Actually, the point I want to get at is this: there is no penalty that will be fair to both teams and still apply to all situations.

In the 90s I came across a coffee table style book commemorating 100 years of basketball. In it were two or three paragraphs about uniforms and here’s what I remember about it:

The uniform issue is nothing new, it is as old as basketball and that countless remedies have been tried.

In the “evolution� of a remedy, the penalty of forfeiture has become the best and most widely accepted penalty for two reasons:
1. It serves as an effective deterrent (according to the book, it was to clean up the notorious uniform issues in the 30s/40s, and it was successful),
2. It is the only penalty that protects the non-offending team in ALL situations.

It was an interesting read.

Here’s a bit of trivia I read somewhere (dunno if it’s true, though): No country can wear the same uniform design in 2 consecutive Olympics.

I wasn’t implying that my suggestions were the most appropriate. I just wanted to say that I still think a game forfeiture is a bit too much for a wrong uniform infraction.

It sort of makes a team lose out of a technicality. Parang nawalan ng sense yung basketball game kung ganun.

I just wanted to share my view that I believe in the rules and that they have to be enforced without exceptions to anyone; but at the same time I wanted to say how I felt about the wrong uniform=forfeiture rule.

A free throw in exchange for the contribution of an ineligible player, in this case 12 points and 20? Doesn’t sound fair to CSB to me.

OK, for argument’s sake let’s assume the infraction was discovered in the last minute of the game and Ekwe was benched. The question now is, how do you undo his 12 points and 20 rebounds, both of which clearly affected the outcome of the game?

A freethrow to the opposing team sounds fair enough for that. Or even benching the player for the entire game.

But regardless, rules are rules, and hate to say it but I really do believe that it’s a bad trait of ours as Filipinos. Di na nga mahilig sumunod sa batas, nagpapalusot pa pag mahuli.

Back to Basketball/UAAP/NCAA… I’m not a fan of all the rules, but I still believe they should be honored for the rest of the season. Changes should be made, but not in the middle of the season.

well according to the newspapers, sabi ni Atayde, the CSB representative, not the writer of this article, that the complaint is already with the CSB President, so it’s up to the CSB President if they will submit the formal complaint to the NCAA Mancom…

i read the rules posted here and commented by Datu Pula.. the “intent to play” part is ridiculous.. the penalty should be lowered down to a technical and the other team should be rewarded only with a free throw.. you can only play with 5 players on each team and sometimes, after a time out or when the game starts, 6 players who all “intend to play” enter a court, it happens sometimes and the refs sometimes don’t catch it right away and when they do, they usually get a technical… NOT FORFEITURE OF THE GAME! fielding 6 players in your team on the court is far worse than having a misprint logo on one player’s uniform!

an untucked uniform is also considered not proper but the refs usually just remind the players to tuck their uniforms in, and i haven’t heard one get a technical for that, although they could… but again, the refs, even Frankie Lim said he didn’t notice it, he didn’t say that he should get away with it.. everybody here is thinking why the CSB people waited ’till the game was over, where they could have told the refs and the refs would’ve probably have given San Beda technical fouls where the CSB would be awarded only technical freethrows, and maybe not let Ekwe come back in without the “proper” uniform..

but I think CSB has been waiting to tell the refs because they’ve stopped reading their playbooks and started reading the NCAA law book and they saw that they could actually win the game by forfeiture and made sure about it and tell it when the refs or the officials could no longer do anything about it, and that is after the game… hehehe..

style niyo bulok! hehe.. lol.. but rules are rules and the CSB has outsmarted us on this one and caught us offguard, and of course, the NCAA Mancom just love following the rules, old rules like this one and newly made up rules like the 1 foreign player on the court rule, etc… CSB would get their win and they deserve it, they studied the NCAA rules carefully during the game (kaya nga sila lalo natambakan eh, ibang diskarte na pinag-aaralan nila), and they waited until the game was over (perfect timing!).. the refs would have no choice on the small infraction.. dito ako napabilib sa DLSU-CSB coaching/official staff at tinalo nila dito ang San Beda coaching staff.. meron hindi napansin ang San Beda coaching staff na napansin ng CSB side at nalaman nila kung kailan dapat sila umangal para mapanalo nila ang game.. LOL!

If I have misinterpreted your question, then I apologize. It’s just that the relationship between my cousin and I have been repeatedly brought up as a reason for my writing about this San Beda - CSB issue.

I have expressed my opinion on the matter of forfeitute in favor of the lions in the absence of the rules you’ve just shared with us.

Though I feel a game should be won or lost in the court, the rules are clear and there is NOTHING unjust, unfair or irregular if the forfieture is handed down.

You are such a judgemental person. Why don’t you read and understand what I have posted. Did you see any mention that I believe CSN should get the win. My position is for San Beda to forfeit the game but not award the victory to CSB. That way, the winner will be the rule of law.

On topic, this is the best game I’ve seen so far. Kudos to both teams for giving us one hell of a game. James gave us a glimpse of his A-game and so as Mark from UST. Well, congrats Mr.Atayde, your team had the first bite. I’m sure the second time would be even better, an overtime maybe? At least a repeat of last year! *wink*

yes maybe its time the rules on wrong uniform used in the NCAA OR UAAP are changed or amended.

Rule #6
Playing Uniform and School ID

6.1 All athletes shall wear the OFFICIAL PLAYING TEAM UNIFORM in all the games/matches of the current NCAA Season.

6.5 Any athlete whose playing uniform does not conform to the
preceding rules shall be INELIGIBLE to participate in a given game/match.

9.2 A team shall lose the game by FORFEITURE if and when:

9.2.1 An INELIGIBLE athlete is fielded or enters the playing court with an intent to play. He and his team shall lose the game/match BY FORFEITURE.

The balance between the infraction and the consequence should be determined and agreed upon. I personally disagree with the forfeiture because I do not know what the intention of those who crafted the rule were.

What happened here is that a rule was made and a penalty accorded to that penalty. Now exceptions are being made that were not there when the rule was apporoved.

It then becomes a set of guidelines based on exceptions rather than strict implementation of the rules.

The uniform may not have affected the outcome of the game but shouldn’t this have been thought off when that particular rule was made.

Now who is at fault? Is it the party that committed the infraction? Is it the other team who complied with the rules? Or is it the body that crafted the rules? From that we should base our opinions.

i remember one MIT game last season when the shorts of one player had the thin red stipes instead of the thicker stripes used for that season. of course, wala naman nag reklamo dahil yung violator (MIT) ay natalo.

i’m not a bedan fan but it’s grossly unfair to deprive them of the win based on a miniscule hardly noticeable difference in the uniform worn by ekwe.
