Idiocy 101: Enrollment now ongoing

IDIOCY 101 is the newest collegiate basketball crash course. Its aims are simple: To disrupt the beautiful game of hoops and deviate attention from on-court action to meddling by referees, league officials and any other person not donning a jersey.

Enrollment is ongoing. Interested applicants can know more about the course with the help of this syllabus.

Course description

Idiocy 101 is a well-designed, off-classroom subject that deals with causing controversy in both the UAAP and NCAA. The course is structured to anger and enrage passionate fans of the sixteen schools that comprise both aforementioned leagues through horrible officiating and questionable leadership and decision-making skills of UAAP and NCAA officials.

Course outline

The course begins with historical precedents. The NCAA got the ball rolling over the summer through its lack of decisiveness on the Philippine Christian University issue. It flip-flopped over whether or not the Dolphins should participate in Season 84. After at least two postponements, the league’s top honchos finally decided to let the Taft outfit play – a late move that didn’t really give PCU the chance to recruit vigorously and prepare for the battle ahead.

After examining past events, Idiocy 101 moves into the early-season blunders that have beset both leagues. On opening weekend of the UAAP, students of rival schools Ateneo and De La Salle were left clueless over two technical fouls issued on their respective coaches. Green Archers mentor Franz Pumaren was slapped a technical for not wearing his official ID – a move that was valid if only some semblance of consistency was maintained. Just a day before, UST tactician Pido Jarencio managed to coach one whole game against UE sans wearing his own ID and the technical foul.

Ateneo coach Norman Black, meanwhile, was issued his own technical in the DLSU game for “disobeying the commissioner’s orders before the start of the fourth quarter. Commissioner Almighty, as one of my colleagues often says, was seen arguing with Black and seething with anger across the playing court as if a drunk man was being confronted by an equally wasted individual for messing up “My Way at a local videoke.

The course introduces even the most avid of basketball fans to the art of despicable officiating. Technical fouls ranging from “improper bench decorum, like the one given to Ateneo against UP apparently because two team officials were seated on the floor beside the bench – a reality given the fact that there are 11 players on the bench at any given time and a common practice in itself – to a million warnings and Ts for “taunting despite the fact that players naturally can get carried away and psy-war each other are now a constant in college hoops.

At this point in the season, it is clear that the NABRO refs in charge of the UAAP have become the most competent lecturers and practitioners in the field of Idiocy. One of them has already been suspended for the year for “affecting the outcome of the game through the issuance of two technicals on FEU at a crucial point in its game against La Salle. These issues have to be mastered in order to obtain a satisfactory mark in Idiocy 101.

The course then moves to the NCAA, whose games are hosted by the empty Pasay Astrodome. Idiocy 101 will also equip the student with tools on lackluster marketing, with the NCAA being the test case. Despite good officiating by PBL referees and exciting matchups, no one seems to care about the country’s oldest collegiate league. The league’s backers seem to be putting all their efforts on the UAAP, so much so that one playdate every week is not televised, not even on a delayed basis. If the JRU-San Beda and Letran-Mapua games were not moved from a non-televised Monday [July 21] to July 23, the art of efficient marketing would have already been perfected.

Course requirements

Students must manifest the anger and frustration that results from either the humiliating officiating and decision-making in the UAAP, or the apathy and terrible promotion of the NCAA games. Students are advised to boo during games, comment on Web sites like inboundpass.com and actively discuss subject matter among each other.

Consultation hours

Students may contact Commissioner Almighty, NABRO, and other concerned offices, policy boards and committees.

Should the course be a success, and both professors and students perform their tasks, a masteral level course will be offered.

@Green Karma: Easy on the accusations, it was an honest mistake on our end. The program adjusts itself based on the number of wins.

Easy before you find yourself kicked out of this site for shooting your mouth that way.

Mr. Soler, kindly call the attention of your site administrator regarding the UAAP rankings posted as of tonight. Since when did a 5-1 record (83.3%) become superior to 4-0 (100.0%)?

@mapuan: Yes, you’re a few blocks away from Letran. Unfortunately I haven’t come face-to-face with Mapuans, especially in games, so I can’t tell.

If you could help out and encourage your friends to watch the games, it would be highly appreciated. Mapua is still arguably the most dangerous offensive team in the NCAA, so that should be a come-on.

@proud to be a knight: Thanks a lot. I hope all of you can help out and encourage your friends to watch the games. This season is proving to be very exciting, with JRU and even SSC-R now waxing hot and chasing down the frontrunners.

And yes, I am not from Letran but I enjoy seeing the crowd from Muralla. You guys have a swagger that’s not arrogant, but confident. I enjoy it a lot even if I am from a UAAP school.

Sir Christian nice article! the problem of letran is its population. the new management of CSJL reduced the number of required class (P.E class) to watch the games, but i dont have any problem with that because its a conflict on what to prioritize, academics or sports? On the current season of NCAA.. a great 2nd round, final 4 and finals is ahead of us.. letran - san beda round 1 on July 30!

More power to you sir christian!

    Go Fight Letran! Arriba!

if i may say my two cents worth comments on the lack of attendance in ncaa games. I guess its the proximity of the venue from the member schools. Economics also has to do with it. the unabated and spiralling cost of fuel has created a domino effect that watching a live game has become prohibitive.to be sure, putting food on the table would top the list for majority of filipino families. having said that, others may counter that the uaap is packing them in, except for ust which is in manila, the venue of the uaap which is ultra is within striking distance of uaap member schools. moreover, the uaap games are played during weekends unlike the ncaa. lastly, i hate to admit this, but the exodus of admu and dlsu has depleted the ncaa of its glamour and popularity that attendance plummeted.

@pogi: If you thought today’s crowd was a handful, then the previous playing dates would seem like a chapel in Europe to you - no people, all silence.

    It’s gotten that bad.

I think it is true that this NASBRO group should get some polishing up. Just this Sunday, we were able to witness another “great job” by the group. And get this, even in the younger level. They get thier way because they are the officials? Who will get in thier way? This has been going on for sometime especially with this group. I think they must be investigated.

@Grrr!: Perhaps, and hopefully. Friday’s game against JRU won’t be an acid test for the Mapuans, cause it’s a given that they’ll watch.

I really wanna see Mapuans and even students from San Sebastian watch the games. They’ve got top-caliber teams. I have a good feeling that the Stags will rally in the second round, so their school has a lot to watch out for.

@Grrr: You’re spot on. Only Bedans and students from JRU and Perpetual Help pack the arenas. Letran fans are there as well, but not consistently.

What bothers me more is that Mapua, this year’s hosts, isn’t really doing much to strengthen the league’s fanbase. In the first place, it can’t even get its own students to watch.

The league’s backers can’t just roll over and die and say the UAAP will always be superior to them, as far as audience reach goes. Come on, a lot of the NCAA schools have an even richer basketball history than their UAAP counterparts.

“…lackluster marketing, with the NCAA being the test case. Despite good officiating by PBL referees and exciting matchups, no one seems to care about the country’s oldest collegiate league.”

How true! Bring back DLSU and ADMU to the NCAA to revive the league. The UAAP was in on the verge of gasping its last breath until the two teams rejuvenated the league.

No amount of marketing savvy can arouse the interest of the basketball public in a league where even their fans don’t give a damn about the games. Except for the bedans, the students of jru, the elementary kids from csjl, and a few dolphins fanatics, walang nanonood. Even the studentry from host Mapua are nowhere to be seen.

    Kawawang league.

@mapuan: Jake Pascual is the San Beda rookie from PCU high. Mapua’s other Pascual is Jason (#5). Of course, KDP is one of the best all-around players in the country. He’ll be an excellent point guard in the pros.

@archerincali818/pinggoy18: Thanks. A lot of off-court personalities are really getting into my nerves and it’s really time to shut up and play ball.

@h0pe, honestly, UAAP should take out the requirement for a school to be a universtity in order to join the league. It’s all about sports. The UAAP is not an academic exercise. Besides when we talk about seniors basketball, that implies collegiate basketball, that is, games that are played by students who are not in their high school years anymore.

A bachelors degree from SBC has the same weight to those from UP, DLSU, Ateneo, UST, FEU, etc. So what’s the diff?

If the UAAP removes this requirement, and schools have the freedom to transfer leagues, this will result to something similar to a merger. The remaining league will die a natural death. Whether that’s gonna be the NCAA or UAAP.
