FAR EASTERN University got back on track in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament after routing host University of the Philippines, 88-66, last July 17, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Tamaraws relied on veterans Benedict Fernandez and Marlon Adolfo to spearhead an early scoring blitz that resulted in a nine-point first quarter lead, 23-14, with Adolfo scoring nine of his squad’s total output.

“It is good start,” said Adolfo, who finished 3-of-3 from the field. “We really need to bounce back after blowing an 11-point lead against La Salle week and today is a new beginning to start winning.”

Fernandez, the most senior of the Tamaraws, poured in 16 points in 17 minutes, while second year center Aldrech Ramos delivered 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, along with eight rebounds and three blocks. The win is FEU’s second in three games.

“I’m satisfied with the way we played, especially with our big men. They will be tested if our opponent is a strong team like UST,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio. “It was our defense that gave us the victory. In our last game, we did not play defense.”

Jay Agbayani scored 12 points and grabbed five boards, while Martin Reyes had 11 points to go along with three assists for the Fighting Maroons, who lost their second straight game after beating National University in their opener.

UP has lost its last two matches by an average of 20.5 points.

FEU took a commanding 52-31 halftime lead after outgunning the Diliman outfit thanks to a 29-17 second quarter attack.

The Fighting Maroons managed to trim down the deficit to 46-55, but a 12-4 counter restored FEU’s double-digit lead, 67-50.

Mac Baracael had nine markers while Andy Barroca added eight for the Tamaraws, whose bench outscored the Fighting Maroons, 34-25.
FEU shot more triples (8-4) and hit more free throws (18-8) than UP.

    Dont Mind Me

But I was “suprised” that De Asis was only sent inside in the last 2:46 in the 4Q but his stint there didnt last more than a minute, i think.

    Too bad.
