San Beda survives upset-hungry Stags in overtime

SAN BEDA College relied on its championship experience to take a close 84-83 overtime win against San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the 84th NCAA seniors basketball competition last July 14, 2008 at the Pasay Astrodome.
San Beda’s go-to-guy guard Pong Escobal, who topscored for his team with 21 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, scored on a go-ahead lay-up with 20.4 seconds left in overtime to lift the Red Lions to their third straight victory in as many games.
“We can’t afford to lose, we are the league’s best team here, said Escobal, who finished 3-of-5 in the field. “San Sebastian was very determined to beat us, but the good thing is we delivered in the endgame.
Despite tying the Letran Knights atop the team standings, Red Lions head coach Frankie Lim was not satisfied with the way his wards played.
“We struggled a lot in the first half, and that was not the San Beda Red Lions basketball that I know of, Lim said. “Good thing, our zone defense clicked in the final quarter and during overtime. But we cannot allow this to happen again.
San Sebastian took a surprising 67-56 lead at the end of third quarter after outscoring San Beda, 24-17, in that span behind the impressive shooting displays of Jimbo Aquino and Vergel Zulueta.
The Red Lions, however, leaned on Escobal, Ogie Menor and third-stringer Kris Taupa to hold the hot-shooting Stags to just seven points in the final canto. San Beda’s offense kicked in in the fourth quarter as the Stags went cold from the field, going scoreless in the first seven minutes of the payoff period.
After Stags stalwart Jim Viray’s triple that tied the count at 71, Menor split his free throws before Escobal sank two of his own in the final minute to give San Beda a 74-71 lead with 12.4 ticks left.
San Sebastian rookie Jonathan Semira, who had eight points in the game, had other ideas, however. He drilled in a game-tying trey with 0.7 left to force the five-minute extension.
In the extra period, Viray, who tallied 11 points, gave San Sebastian an 83-80 lead with 1:43 left on the clock. Nigerian center Sam Ekwe responded with a crucial putback, which preceded Escobal’s game-breaking basket.
The Stags tried to steal the show, but point guard Pamboy Raymundo hesitated on driving to the hoop as an eager Ekwe defended the middle. He instead passed the ball to Viray, whose shot attempt was way off the mark.
Ekwe had a monster game with 17 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, while Menor finished with 13 markers and 12 boards. The Catanduanes-born Taupa had nine points off the bench.
“They [the Red Lions] showed a lot of character down the stretch, they refused to lose, said Lim.
Jason Ballesteros led San Sebastian with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Jimbo Aquino chipped in with 13 for the Stags, who fell to 1-3.
San Beda had the advantage in the rebounding department, 53-50, as well as steals, 15-7. The Red Lions also converted on more free throws (21-of-32) than the Stags (11-of-12).
Individual Scores:
San Beda 84 – Escobal 21, Ekwe 17, Menor 13, Taupa 9, Hermida 8, Marcelo 6, Gamalinda 5, Tirona 2, Lanete 2, Tecson 1.
San Sebastian 83 – Ballesteros 16, Aquino 13, Viray 11, Najorda 10, Saquillo 9, Semira 8, Raymundo 5, Zulueta 5, Bulawan 4, Maconocido 2.
Quarter Scores: 19-20; 39-43; 56-67; 74-74; 84-83

Congratulations to both the teams (San Beda and the Stags)
It’s very unfair to say that our school bribed the referees. There are also questionable calls that were called against San Beda during the 1st half. And sobrang dami nun.. I was there.. Well I can’t put the blame on the referees, since, they really can’t see everything that happens in the game (they are only human). And I guess, that is how the game is played. What separates the Men from the boys are their talent, perseverance, hardwork and willingness to win, not by mere mistakes acquired by the ref.
Go San Beda Fight!! I know this is again our time..God Bless!

bakit pag natatalo ang dami dahilan kung bakit natalo? just accept the end game result…
king cardinal - a win is a win it doesnt matter if a team wins in a dozen or just a point…
It only shows that San Beda have championship experience, composure and matured na yung mga go to guys nila…
During 99 to 03 season when SBC was having a hard time winning, may mga close game din kami na kagaya nyan pero as bedans masaya pa din kami dahil maganda nilaro ng SBC…
see you sa 2nd round

ganun?

@i hate the ref!
your opinion does count, pero sana may makuha kang mga video, para ma analyze, at kung meron nga, punta ka sa policy board, magfile ka ng reklamo, sayang lang talaga at hindi televise ang game.
peace.

TSK2… MR. Frankie Lim Ano ba?

In the post-game interview, Coach Frankie Lim correctly pointed out that the other teams are familiar with San Beda by now. They are catching up and come prepared against the Red Lions. Yes, they know how to exploit SBC’s most major weakness: the lack of a CONSISTENT, high-percentage outside shooter. From outside, even Escobal can do it most of the time but not all the time. That’s why the other teams are playing zone to force SBC to shoot from outside. That’s exactly how SBC was beaten by UE in the pre-season tournatments.
Fortunately for the Red Lions, they obviously have the deepest bench in the league right now and someone always steps up to somehow upset the opposing team’s defensive plans. In this game, it was Taupa. Fortunately for them also, no other NCAA team have the firepower of, say, UE who can burn them from outside to negate SBC’s tremendous advantage inside.
Nice game, Baste!
Go San Beda Fight!!!

wow. i was in my philo class this afternoon and then this first year student came into our classroom and said “panalo San Beda, 84-83, overtime.” then the first opponent that came into my mind was JRU but no, it was SSC-R. but i got to give it to the stags, that’s one hell of a game and the fact that it’s against the defending champions. pero wala tayong magagawa, heart of a champion namayani. again, hats off to the stags but the BIG W is going to mendiola.

Credit to SSC-R for putting the Lions to the test. I’ve never seen the Lions pushed back against the wall like this since they lost to Letran last season.
But i think that the Lions will learn from this and improve their games and perform better in their next games.
Expect them to show the heart of a champion that they’ve been manifesting for the past seasons!
Go for 3-peat! ANIMO San Beda!

Good game for the Stags, they really show their stuff against the defending champions, and commend sir Gallent on that, and as for the Red Lions, they show the character of a champion team even though they were behind by 11 at the end of 3rd quarter, they bring out the good stuff toward the crucial moments of the game, it was a great game for both squads, too bad it was not telecast for basketball fans to see, it is definitely a cardiac game.
Animo San Beda!
