CSB surpasses win total from 2007, stops Altas

COLLEGE of Saint Benilde sustained its strong opening stance in the endgame to fend off the pesky University of Perpetual Help Altas, 61-54, last July 2, 2008 in the 84th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Pasay (formerly Cuneta) Astrodome.
In a game where both baskets seemed smaller than usual, the Blazers and the Altas combined for an atrocious 7-of-24 shooting clip in the last canto. The Blazers’ never-say-die attitude, however, gifted them their first winning streak of any kind since 2006, and already doubled their win total from last year.
“I’m very happy. The fighting spirit of my players is now there,â€? said Blazers mentor Gee Abanilla. “Despite the fact that we could not execute our plays in the first three quarters, my players did not give up and stayed fighting.â€?
Forward Jacob Manlapaz led CSB with 14 points, while opening-game hero Archie David scored 13, including a critical three-pointer that pushed the Taft-based outfit ahead, 57-52, with 2:46 remaining in the final period.
The Altas threatened at 54-57, but guard Jeff Morial intercepted a Franz Dysam pass, and then converted on an undergoal stab after receiving a dish from Garri Sevilla to give the Blazers a 59-54 advantage with 20 seconds remaining.
Sevilla chipped in with 11 points, while Morial contributed with seven markers.
Altas big man Raffy Ynion scored 18 points and had seven rebounds, with Dysam adding 10 for Perpetual, which fell to a 1-1 slate after thwarting San Sebastian on opening day.
Saint Benilde, which currently leads the team standings at 2-0, took a season-opening 69-65 win against Philippine Christian University.
Individual Scores:
CSB 61 – Manlapaz 14, David 13, Sevilla 11, Morial 7, Montecastro 6, Mañalac 6, Johnston 2, Dalanon 2, Abolucion 0, Santos 0.
UPHSD 54 – Ynion 18, Dysam 10, Balboa 8, M. Kong 7, Mejos 5, Reyes 4, Salanga 2, Galabin 0.
Quarter Scores: 18-18; 33-33; 47-48; 61-54

So far so good! I watched the replay just a while back at channel 33 Sky cable, because I wasnt able to watch the game, and I concluded that it could have gone either way. Archie David’s three pointer just saved the day for the Blazers yet again.

The CSB Blazers at 2-0, while the SSC-R Stags at 0-2? Are we in the twilight zone? :D Just kidding.
The Blazers are just following up on their good showing in the pre-season tournaments. The Stags, though, have been a disappointment, projected as being at least a Final 4 team this season.

Congrats to CSB Blazers. I’m a Red Lion supporter, but I salute your new coach Gee Abanilla. He seems to be a smart & humble guy. Keep it up, you’re an additional asset to NCAA.

Being an asst to Yeng Guiao at Redbull must have helped him learn to bring out the best in his team despite lacking in talent. Sana tuloy-tuloy na ito.

@drakul: actually were not lacking in talent eh. Its either Coach Caloy was bad for us, or its just that players are not suited for his system. Players like Archie David really blossomed this season. Hope tuloy tuloy na nga. Animo Benilde!
@Prophet: I guess he’s ok because he hit a three just seconds after that fall.=)

in the blogs some letran students are reporting having seen daa on crutches. If he doesn’t play it increases the probability of a benilde win.

sa tingin ko makakapasok ang benilde sa final 4 ngayon dahil sa ipinapakita nila ngayong season sa ncaa lalo na may bagong coach si Gee Abanilla and some good players na rookie pa lang pero maganda na ang ipinapakita. Good luck Benilde.
