybe) rival schools of being behind the incident.
some may want to wish baracael well, some don’t care and just want to put in their 2 cents.
anything goes when you are in a public forum. you should know better.

regarding game fixers, this recent game should be looked into:
In the fourth, the Tamaraws slowly pulled away as Fernandez and Baracael delivered the goodies.
Following a crucial foul of Jervy Cruz causing him to be out of the game with 26 seconds remaining, Baracael made his two charities securing the Tamaraws win, 65-69.
The loss drowned UST further to a 1-3 win-loss card with the UP Fighting Maroons.

whamos,
I didn’t say you were judging Baracael. I just said that if what you heard is not verified then keep it to yourself. Spreading a rumor is not fair to Baracael.

@ Cholo,
I’m not judging Mac, that’s why I said that I hope this is not the reason for him being shot last night.

When we received news of this last night, I was very disturbed. I’ve admired Baracael’s play since he came into the league. After hearing more about it and how it happened, I could not help but think of the different reasons for what appears to have been a “drive-by shooting”. It’s not for us to speculate, but obviously this was not a random act. Unfortunately, there may not be any witnesses to identify the assailants. Whatever led to this, let’s wait and see what the authorities come up with. Anybody who can shed light on this, please come forward and help in the investigation. In the meantime, we wish Mac and his family, and the FEU community, all the best.

Hope this has nothing to do with the suspension of NABRO ref involved in the FEU-DLSU 1st round game. Our prayers for the swift recovery of Mac and that the perpetrators of this dastardly crime be brought to justice.

@Ateneo: Tsong, dahan-dahan ka lang sa mga sinasabi mo. Hindi magandang biro yan.
@whamos: Mahirap namang manghusga agad. Nalagay na nga sa peligro yung buhay ng tao tapos “ibabaon” pa natin?
Buti naman at medyo maayos na si Mac ngayon. Thanks sir Chris for the update.

Sorry for being the devil’s advocate here, but I heard from some grapevine that Baracael ‘did not cooperate’ or breached some agreement with a gang of game fixers, and that was the price of his non-cooperation.
I know that game-fixing issues always linger in the league (like the incompetent referees) but I hope this is not the reason behind this incident.

okay lang yung “gunned down” which indicates he was shot using a gun, as oppose to say being shot with an arrow??! (arrowed down, i suppose?)
when you use “gunned down” in a sentence, it doesn’t necessarily mean the person died. besides the sentence also explained that baracael is now in stable condition. the author used “gunned down” to imply the victim was not able to fight back or defend himself after the attack. he was already down and remained that way right after.
“was shot” doesn’t also mean the victim survived. ex. “Mark Chapman shot John Lennon…” and we all know john lennon died.
FYI.

now that Mac is in stable condition, the authorities should look at every angle what may have cause this violent action, gambling, syndicate, personal grudge, anything, anything that could get some clues.
sana may konsensya yun bumaril at yun mga kasabwat niya, in my opinion, this was planned, imagine getting away without any significant witnesses, a gun with a silencer, and has a knowledge on the time of FEU practices, and Mac’s possible route/routine after the practice, and know how to plan an exit point.
dagdagan and police visibility sa Ubelt.

“was shot” and not “gunned down” and dapat ginamit. gunned down kasi parang napatay na ang biktima. police jargons lang po. thanks.
