Viray, Stags steal game from JRU

WHEN in doubt, the San Sebastian Stags always turn to Jim Viray.
Once again, the hotshot from Puerto Princesa City, Palawan didn’t disappoint, burying a clutch three with 27.5 ticks left to lift San Sebastian College-Recoletos past the dazed Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 57-54 in the 84th National Collegiate Athletic Association seniors basketball tournament at the Pasay (formerly Cuneta) Astrodome last July 4, 2008.
“It was really a tough game and I don’t know how we survived it, said Viray, who was the only Stag who scored in double figures with 14 points. “I’m really frustrated about my shooting. I just considered myself lucky.
Viray finished with a measly 1-for-5 clip beyond the arc, but his solitary three proved to be the biggest shot of the game as the Stags barged into the win column after losing their first two games.
“We just played good defense. That’s what we lack, said San Sebastian coach Jorge Gallent, whose team lost to Perpetual Help (55-60) and Mapua (80-86). “I just told them we are a defensive running team, so we need to work like that.
JRU led for the majority of the game with John Wilson inflicting most of the damage. The shooting guard scored 14 points after a forgettable first game against Letran, and sunk a crucial trey that knotted the count at 54 before Viray’s dagger.
The Heavy Bombers sustained their momentum from the opening half, which they led, 29-20, in the third quarter. JR Sena delivered 11 of his 15 points in the third quarter to keep his squad ahead in a low-scoring affair.
San Sebastian, however, countered with a 19-11 run in the fourth quarter. Playmaker Pamboy Raymundo hit a triple with 3:45 left in the fourth, and fellow guard Raymond Maconocido scored on a jumper that gave the lead to the Stags, 54-51, with 2:22 remaining.
With the loss, JRU dropped to a league-worst 0-2 slate. It next faces the CSB Blazers on Monday, July 7.
Individual Scores:
San Sebastian 57 – Viray 14, Maconocido 9, Najorda 8, Raymundo 8, Aquino 6, Ballesteros 6, Zulueta 4, Bulawan 2, Saquillo 0, Delgado 0, Semira 0.
JRU 54 – Sena 15, Wilson 14, Nocom 6, Cagoco 6, Hayes 5, Almario 3, Matute 2, Lopez 2, Bulangis 1, Kabigting 0, Agas 0, Njei 0, Pradas 0.
Quarter Scores: 8-17; 20-29; 38-43; 57-54
