FOR the second straight game, the Letran Knights leaned on one man to make all the difference.
Sweet-shooting RJ Jazul torched the Pasay Astrodome with 37 points and helped tow Colegio de San Juan de Letran to a scintillating 88-75 win over College of Saint Benilde in the 84th National Collegiate Athletic Association seniors basketball tournament last July 4, 2008.
“Wow, I just can’t believe I recorded my personal high, said Jazul, who shot 7-of-11 beyond the arc, tallied 5-of-8 in the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. “It seems I just found my range today.
Jazul filled the void left by forward Dino Daa, who suffered a sprain in a workout the other day, also tallied six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Daa led the Knights in their opening day win over Jose Rizal University with 20 points.
“Even we performed bad in defense in first half, we were able to trail only by four points at the half. If RJ [Jazul] didn’t sustain his great shooting, I’m sure we would have already been beaten by Saint Benilde, Letran mentor Louie Alas.
The Blazers, who led by as much as 10 points early in the game, failed to register their first three-game winning streak in three years, falling to a 2-1 win-loss mark.
The Knights trailed 41-45 at the half, but Jazul sustained his 21-point first half outburst in the third quarter to give his team a 64-59 spread entering the fourth.
Jazul, curiously a native of Pasay City, was unstoppable in the remaining minutes, burying a three-pointer that gave Letran its first double-digit lead of the game, 73-62, at the 6:35 mark.
Kojack Melegrito contributed 13 markers for the Knights, while John Foronda and Rey Guevarra combined for 18 points as the Muralla-based squad won its second outing in as many games.
Angelo Montecastro led CSB with 15 points and six rebounds while Garri Sevilla added 13 points for the Blazers.
