Sam Ekwe’s Bantay Bata Jersey

It was clearly a won game.  The San Beda Red Lions completely walked over the heads of the College of St. Benilde Blazers last July 18, 2008.  Until the infraction report came, wherein Sam Ekwe wore the wrong jersey.  I didn’t notice the difference, not even current league commissioner Joe Lipa  AND would you believe, Henry Atayde of CSB didn’t notice the deviation.

Uniform issues are nothing new in this league nor the other (UAAP).  Other NCAA sporting events are no exception to  this anomaly, uniform issues are in abundance.  Since basketball is the most popular sport in the land, too bad that it had to be a very big deal.

The NCAA Mancom has set guidelines, like the limit in sponsorship placements, and color (because San Sebastian and Mapua apparently have almost the same color scheme) in each team uniform including the design edition for the season.  The above photos will tell the similarity between what Sam Ekwe wore in Season 83 (in  Red/dark jersey above) and the jersey he used in the game against the Blazers.

The official San Beda Red Lions jersey design for Season 84 is shown below with Pong Escobal as the example.   I believe one of the issues lie in the Talk and Text logo placement.  They suspected and then verified that Sam Ekwe used his Season 83 Bantay Bata uniform.

24 hours from now, College of St. Benilde will make a decision on whether to  continue the protest or not.    Take note that I mentioned “will make a decision?, because firstly, it wasn’t CSB that insisted to file the infraction, it was the NCAA Mancom Chairman that did the paper work.  If you are worried about the timing,  the violation was filed after the score sheets were verified and signed by both teams.

Here are excepts from the FIBA Basketball rule book to help you appreciate and make your own judgment on the infraction:.

June 2006 Page 14 of 83 OFFICIAL BASKETBALL RULES 2006 Rule Three – Teams

4.3 Uniforms

4.3.1 The uniform of the team members shall consist of:

• Shirts of the same dominant colour front and back. All players must tuck their shirts into their playing shorts. ‘All-in-ones’ are permitted.
• T-shirts, regardless of style, may not be worn under shirts unless the player has written medical permission. If such permission has been granted, the T-shirt must be of the same dominant colour as the shirt.

• Shorts of the same dominant colour front and back, but not necessarily of the same colour as the shirts.
• Undergarments that extend below the shorts may be worn provided they are of the same dominant colour as the shorts.

4.3.2 Each team member shall wear a shirt numbered on the front and back with plain numbers, of a solid colour contrasting with the colour of the shirt.

The numbers shall be clearly visible and:

• Those on the back shall be at least twenty (20) cm high.
• Those on the front shall be at least ten (10) cm high.
• The numbers shall be at least two (2) cm wide.
• Teams shall use numbers from four (4) to fifteen (15). National federations have the authority to approve, for their competitions, any other numbers with a maximum of two (2) digits.
• Players on the same team shall not wear the same number.

• Any advertising or logo shall be at least five (5) cm away from the numbers.

4.3.3 Teams must have a minimum of two sets of shirts and:

• The first team named in the programme (home team) shall wear light-coloured shirts (preferably white).
• The second team named in the programme (visiting team) shall wear dark-coloured shirts.
• However, if the two teams involved agree, they may interchange the colours of the shirts.

In a phone conversation with Mr. Atayde, I even told him that this issue will definitely put him on the Bedans most wanted list of people to hate and ridicule during games.  But he assured me that he had always wanted to follow the old saying in all of sports – let us win games on the court or on the field, not inside the board room.

Mr. Atayde even told me that even the NCAA Policy Board would rule in favor of San Beda, he would not bother question nor appeal to the NCAA policy board to reverse the issue.

The most noticeable statement during our conversation was that Mr. Atayde even reiterated that he has placed the fate on the infraction issue on the table for the CSB Basketball Team to decide.

Sam Ekwe played with the Same number, name and color in the game. 24 hours and counting.

    exciting ito. parang 24.

  • MonL says:

Why didn’t the CSB team insist in protesting? Because they knew that the better team won, in a manner they could accept. No win by forfeiture arising from technicality is ever acceptable, not after a game was decided fair and square where it matters: on court. Will the CSB team accept one such win now? Does Mr. Atayde read them correctly?

  • internal says:

    MonL,
sinong atayde? yung atay sa mancom or yung atayde ng inboundpass?

For curiousity sake, are they related?

  • nicksy says:

    @internal

from what i read, they are cousins.

  • MonL says:

    internal,

I was referring to the Mancom rep, Henry.

  • lol says:

    chief waka-waka:

  • MonL says:

A friend of mine in another forum calls this Mancom stunt of passing on to the gallant CSB players the burden of pursuing their protest as a “Pontius Pilate” move. They did the paperwork and now the CSB players are being called to be hatchetmen.

    Crystal.

  • pakito says:

    opinion lang,
hindi na siguro dapat hintayin mag protest ang CSB para hindi nalang magka conflict ang both parties. yung comish nalang mag decide or kahit sino na in charge dyan (na may balls) para matapos na. simple lang naman ang pag usapan eh. may isang naglaro ng iba ang uniform. kung pwede yun panalo ang beda. kung hinde forfeit ang laro in favor of CSB.

  • christian says:

    I-forfeit na para tapos na.

  • chefken says:

^oo nga..sa i-forfeit nyo na….balik-balik lng nman yan eh!goodluck to all of you..in the end,you will all see who is laughing and carrying the championship trophy!

    Animo San Beda!

    umpa..umpa..umpa..

  • LDC says:

MonL said: “…No win by forfeiture arising from technicality is ever acceptable, not after a game was decided fair and square…

Actually, the Rule 6.5 of the UAAP rulebook (as “The Green Mind had quoted in one of his comments in the article “La Salle Wins Again! Ekwe May Lose!) states:

“Any athlete whose playing uniform does not conform to the preceding rules shall be INELIGIBLE to participate in a given game/match.

Given the rule, therefore, Sam Ekwe shouldn’t have played. But he did (20 rebounds, 12 points, 3 steals, and 3 blocks, in fact) so it is inaccurate to say that San Beda won fair and square.

  • boy_siga says:

why not just submit ekwe to a one-game suspension, at least just to save the integrity of the rules of the league..

  • greenlion says:

call it arrogance, but hey, bring it on!!!who cares if this would end up as a losing “winning” effort…what would matter is who’s going to end up as champs at the end of the season…go on with your beda execution, as far as i can see, that’s the closest you’ll get to the lions’ necks…its a done deal, there is absolutely no threat this year…be afraid, BE VERY AFRAID, all you “cry babies”, ’cause when we roar back…..you’ll all be sorry…

  • pakito says:

    @greenlion

i think its not “beda execution” it could happen to other teams too. dont think beda should wait for the formal protest to be filed. marunong naman ata sumunod sa simple rules ang mga bedans.

at the end of the season, hindi naman mararamdaman ng beda ang 1 loss na yan. beda is still the team to beat. beda wont have any priviledge in the semis or finals even if they sweep the elims. para lang wala masabi ang mga tao na pasaway ang beda.

  • proud to be dolphins says:

Pinayagan nila ang negoy nila na magsuot ng maling uniform dapat masuspended sila sa ncaa forever dapat sa ncaa dapat gawin na lang open league so we can get yung mga import na ilan ang gusto nilang kunin e di magsawa sila tayo mga pinoy inter barangay lang o sumali na lang tayo sa liga pilipinas hahaha

  • DOLPO says:

    to proud to be dolphins,

in the first place IF YOU HAPPEN TO WATCH THE GAME, walang reklamo ang MANCOMM at ang mga referee nor CSB have noticed SAM’s JERSEY. pagkatapos pa nagreklamo which is illogical.

it’s funny na sasabihin nyong import si SAM, as if naman di import ung mga players nyo.

and oh by the way, i heard you’ll be out of the league because you can’t afford to pay 4MILLION for the NCAA membership. Kawawa naman. Taasan nyo tuition fee nyo!

pupunta kayo ng UAAP?haha, we’ll see the new basura.

  • atlast says:

A reading of the Rules just cited by the writer would indicate that San Beda did not violate any rules regarding the uniform….said rule is silent on whether on not the advertisement logo must be the same as that of the others in the team. In fact all it says is that it must have a specific distance from
the number of the player..walang kaso doon applying ekwe’s jersey as long as nagcomply sya doon sa distance between the logo and the number…

Kung babasahin ulit ang rule Rule 4.3.1 the advertisement (bantay bata, per ekwe’s uniform) is not part of the uniform..

we have a saying in statutory constuction that” when the rule does not provide so we must not”

tma ba ang claim ni Mr. Atayde…..I guess he needs to read the rules para masigurado nya na tama ang claim nya……Maliligo sya ng lecture sa mge legal hermeneutics ng SBC

  • beau belgoy says:

Hoy EKWELIZER isa kang basura!

  • LDC says:

Actually, the rules quoted by the author is only about the rules regarding the specification of the uniform and, so, was not the basis for the Mancom to conclude if there was a violation or not.

  • internal says:

the uniform is still the same,, its the logo!

  • proud2Bbedan says:

bsta tlga pag la salle.. alam nah!! hahaha xD

  • PG13 says:

  • RedHotBedan17 says:

I Hate it.. This issue sucks!!! y Do Green Blooded La Sallians/CSB Fellows try to look on other’s mistakes Wherein it was just a simple error, More likely this should not cause that much stir..If you look at this way, The teams from Taft had committed more “Serious” acts of cheating.. From the DLSU Mark Benitez’ Eligibilty to CSB’s great Game Fixing Player… Anything Else? They should check their grounds first before looking at simple mistakes…..

    Animo San Beda!!!!

  • knightprince says:

This conversation about a very little issue is just making things worse. True, that it was a mistake on Ekwe and the couching staff for not making sure that all players complied with the rules, but likewise, nobody can deny that beda won the game, no matter what everyone says. Perhaps the mancom can come up with a penalty for ekwe and perhaps the couching staff at fault for the slight incident, but such penalty must not be as harsh as giving the game to CSB. If we are to beat san beda, then lets beat them on the court. We can beat them and we surely can do it with integrity and honor on the court. Not outside…

besides if the mancom forfeits the game and gives the win to benilde, we all know still who is the better team between the two.

so lets just beat them on the court where it matters most!

    arriba letran!

  • RedHotBedan17 says:

We Bedans are humble enough to accept our faults..Well, as we Know “Rules are Rules”, If Sam committed a mistake, then Penalize him accoring to the books.. But dealing out the whole team with a game to CSB is ridiculous..as what knightprince said, the viewers know who was the better team between the two..

  • DOLPO says:

    to proud to be dolphins,

aber proof mo?his father is dying and excuse me, he went home to Nigeria.

back to the topic, magbayad muna kayo ng membership ng 4 MILLION PESOS at baka di pa kilalanin school you.

    POOR YOU!

  • ??? says:

its coaching staff not “couching staff”.peace

  • Mr. choi says:

    @ redhotbedan17

DLSU accepted the consequences and returned their championship trophy. Kaya wag mo sabihin na tingnan muna nila sarili nila, they really stand for what is right.

  • knightprince says:

    @ ???

    couching staff ang correct term!!!

  • kobe_24 says:

  • rhk111 says:

The question is, was there really a violation? As per the rules, it seems that there was no violation, correct me if I’m wrong.

If there was a violation, does the infraction require a forfeiture of the game, when the violation was very minor?

If they want a public apology or something, fine. But a forfeiture, when it is so glaringly obvious which team won?

    Please.

  • Maria says:

Pinsan nga, kaya pala. . .

@ oCHAMPYo – paterno, hudencial, angeles, and even aljamal is in the line-up di ngawang mkabalik ng beda in the past years.

FYI Champoy – San Beda was able to reach the F4 in 2004 against UPHDS which SBC lost in just 1 point, that team includes Bombeo, Hudencial, Aljamal, Paterno, Angeles… coach Nash Racela…

and Champoy- hindi kasalanan ng beda if Sam Ekwe chooses SBC as his college school, db?

and even other schools din naman may foreign players, even dlsu and admu, even CSJL before they have foreign player, yun nga lang not as dominating as sam ekwe, so better watch your word…

  • lion's_paw says:

@proud to be dolphins – utak langaw na taga PCU hehehe

“Pinayagan nila ang negoy nila na magsuot ng maling uniform dapat masuspended sila sa ncaa forever” – gung-gong mag isip k kaya? hehehe “MASUSPENDED” hehehehe mas matindi pa nga yung violation nyo compared to SBC magsasalita k n ng suspend forever ang SBC hehehe

  • Grrr! says:

  • Grrr! says:

as for the “negoy” bit, that is uncalled for and racist. a student from a christian should know better. a person is a christian by his actuation, not by the name of the school alone…

    @oJOMMZo

    peace.

  • oJOMMZo says:

Mancom ang dapat cchin tlga eh cnadya tlga after nung kontrata saka cnb na pwd maglaro dolphins na dapat nmn tlga is mglalaro 1yr suspensyon lng nmn tlga.

to all bedista un lng msasabi ko wag dn kayo mag angas kasi may reason dn nmn behind all the facts na ekwe is one the reason kung anu man posisyon ng skul nyo ngaun.. kaya nga may theory na what if* sa philosophy db

knulang lng tlga sa time ang dolphins in that championship game laking upset sana nun weeee..

sa nakikita ko ngaun Mancom ang dapat cchin sa lahat ng problema in the collegiate basketball.

sa case ng pcu this year

sa case nung uniform policy k ekwe

i.d policy or whatever reason is that…

sana bago mgstart alam na dapat ng lhat ayusin muna hndi ung bara bara.. and be fair naman sana pag gawa ng dcxon players at time ng students ang nsasayang eh
