Sam Ekwe’s Bantay Bata Jersey

It was clearly a won game. The San Beda Red Lions completely walked over the heads of the College of St. Benilde Blazers last July 18, 2008. Until the infraction report came, wherein Sam Ekwe wore the wrong jersey. I didn’t notice the difference, not even current league commissioner Joe Lipa AND would you believe, Henry Atayde of CSB didn’t notice the deviation.
Uniform issues are nothing new in this league nor the other (UAAP). Other NCAA sporting events are no exception to this anomaly, uniform issues are in abundance. Since basketball is the most popular sport in the land, too bad that it had to be a very big deal.
The NCAA Mancom has set guidelines, like the limit in sponsorship placements, and color (because San Sebastian and Mapua apparently have almost the same color scheme) in each team uniform including the design edition for the season. The above photos will tell the similarity between what Sam Ekwe wore in Season 83 (in Red/dark jersey above) and the jersey he used in the game against the Blazers.
The official San Beda Red Lions jersey design for Season 84 is shown below with Pong Escobal as the example.  I believe one of the issues lie in the Talk and Text logo placement. They suspected and then verified that Sam Ekwe used his Season 83 Bantay Bata uniform.
24 hours from now, College of St. Benilde will make a decision on whether to continue the protest or not.   Take note that I mentioned “will make a decision?, because firstly, it wasn’t CSB that insisted to file the infraction, it was the NCAA Mancom Chairman that did the paper work. If you are worried about the timing, the violation was filed after the score sheets were verified and signed by both teams.
Here are excepts from the FIBA Basketball rule book to help you appreciate and make your own judgment on the infraction:.
June 2006 Page 14 of 83 OFFICIAL BASKETBALL RULES 2006 Rule Three – Teams
4.3 Uniforms
4.3.1 The uniform of the team members shall consist of:
• Shirts of the same dominant colour front and back. All players must tuck their shirts into their playing shorts. ‘All-in-ones’ are permitted.
• T-shirts, regardless of style, may not be worn under shirts unless the player has written medical permission. If such permission has been granted, the T-shirt must be of the same dominant colour as the shirt.
• Shorts of the same dominant colour front and back, but not necessarily of the same colour as the shirts.
• Undergarments that extend below the shorts may be worn provided they are of the same dominant colour as the shorts.
4.3.2 Each team member shall wear a shirt numbered on the front and back with plain numbers, of a solid colour contrasting with the colour of the shirt.
The numbers shall be clearly visible and:
• Those on the back shall be at least twenty (20) cm high.
• Those on the front shall be at least ten (10) cm high.
• The numbers shall be at least two (2) cm wide.
• Teams shall use numbers from four (4) to fifteen (15). National federations have the authority to approve, for their competitions, any other numbers with a maximum of two (2) digits.
• Players on the same team shall not wear the same number.
• Any advertising or logo shall be at least five (5) cm away from the numbers.
4.3.3 Teams must have a minimum of two sets of shirts and:
• The first team named in the programme (home team) shall wear light-coloured shirts (preferably white).
• The second team named in the programme (visiting team) shall wear dark-coloured shirts.
• However, if the two teams involved agree, they may interchange the colours of the shirts.
In a phone conversation with Mr. Atayde, I even told him that this issue will definitely put him on the Bedans most wanted list of people to hate and ridicule during games. But he assured me that he had always wanted to follow the old saying in all of sports – let us win games on the court or on the field, not inside the board room.
Mr. Atayde even told me that even the NCAA Policy Board would rule in favor of San Beda, he would not bother question nor appeal to the NCAA policy board to reverse the issue.
The most noticeable statement during our conversation was that Mr. Atayde even reiterated that he has placed the fate on the infraction issue on the table for the CSB Basketball Team to decide.
Sam Ekwe played with the Same number, name and color in the game. 24 hours and counting.

wag na patulan yung ganyan.
kung may import cla hyaan muna alam nmn ng nkararami kaya lang nakabalik ang san beda is bec of ekwe eh
but if ekwe is not there nung 28 @ 82 ng beda malamang iyak kayong lahat bwenas lng kayo.
at hnding hndi ko mkakalimutan ang championship game na un. which is come from behind leading by 20 points ang beda nun pero humabol until the last minute tlgng bwenas lng kayo
kung wala c ekwe wala kayo!! ang aangas nyo asa nmn kayo phew… mapapatunayan lng yan kung mwawala c ekwe makabalik kayo sa top presence lng nmn nung import nyo ngdadala ng impact eh.
pcu can provide an import pero sabi sa atheletics hnggat maari ayaw nla kumuha sa states kayang kaya kmuha thru by request sa association ng protestant/christan/methodist union dun.
KASI D kami ASANG TULAD NYO!
hahaha
c siruma import ba un c mccoy c allen mga phil-am ung mga un
ang galing kasi mgsalita wala namang alam
i dont give a damn sa mga cnsb nyo sa pcu na mdumi kami
kaya pla delayed ng cnb ng mancom na mglalaro kami which is dapat mglalaro nmn talaga pcu this season.
like nung sa case sa lasal pero wala eh tnatratado kami.
at eto pa pnag babawalan mglaro c castro at belga why?
kasi natatakot cla sa tandem
castro 3 time mvp sa pbl
and belga now in his final appearance sa ncaa
takot lng tlaga cla maagaw ang crown. kaya delayed cnb then lumabas na ung balita na castro will not play anymore kasi maglalaro sya sa singapore team.
too late ng malamang kaya aun tuwang tuwa ang lahat
i am very dissapointed sa part nto.
pcu is a contender this year pero nging malaking kwalan c castro which is a clutch performer, i am a good friend of jason gs2 nya pa tlga mglaro pero dhl sa mga issue na yan hnd na natuloy balak nya ibalik ang crown.
PCU is a underdog team nwalan lng kami ng pnka kylangang player like jason na kayang tumira sa last minute which is na yan ang tumatalo samin ngaun last minute wala cla mapasahan and that’s the fact.
wala akong intensyon may makaaway sa forum nto
lht tyo pde mgsalita pwede mg predict.
that’s all

to all bedista un lng msasabi ko wag dn kayo mag angas kasi may reason dn nmn behind all the facts na ekwe is one the reason kung anu man posisyon ng skul nyo ngaun.. kaya nga may theory na what if* sa philosophy db
knulang lng tlga sa time ang dolphins in that championship game laking upset sana nun weeee..
sa nakikita ko ngaun Mancom ang dapat cchin sa lahat ng problema in the collegiate basketball.
sa case ng pcu this year
sa case nung uniform policy k ekwe
i.d policy or whatever reason is that…

Tss.

red_cub,
You said: “…I think CSB has been waiting to tell the refs because they’ve stopped reading their playbooks and started reading the NCAA law book… nalaman nila kung kailan dapat sila umangal para mapanalo nila ang game.
Reports say that it was not CSB that insisted to file the infraction which was verified only AFTER the game. So you thought wrong. Now, if you are a real Bedan as I know a Bedan to be, you will admit your mistake and apologize.
PS: it’s called the NCAA RULE book.

Mr. Henson is barking up the wrong tree.
CSB’s duty is to file a protest for an infraction they feel was unfairly committed against them – nothing more.
It is not CSB’s duty to decide if it was Ekwe’s fault or if it affected the outcome of the game, and the other points he raised in his article. That is the responsibility of the committee deciding the protest.

just like any citizen, it is one’s duty to report if a crime has been or is being committed. but this doesn’t normally happen in real life and that’s why we are so messed up. culprits always are not answerable anymore to any wrongdoing and so they tend to repeat it.
in this case, a rule was violated. someone has to report and protest the violation and in the case of the ncaa, there may be a tendency for the board to let this one pass if there isn’t any protest submitted to them. therefore, it is csb’s duty if they want to do the right thing. it is not just an option.
you should explain als why you think it is an unfair protest. the violation is being protested not the outcome of the game. the penalty may be unjust which is forfeiture but the protest is proper. you should protest the rules/penalties setup by the league. but until those rules are changed, we have to live with the existing ones.

I was surprised to read Mr. Joaquin Henson’s column “Sporting Chance” of the Philippine Star where he branded St. Benilde’s protest against the Red Lions as “Protest in Poor Taste”, and calling the Filipino people still inflicted with “Crab Mentality” problems. Hello Mr. Henson!! You have been with the so-called sports world throughout your entire life and you know that in every game or tournament, “rules are set” and these sets of rules are not made for “people’s eyes to see only”, but these are sets of rules that have to followed no matter what. IT’S SO UNFORTUNATE THAT SUCH A TALENTED SPORTSCASTER / ANALYST that I admire most COULD EASILY FORGET that even when you face the camera, you are governed by rules to follow – Now who has the Crab Mentality? He who follows the rules or he who presumes that rules can just be taken for granted because one team is more popular than the other? Do you actually think Ekwe can play with SanBeda as a Varsity Player if he did not follow certain rules required by San Beda and NCAA? Think about these with closed eyes!

@genio, the patch is actually a small issue. it’s a matter of how the board will decide on what constitutes an official uniform.
para sa akin, pag kulang o iba ang patch, iba na rin. but i am basing my judgment on the manner ncaa mancomm has decided on the ekwe issue. so i am just assuming this is the way uaap will also decide on ateneo’s case.
on the other hand, if the uniform worn by a player does not really alter the “perception” of everybody that it is really different from his teammates, i think puwede na palagpasin ito. as a general rule, one team should wear the lighter uniforms and the other the darker ones.
wala kasi sa rule book that defines what an official uniform is for a particular game. malamang hindi nakasaad kung ang mga patches included sa definition o hindi.
uaap may rule on this differently from the way ncaa did. kaya lang hindi makatakas ang san beda sa issue kasi may mga precedents na doon sa ncaa na similar cases. ewan ko lang kung meron na sa uaap na ganitong case noon. kung meron, dapat may consistency in applying the rules. otherwise it will be unfair to those who fell victims to this rule before.

oo mahirap talaga pag ang sport eh pinapasukan na ng mga miron. dadaanin nalang sa technicalities. hahanapan na ng butas lahat ng bagay. pero sa nba ewan kung ganito na rin. i remember when i was younger napanood ko ang la lakers naglaro sa nevada, si kareem abdul-jabbar naglaro ibang-iba ang uniform sa mga teammate dahil yun ang nadala. wala naman naging issue, naging memorable pa nga yung laro dahil dun. sana let’s just make things simple and just let common sense rule over us

benilde fought for what’s just. no matter where you bring this issue (and no matter how you flip the coin), this whole controversy on the jersey is and will always be in favor of benilde’s.
..and no matter to which teams this could’ve happened, wearing the wrong jersey is A VIOLATION.
hands down to CSB’s victory! :)

ok grab88, rules are rules, but what you guys are doing is not doing any good to the game. the really bad teams like your csb will continue to be complacent with their (un)achievement because they’ll now look at easier ways of winning games. e.g., outside the playing courts through senseless protests. eh malagyan lang yata ng konting mantsa ang uniform ng player iproprotesta nyo na! eto pa isa pwede nyo gamitin pangprotest next season ha, dapat nakatuck ang jersey ng player, pero near the endgame pag may naka-untuck na kalaban iprotest nyo, baka manalo kayo sa protests nyo and who knows, you may even win the title without winning a single game.
