Jazul explodes for 37, leads Knights to victory

FOR the second straight game, the Letran Knights leaned on one man to make all the difference.
Sweet-shooting RJ Jazul torched the Pasay Astrodome with 37 points and helped tow Colegio de San Juan de Letran to a scintillating 88-75 win over College of Saint Benilde in the 84th National Collegiate Athletic Association seniors basketball tournament last July 4, 2008.
“Wow, I just can’t believe I recorded my personal high, said Jazul, who shot 7-of-11 beyond the arc, tallied 5-of-8 in the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. “It seems I just found my range today.
Jazul filled the void left by forward Dino Daa, who suffered a sprain in a workout the other day, also tallied six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Daa led the Knights in their opening day win over Jose Rizal University with 20 points.
“Even we performed bad in defense in first half, we were able to trail only by four points at the half. If RJ [Jazul] didn’t sustain his great shooting, I’m sure we would have already been beaten by Saint Benilde, Letran mentor Louie Alas.
The Blazers, who led by as much as 10 points early in the game, failed to register their first three-game winning streak in three years, falling to a 2-1 win-loss mark.
The Knights trailed 41-45 at the half, but Jazul sustained his 21-point first half outburst in the third quarter to give his team a 64-59 spread entering the fourth.
Jazul, curiously a native of Pasay City, was unstoppable in the remaining minutes, burying a three-pointer that gave Letran its first double-digit lead of the game, 73-62, at the 6:35 mark.
Kojack Melegrito contributed 13 markers for the Knights, while John Foronda and Rey Guevarra combined for 18 points as the Muralla-based squad won its second outing in as many games.
Angelo Montecastro led CSB with 15 points and six rebounds while Garri Sevilla added 13 points for the Blazers.
Individual Scores:
Letran 88 – Jazul 37, Melegrito 13, Foronda 9, Guevarra 9, Cortes 5, Latonio 4, Dangcal 4, Belencion 3, del Rosario 2, Gutilban 2, Ranises 0, Cabonce 0.
CSB 75 – Montecastro 15, Sevilla 13, Mañalac 11, Dalanon 10, Manlapaz 10, Morial 7, Umlas 3, David 2, Johnston 2, Abolucion 2.
Quarter Scores: 13-21; 41-45; 64-59; 88-75

jazul is another louie alas’ superhoopstar emerging from the shadows of enrile and bautista. even this guy they called kojack has fantastic moves. may also be one of alas’ future cage diamonds. looks like another jason castro (the cager not the idol) in the making.
jazul is ray allen

Grrr! actually, kojack melegrito was touted before as the next ronjay enrile in the senior’s but due to his weak performances in the last 3 seasons, he became quite popular with his defense and not in his usually offensive skills that he showed in his junior days as a squire. Maybe this season I hope that he will show us more of his offensive capabilities and it will surely help the knights to have a deep rotation with their guard line up.

Hope we can rebound from this loss. Benilde failed to defend well in the second half while Letran clamped down on us, not allowing us to run(and score). Halfcourt game is not CSB’s game. We need to run to win. Enough said.

Just a simple meaningless effort as what I can describe…If he (jazul) was that consistent sana natalo nila ang Beda..Haha!!! kahit parehas pa sila gmawa ni Bisaya (Daa) eh wala pa rin sense sa mga Bedista!!! Go Red Lions Roar!!!

Sayang nga, kasi nalampasan lang ni RJ Jazul BY A POINT yung 36 pts na ginawa ni Ronjay Enrile 5 years ago
Kulang na lang lampasan niya yung 42 pts na ginawa ni Lim Eng Beng.

sorry… SF pala si Viray. still i like his game.
Grrr!, ang alam ko po SG si Wilson. kasi dba ang SF ng JRU ay si Nchotu. anyway, either SF or SG, magaling pa din sya. sana nga lang manalo na ang JRU.

@ric - former JRU’s hotshot Marco Polo “Mackoy” Fajardo scored 41pts. vs. CSJL, where he was hitting in all cylinders, i think ‘03 season or ‘04 season, a one point shy against Lim Eng Beng’s 42 pts performance…
a nice performance by Jazul

@ Red Lion Roar - Don’t be to overconfident boy… you should be thankfull that you have an import… Kami and also for the rest of the teams in the NCAA Pinoy or half pinoys ang mga top scorers namin hindi import. You should be thankful and don’t boast too much!

I’m just wondering if San Beda can win a championship without any import? because they only became champions after so many years when an talented import came to play for them. lucky you that most teams have an all-filipino line up. So to the rest teams, Let’s pray that we can get an import of the same caliber… JUST TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FEILD…

i am a fan of every basketball talent. =)
* infairness to James Sena, he’s good.
* and Sam Ekwe, i think he’s gonna be better this season bcoz i noticed.. ajile n xa e! ndi n xa mbagal. better perimeter shooting. higher leap. olah! =)
* we all should watch out for more of Jason Ballesteros of the Stags.
* as of now, ndi q p nra2mdaman ung presence ng reigning MVP. wer’s kelvin dela pena?!
* i wanna see how Beau Belga could catch up with the lost time. (he did good in the PBL this past season.)
* oh! that Wilson of JRU.. he’s ok!
* still.. no one could beat RJ Jazul for me! hehe. He’s the best player in the NCAA today! (at least, in my opinion.)

Jason Ballesteros is flat footed, I think he will have a hard time in improving his game although nag improve na ng konti yung game nya…
Beau Belga - he is good pero mayabang hehe nag flex pa ng muscles sa game nila against SBC taba naman nya hehehehe
