Saint Benilde topples returning PCU

COLLEGE of Saint Benilde went on to a fourth quarter scoring rampage to pull off a come-from-behind 69-65 win over returning Philippine Christian University in the opening of the 84th NCAA men’s seniors basketball tournament last June 28, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Down by nine at the half and eight after the third, the Blazers surged to an impressive 19-7 fourth quarter run to register their first win and break an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season.

“It is a big win for us,” said newly-appointed CSB coach Gee Abanilla. “PCU gave us a good fight but I know my boys will play well.”

Guard Angelo Montecastro racked up 15 points, while Archie David scored 13 and Aaron Umlas added 10 markers for the Blazers, who owned the league’s worst record last year at 1-11. Curiously, the Blazers’ lone win in Season 83 came in their opening game as well against the Mapua Cardinals.

David fired a pivotal triple to give Saint Benilde the go-ahead basket and a 65-62 edge with 1:37 left to go in the game. The Dolphins never got the lead back.

Beau Belga, PCU’s team captain, scored only four points and had three fouls early, forcing head coach Joel Dualan to bench him.

Lei Mar Navarro scored 15 points to pace the Dolphins.

CSB 69 – Montecastro 15, David 13, Umlas 10, Manlapaz 8, Dalanon 7, Mañalac 6, Morial 5, Johnston 3, dela Paz 2, Sevilla 0, Abolucion 0, Santos 0.

PCU 65 – Navarro 15, Amparado 9, Busa 8, Vidal 7, Santos 6, McCoy 6, Gomez 6, Belga 4, Allen 2, Sumera 2, Siruma 0.

Quarter Scores: 20-17; 33-42; 50-58; 69-65

    because they dont have the school spirit! and one thing, they believe that they are from lasalle not CSB. lolz!

    ang nakaka-inis lang sa school(csb) hindi cla nag a-announce na may game or yung ibang prof sa PE hindi nila nirequired manuod yung ibang mga frosh. mga 3 blocks lang ata nanuod nung opening ksama yung ibang hindi frosh na student ng csb nung saturday. sana naman may CSB AUTHORITIES d2 na i-encourage naman manuod yung student sa game ng csb hindi LANG dapat sa DLSU game nanunuod
