La Salle Wins Again! Ekwe May Lose!

Sorry for the late report but I was extremely busy with the FHM 100 Sexiest Women show because I have a client who was a major sponsor. Had to watch the game on TV before the show.
La Salle and UST are truly legitimate contenders in UAAP Season 71. What a game it was, both from the players and the coaching staff of both teams.
From start to finish, it was an evenly matched game. While UST got the production from the players they expected, La Salle was getting its points from the ever reliable JV Casio and some of the most unlikely sources.
First it was James Mangahas who showed his moves. He surprised many people with the way he would post up and drive. He scored with less than a minute to go on a driving layup that gave SLAU a slim 1 point lead. If Mangahas continues to play like this, he will definitely raise the DLSU team a few notches.
Then, the player I call “feast or famine definitely had a feast today. Bader Malabes burned the scoreboard with his clutch 3 point shooting, especially in the end game where he hit his last 3 pointer killing a UST rally. Malabes has been know to either hit his 3 pointers or miss them really bad. Today he was on target.
With LA Revilla also shining in the point guard position, La Salle took the Tigers to the limit and came away with a 1 point victory, 85-84.
But it was the defense that really made the day for La Salle. With 6 steals, La Salle converted on 5 of them. Rebounding went UST’s way. With Jervy Cruz dominating the paint, UST had 10 more rebounds than La Salle.
With a chance to win the game, Pido Jarencio set a play for the last shot. Then Jeric Fortuna, a former La Salle Zobel Greenie, took a hurried shot that left Coach Pido stunned. The rookie was actually playing well and could have been the hero but instead turned out to be the goat.
La Salle shot pretty well from the free throw line but it was their end game composure that sealed the win for them.UST is an awesome team so other teams beware. The Tigers are solid and they will come back stronger each game.
The officiating was mediocre at best and still a big question mark that will leave the UAAP a black eye this season if it is not remedied soon. A NABRO referee was recently suspended for that phantom foul called on
Barroca in the La Salle FEU game that La Salle won. The said referee is even the Vice President of NABRO.
On the NCAA front, it seems that San Beda’s victory over College of Saint Benilde is under question because Sam Ekwe was not wearing the right uniform.
Under NCAA rules, a player who is not in proper uniform, will be penalized by forfeiture of the game. There are already a number of precedents to this rule that a player’s team had to forfeit the game.
How could the coaching staff not have noticed this? How could Ekwe not been aware that he was not wearing the wrong uniform? Well, rules are rules. Let’s see how the NCAA handles this.

rules are not superior to the essence and spirit of sportsmanship. how can you allow a badly beaten losing team to win by default? it just does not make sense. if ekwe is at fault, then suspend ekwe for the next game but don’t forfeit in favor fo csb. san beda’s loss will be in the hardcourt agasinst the hands of letran or the bomebers. it should not in the mancom board that will uphold a silly and nonsensical complaint by a final four wannabee who definitely cannot be.
ang ganda na ng takbo ng NCAA this year tapos papasukan ng ganitong katarantaduhan, just doesn’t feel right.
the more equitable, fair and just compormise is to suspend ekwe for the next game but not for san beda to forfeit the game. this way the rules are not totally ignored.

if sam ekwe wore the wrong uniform, there are rules that have been established in the league to deal with this and should be implemented. rules were made to instill order and discipline among all of us.
if the rules and the penalties associated with it are not imposed even in games for the youth, then what are we teaching our children who are the future of our country. let’s not continue the culture of palusot and san beda will have to deal with this costly mistake and that should be a lesson for all
as the saying goes, let the axe fall where it may.

Forfeiture is a bit harsh for a very slight infraction..maybe just fine the team a fixed amount or something.
Great game indeed..the game was decided in the last minute..it had the feel of a final four game..preview maybe?

San Beda did not only win by 1 or 2 points. They won fair and square in this game. They should only penalize the player not the whole team. Besides, it is the referee’s responsibility to issue a warning before the game even started.
A slight difference in uniform does not constitute a forfeit. Nobody even noticed it until Benilde lost. It is the same color, same number, just an older sponsor design on the jersey.
Mancom should learn to be fair to all the players and teams - otherwise, they need to grow up and be replace ASAP. If they even consider this as an issue, it would be a shame.
Congratulations to DLSU!

Congratulations to LaSalle! It was a great game! Jeric Fortuna may have bungled the most crucial play in the last part but he did well 99% of the game and he’d be a very good PG for years to come for UST. Since the time of Bal David and Dale Singson, UST never really had a solid PG. Japs isn’t there yet. Who I’d like to see step up too is Clark Bautista. There was too much hype on this guy pre-season. Was it all just hype?

The protest has not been filed. I cannot divulge what actions will be taken but your assumptions this early in making your conclusions may not be accurate.
Many years ago, I can;t remember which player it was, but La Salle lost a protest because the said player was wearing the previous year’s uniform
I agree that it really had no bearing in the game, but then again, it should be noted that things like this should have beem seen by the team management.
So in th end, what are rules for? If it does not matter than it should not be made into a rule. Thats the bottom line.
If you run a red light and didnt get into an accident, does that make the action right.
There are just too many rules that dont matter yet there are matters that have no rules.

the way to win the ball game is in the basketball c ourt, not in the mancom board. since the spirit of sportmanship has been superceded by winning at all cost (this is true for all teams -NO EXCEPTIONS), i forsee san beda losing the game by default. its crazy. ekwe was not wearing the red jersy but the white so how could he be not in proper uniform. only if he was wearing a letran or a cardinals jersey should the game be forfeited. ang mga utak berde lang ang makakaisip ng ganitong kabalbalan. shame on them.

ano ba ibig sabihin ng NABRO? National AMATEUR Basketball Referees Organization, mga amateur naman pala yan e. dapat yung PROFESSIONAL referees ang nasa game.

Even Commissioner Joe Lipa didn’t notice that the uniform was any different. If the name at the back, school color (in this game SBC’s light jersey) and number are correct, I don’t see any reason why they should honor the protest.

why’d the refs let the game go on assuming they could’ve noticed ekwe was wearing a different uniform in the first place?
