JRU explodes from three-point range to upset San Beda

COACH Ariel Vanguardia has steered Jose Rizal University to something it hasn’t done in four years – defeat San Beda College.

Living up to their monicker, the Heavy Bombers bombarded the Red Lions with a barrage of triples to post a stunning 79-74 upset win in the 84th NCAA men’s basketball competition last July 23, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.

John Wilson, playmaker Marc Cagoco and Jay-R Bulangis stepped up from beyond the arc as the Heavy bombers hit a season-high 13 triples to deal the reigning back-to-back champions their first loss in six outings.

“It feels great to beat the defending champions. I was 0-4 against San Beda since I took over in 2006, and at least I finally won one, said Vanguardia, who replaced coach Cris Calilan in 2006.

Slotman JR Sena, who led JRU with 18 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the field to go along with 13 rebounds, took care of business in the opening quarter after firing three baskets to give his squad a one-point edge, 15-14.

“We just worked hard and we did not notice that the game was close, said Sena. “We just saw it during the final minute but everybody stayed together and worked until we got the win.

Cagoco, who also had 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting from three-point land, waxed hot towards the end of the second quarter when he converted two straight triples that helped JRU bridge the gap to two at the end of the first half.

The third year playmaker from Davao, however, kept on firing away from rainbow country in the third period, including a crucial trey that handed the Bombers the lead at 54-52 after trailing by as much as eight points.

The 5-foot-8 PBL veteran buried yet another shot from beyond the arc, sparking a 7-2 run to put the Mandaluyong outfit in front, 61-54, with 6:51 left in the game.

Swingman Ogie Menor, who poured in 16 points, forced a three-point play with 2:10 left that knotted the count at 69, capping off a 7-0 Red Lion run. But Sena scored on an undergoal stab before Wilson nailed a crucial triple to give JRU a 74-69 lead with 1:26 to go.

Borgie Hermida kept the game close by making two free throws, 74-71, with 36 ticks left. But Wilson silenced the San Beda faithful after firing another triple with 14 seconds left to extend his team’s cushion to 77-71.

JRU went into a frenzy after clinching its third straight win after losing its first two. The victory over San Beda was the Bombers’ first since a 74-71 triumph on August 16, 2004, at the Makati Coliseum. No single current Heavy Bomber or Red Lion participated in that game.

Menor and Pong Escobal topscored for the Red Lions with 16 points each while Hermida added 10. Center Sam Ekwe added eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Heavy Bombers surprisingly collared more rebounds than the tall Red Lions, 52-43. They had 26 offensive boards as against the champions’ eight, which resulted to more second chance points (20-8).

JRU also had more assists than San Beda, 24-16.

Individual Scores:

JRU 79 – Cagoco 18, Sena 18, Wilson 9, Bulangis 9, Nocom 8, Kabigting 7, Hayes 6, Njei 4, Almario 0, Agas 0, Pradas 0.

San Beda 74 – Menor 16, Escobal 16, Hermida 10, Ekwe 8, Lanete 8, Gamalinda 6, Taupa 4, Taganas 3, Pascual 3, Tirona 0, Marcelo 0.

Quarter scores: 15-14; 35-37; 54-52; 79-74

what a win for the bombers. they earned this win and they deserve it. for the red Lions, this is a wake up call. they have to get back in shape and show their championship attitude against letran on wednesday. para naman sa JRU, you should only utter the word “ANIMO” if you know the real meaning of it. alam nio ba? and for your information, Animo was first used by San Beda when the NCAA was founded. it was only often used by DLSU that’s why mas kilala sila sa Animo cheer. again, goodluck to the knights and red lions sa wednesday.

he can take the ball strong to the paint and make the extra pass. he did it twice this afternoon. impressive.

It was my first time to watch an NCAA game earlier since my dad forced me to come with him. And good god those two games were awesome. The problem with the NCAA now is exposure compared to the UAAP. The league lacks sponsors damnit.
What I am bringing up here is that the BAP should create a unified league to create exposure to the Jazuls, the Ekwes, the Dela Penas and the other great players of the league.
What if this league I’m trying to propose would be in two divisions (UAAP and NCAA) with UAAP (Thursdays and Saturdays)and NCAA (Wednesdays and Fridays) meeting twice in a season while interleague would be a one time meeting (Sundays). Playoff formats would be this way: top 4 teams of each league advance, twice to beat for the top 2 teams of each league (for example: as of now, Ateneo vs. JRU, Letran vs. UE, DLSU vs. MIT and SBC vs. FEU). Semifinals are best of 3 while the Finals is best of 5. This way, all schools are given equal exposure and the players could showcase their talents at a bigger stage.

Nchotu John Njei is from Cameroon.

Ariel Vanguardia approached the SBC bench after the game but no one was there to shake hands with him. After about two seconds, as he walked away, Mike Advani came to shake his hand.

In the Filoil/Flying V tourney, Bedans were complaining about Vanguardia’s lack of sportsmanship. I hope they’ll all be enlightened this time around, as the whole country saw this one live.

And yes, I am in a position to talk about this since I was the one who restrained Vanguardia from Lim along the corridors of the Arena in San Juan. I have a written incident report that’s hopefully still with the NCAA ManCom.

    Peace out.

well congrats to the Bombers, it was a good game to watch, and a lesson learned for the Red Lions, well back to the drawing board…

Lim & Vanguardia, No Love Lost to them, but i guess the players for both squads has already leave it behind.

    Animo San Beda!!!

PS: si RED_NO_MORE naghahanap lang yan ng pipikunin. wag niyo na pansinin.

    @wounded bloodyred

the Awoo taunt has been used before be the Red Army, by the time it was popularize by the 300 movie, but it was not that significant at first, but i guess everyone is enjoying doing that, and BTW bro, San Beda Pls not Beda only.ok

i still do wonder the defensive schemes (or should i say Scheme)of Frankie Lim, 2-3 zone is most effective when combined with other types of defense so that other coaches will be off-guard, but he still stick to that 2-3 zone.

    Animo San Beda

    peace.

It goes to show na Coach Frankie Lim is no sportsman after all. Wala man lang balls to confront Vanguardia and shake the winning coach hand. Yan ba ang may pinag-aralan? Yan ba ang gusto niyang ipakitang halimbawa sa mga players? He should bury his hatchet with Vanguardia kasi last year pa nangyari iyung altercation nila. He should grow up as a person.

Anyway, congrats sa JRU fans and supporters. Madaming nagsasabi na tsamba lang panalo ng team ninyo. But who cares, you beat the defending champs and that is all that matters. Nakasulat na yung malaking W sa record books.

There was nothing wrong with employing the zone. But Lim should have noticed how far his wards were from the JRU shooters. The Heavy Bombers hoisted 41 treys, 13 of which hit the mark. Around 30/41 were good attempts since it seemed like the Lions did not want to play good defense.

And to some sour-graping readers here, refrain from comments like, “walang pinag-aralan” or “university pero walang kilala.” This site has no space for BS like that.

    Thanks.

well if you come to think of it, Animo Rizal isn’t Familiar to me at all, I thought it was MABUHAY RIZAL (Sound Better and patriotic).

in the Old Game ka na ba?(channel 2) game show hosted by Kris, there is a category there that the player should give the name of the schools who uses the word Animo in their cheer, and my personal answer doesn’t include JRU, i can’t remember if it was part of the right answer.

as you insist the use of Animo, well no problem with that, every one is entitled to use it (in a good manner), but for me MABUHAY RIZAL Suites better.

    Animo San Beda.

Animo Rizal? Hahahaha! Wala naman sigurong copyright sa salitang “Animo” ang LaSalle at San Beda? Hayaan na natin ang ating mga JRU friends! Katunog naman nya ang “Animo LaSalle!” Gayunpaman, nakakatawa pa rin. Hahahahaha! Pwede rin “GO JOSE!” ala “GO USTE!” ng UST. HAhahaha. Sana lang may originality ang mga tao. Anyways, congrats JRU! Sana laging may upset! Mas masaya!

Congrats! great game from you guys. THIS IS THE WAY TO WIN A GAME AGAINST THE DEFENDING BACK TO BACK CHAMPION.Can’t wait to watch live our next game, for sure our Red Lion team will try to equalize everything. This is a testament to improving basketball skills of some NCAA teams. Another team notch their game up to another level. Now we have two competition, excitement is back in our den…. This is good for NCAA!

CSB is below the class JRU! shame to them for having an illegitimate win against the Back to Back Champion.

    ralph,

You said “..CSB is below the class JRU! shame to them for having an illegitimate win against the Back to Back Champion.
Animo San Beda! Shame on you CSB…”

    Well, read this:

“During the 2 hr meeting [NCAA Mancom meeting deciding the protest] held last night… Mr. Sam Ekwe had no choice but to admit that before going to the game, he realized that his uniform was “stolen”. He immediately informed the Coaching Staff. Instead of bringing up the matter to the their Mancom Representative, the Coaching Staff took it upon themselves to instruct him to use the old uniform and that they would take care of “the problem”. Therefore, they obviously knew that what they where doing was against the Rules.”

So, who now has the illegitimate win? Who now should be ashamed?

    ‘nuf said.
