Mapua clips struggling PCU Dolphins

HOST Mapua Institute of Technology used a blistering fourth quarter assault to defeat the Philippine Christian University Dolphins, 77-71, last July 7, 2008 and grab its second straight win in the 84th NCAA seniors basketball tournament at the Pasay Astrodome.
The Cardinals relied on their patented up-tempo game in the second half, particularly in the last period where they outscored the PCU Dolphins, 22-17, en route to their second win in three outings.
“We were confident we could come back after trailing by as many as eight points in the second half,” said Mapua coach Leo Isaac. “It was a big advantage that Beau Belga and Leimar Navarro got into early foul trouble.”
PCU stars Belga, Navarro and Lisztian Amparado all fouled out early in the fourth quarter, giving Mapua the chance to capitalize and embark on a 15-5 run capped by Ian Mazo’s basket with 4:09 remaining, giving the Cardinals a 68-59 lead.
After Belga’s putback, Mapua swingman Kelvin dela Peña hit a triple and TG Guillermo scored on a fastbreak lay-up to increase their lead to 12 at 73-61, with 3:31 left.
Forward Mark Sarangay scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds to lead the victors, while dela Peña and Neil Pascual added 12 each. Allan Mangahas and Jonathan Banal had nine and eight markers, respectively.
“We want respect as hosts, so we are playing our best,” said Sarangay, who started Mapua’s onslaught in the fourth period after hitting two straight baskets. “It’s still a long, long way to go though.”
PCU hauled down more rebounds than Mapua, 41-39, but the Cardinals registered more assists, 17-16. Mapua shot 55.6 percent from the field compared to PCU’s 54.8 percent clip.
Mapua improved to 2-1 behind solo leader Letran (2-0) and second-running San Beda College (1-0). PCU, meanwhile, dropped to the cellar with a 0-2 slate.
Belga and Navarro paced the Dolphins with 15 points apiece, with Belga pulling down seven boards.
Individual Scores:
Mapua 77 – Sarangay 13, dela Peña 12, N. Pascual 12, Mangahas 9, Banal 8, Guillermo 6, Mazo 6, Soriano 5, J. Pascual 2, Acosta 2, Palomique 2, Ranises 0.

it would be better if you meet CSJL or JRU in the finals. if it’s SBC, the series would be a sleeper as it would be repeats of the the first game this season. but no dout, MIT has a good chance to make the finals. after a losuy start, everything seems to be in right gear now. an acid test would be if MIT preavails over ite Muralla neighbor whne they meet next week. pagnatalo nila ang knights, matindi na ang cardinals.
