Growling Tigers gobble up helpless Fighting Maroons

THE University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers ran wild at the expense of a team hoping for better days.
The Gold and Black of España walloped host University of the Philippines, 94-75, to nail their first win in the 71st UAAP seniors basketball tournament last July 12, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Forward Dylan Ababou hit nine of his 20 points in the second quarter to jumpstart the Tigers’ ferocious attack, which helped transform a five-point first quarter deficit and into an insurmountable 61-43 halftime lead.
“We started bad and we did not box out well, said Ababou, who finished 7-of-10 from the field. “Good thing everybody stepped up in the second period and we did not blink.
Big man Jervy Cruz made his presence felt in the shaded area by tallying 15 points and grabbing four boards, while rookie guard Jeric Fortuna, a former De La Salle-Zobel playmaker, chipped in with 11 markers off the bench.
The Growling Tigers’ victory improves their record to 1-1 after an opening day loss to the University of the East. UP, meanwhile, dropped its first game in two assignments after beating National University last week.
Veteran Mark Canlas and Francis Allera had 11 points apiece as well, while guard Japs Cuan added nine points for coach Pido Jarencio’s charges.
“We just come out prepared every game. Not all my players are a hundred percent. Jervy [Cruz] and Dylan [Ababou] are recovering from injuries. But like what I said, this is a team of surprises. Watch out for the next one,” Jarencio said.
Center Magi Sison had 20 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Fighting Maroons.
Things seemed bright for the State University as it posted a 17-9 spread in the middle of the first quarter, thanks to the impressive play of Sison and Jay Agbayani, among others.
But Cruz, Ababou and Allera got things going for the Growling Tigers as they not only erased the deficit, but erected a double-digit advantage as early as the second canto.
UST played without sophomore sniper Khasim Mirza, who is recovering from a flu, and rookie point guard Allen Maliksi, who is still recovering from an ACL injury incurred last February.
The Tigers shot 33-of-65 (50.8%) from the field, compared to UP’s measly 22-of-73 (30.1%).
Individual Scores:
UST 94 – Ababou 20, Cruz 15, Fortuna 11, Canlas 11, Allera 11, Cuan 9, Fenequito 6, Camus 6, Bautista 3, Taylor 2, Wong 0, Vargas 0, Afuang 0, Gile 0.

nice game shown by the tigers here. I like the rotation of the players made by coach Pido. The rookies did a great job lead by Jeric Fortuna who had 3 rainbow shot markers. Chris is arguably the next Dylan in the making. As expected, Jervy and Dylan has been consistently dominating the boards and points for the legion of black gold, black white. Surprisingly, Japs Cuan has shown vast improvement in his free throws making 5 in 7 attempts if I’m not mistaken. Evidently, in this game, there’s a bad officiating by the referees (something that’s not new, eh?). As has been observed by others too, I noticed especially when there were crucial/questionable calls, these referees were reporting to the commissioner as if they were trying to validate these calls to him. How many times I noticed too that commissioner was calling the attention of the referees as if trying to remind them the contents of the rule book. Well I believe UAAP fans have been vigilant since the start of the opening games. I cannot speak in behalf of the others but as far as I can tell, consistent bad officiating is not healthy for UAAP or to any sports league for that matter.
I’m looking forward for the next UST game coming this Thursday. Will it be a repeat or better performance from the recent victory by the tigers and take the first blow against the boys of Franz or the gang green will go for the two straight win??! ooh.. this will be very exciting! See you at Ultra!
….Viva Santo Tomas!!

Like I said previously, one win does not make a season. So it goes with a loss, it is not the end of the world. There will be more of each, maybe even more of the latter! Do not lose heart or faith UP faithful, as it is a long uphill climb for the UP lads. With the good leadership in place, keep the faith, and the reward will come soon enough. The goal I believe is respectability, and eventually the Final Four.
